We compare all of the car hire insurance options

Car hire insurance can be a minefield of jargon with terms like ‘CDW', ‘SLI', security deposit, excess amount etc. At Stress Free Car Rental we work hard to translate the jargon every step of the way – so that you don't have to.

Of course, you're always free to source your own car rental insurance product. However, if you'd like to bundle your insurance with your car hire, all of the rentals we compare in the USA includes zero excess and a full to full fuel policy. It's worth keeping this in mind when you compare our prices to those on some other websites.

For rentals in the USA, we also offer a top up policy that covers you for unexpected mishaps like lost keys and misfuelling. This is entirely optional and you will be offered alternatives at the car rental collection desk (which are also optional).

If you're hiring a car in outside of the USA, it's best to either select a rental with zero excess or purchase a car rental insurance excess policy. These are easy to find on our website using the filters on our search results page. In many countries, large security deposits are taken to cover the insurance excess on the hire car. It's worth taking some time to understand how this works.

Confused already? Don't be – just get in touch with one of our car hire advisors and everything will be crystal clear.

Frequently Asked Questions

We compare car rental prices with zero excess or reduced excess at 1000s of locations all over the world. To find these use the ‘no excess’ filters on our website once you’ve hit the search button.

All of the prices on our website include all of the additional fees, including a clear breakdown of what you’ll need to pay when you pick up the car. This includes things like local taxes which aren’t always clearly displayed on some other websites.

A security deposit is usually held on a credit card until you return the car. The amount held is often a deposit for a full tank of fuel and an amount to cover the insurance excess (where applicable). The security deposit is refunded when you return the car without damage and a full tank of fuel. You can find options with reduced security deposits on our search results page.

Payment on our website can be made using any valid debit or credit card. However, many of the car rental companies we compare require that you produce a credit card when you pick up the car. If you have no credit card, you can filter the options that allow a debit card on collection once you’ve clicked the search button.

A fuel policy is the agreement for how your car hire fuel will be paid for. All of the rentals on our website include a full to full fuel policy. This is the best option as it means there are no extra fuel related fees so long as you return the car with a full tank.

To collect your car the lead driver should present a valid driver's license, passport or National Identity Card, Credit or debit card in the lead driver's name, Home and local (hotel, villa etc) address and a rental Booking confirmation email. Any other requirements at collection are clearly explained in your booking confirmation email.

You can find options including extra drivers on the search results page of our website. You can also choose to pay for an extra driver when you collect the car. The additional driver will need their drivers licence and passport so that the car rental company can add them to the insurance.

Yes, you can cancel your booking with a full refund anytime up until 48 hours before you collect the car.

Car Hire with No Cancellation Fee

How to Hire a Car with No Cancellation Fee

All the rentals we offer include a free cancellation policy. This means that you're able to cancel your car hire with a full refund at any point up until 48 hours before you collect the car.

When you purchase the Essential Cover product to insure your car hire excess, you can cancel this and receive a full refund anytime up until the booking start time.

All refunds are processed by us in less than 24 hours. If you have to cancel your rental, the refund will be in your account in 7 days.

Hiring a Car with Unlimited Mileage

We offer limited and unlimited mileage rentals.

Limited mileage rentals can often be less expensive than unlimited. When considering limited mileage rentals, the mileage allowance is always clearly displayed. If you decide to book a rental with limited mileage, you will be charged an additional fee if you go above the daily mileage allowance. The total mileage allowance for the whole rental is calculated as (the number of hire days multiplied by the daily allowance). You don't have to remain within the daily allowance on every day, provided that the total miles used during the rental doesn't go over the number of days X the daily limit.

When you choose a limited mileage car hire, we recommend checking the charges for excess mileage. These can be found in our term and conditions section. You can also use the search filters on our website to find car rental including unlimited mileage which will save money if you're planning a longer journey

Most of the vehicle hire providers we work with permit you to collect your vehicle in one location and drop off the vehicle at a different location. If you have chosen a different drop off location for your rental, the prices on our website will include any additional charges for this. You'll also find a breakdown of the additional fees on the payment page.

How to Hire a Car with a Reduced Security Deposit

At the collection desk, you will often be asked to leave a security deposit on your credit card or debit card. Security deposits can vary significantly dependent on the size of the car and the insurance excess . Car rental Security deposits can range between £50 and £2,100.

We compare all of the car hire options with a low security deposit and in some instances no deposit at all except for fuel. If you decide to book a rental with Premium Cover included, you can reduce the deposit to cover only fuel (often less than £100), this is refunded to your card when the vehicle is dropped off with a full tank.

Car Hire and Cross Border Fees

Hiring a Car and Cross Border Fees

If you want to collect your rental and take it across the border into a different country, be sure to check the terms and conditions. Almost all car hire brands require that you inform them when you collect the car; and will charge additional fees to top up the insurance. If you fail to do so, you might find that your rental will not be insured if you take the rental into a different country.

You can find the information relating to cross border charges and fees by clicking Rental terms and viewing the Cross Border Rules section.

If you're struggling to find the cross border information for your car hire please get in touch with our car rental advisors and they'll be happy to help.

Renting a Car with Child Seats

You're allowed to use your own child seats for your car rental, as long as they meet the legal safety requirements for use in your car hire location.

You'll also be offered the option to add them to your rental when you make a booking on our website. Child seats are paid for in the local currency when you collect the rental.

Car Hire with no Excess Held on Your Card

Hiring a Car without an Excess Held on Your Credit Card

The insurance excess is the total amount you would be required to pay if the vehicle is stolen, written off or severely damaged. However, the excess on hire cars can be very high. It's often between £900 to £2,100. If the car is returned damaged, or it's stolen or written off, you'll have to pay up to the total amount of the excess.

When you pick up the hire car, the excess is held on your credit card as something called a 'pre authorised' transaction. Pre Auth means that the money is not charged to your card as a regular transaction, it's held as a pending transaction until you return the vehicle. You won't normally have to pay currency charges on credit cards for pre authorised transactions. As long as the rental car is returned in the same condition as when you collected it, the amount is fully refunded to your card with nothing additional to pay.

If you plan to pay by debit card, the insurance excess amount is taken from your bank account and fully refunded when the car is dropped off. If you intend to use debit card on collection, as the excess amount can be high, we recommend to either buy Premium Cover on our website or to pay for top up cover at the collection desk.

To view rental options with a £0 or reduced excess review our Premium Cover rental options.

Rental car terms explained

Collision damage waiver (CDW)

CDW (Collision damage waiver)
CDW insures the car for damage in the same way the insurance you have on your personal car does. CDW usually includes an excess amount which you can choose to insure separately (See Excess reimbursement insurance). Our website also include cars that include CDW with a zero excess

Extra driver costs

A car hire agreement is between the hire car company and the one person that signs the agreement and will be the named driver. This means you have to ask for other drivers to be added, and this usually comes with a cost ( can be up to £10a day or even more). However, there are occasional promotions where extra drivers are free. Always be cautious of being asked if you'd like to include a driver without being told the cost.
Extra driver charges

Theft liability cover (theft protection)

Theft liability cover (theft protection)
It insures the amount due if the rental car is stolen. It usually includes an excess amount, which means you would be required to pay the first part of an insurance claim (usually between £950 to £2,500, depending on the deal, the car rental company and the location.

If you choose to insure your excess with us, however, you will be reimbursed for any or all of of the excess you have to pay (See essential cover). With Premium Cover your excess is often reduced.

Excess reimbursement insurance

Purchasing this policy ensures you'll be reimbursed for the excess you have to pay to the rental car company .

Excess insurance also usually covers other possible costs, such as towing, cleaning or admin fees, or misfuelling fees.
Essential Cover

Fuel policy (full to full vs full to empty)

Fuel policy (full to full vs full to empty)
The rentals on our site come with a fair full to fuel fuel policy.

You'll be required to hold a deposit for fuel on a credit card when you collect the rental. Fill the rental up and return it full and there's no additional fees for fuel.

You will see full to empty policies on some other websites that seem to be better deals. Always check the small print for full to empty rentals as the admin and refuelling fees included with full to empty fuel policies make it more expensive than full to full .

Third party liability cover

Third party liability insurance provides protection in case you cause an incident. If you do, it might kill or injure others (for instance your passengers, pedestrians or people in other vehicles), or damage their property (their vehicle, house or possessions, for example). As legally they need to be protected, you'd be responsible any claim, or treating injuries or covering their loss of earnings, as well as any legal costs and any court fees.

Third party liability is usually subject to an excess, which means you would have to pay the first part of any claim (usually between £1,000 to £3,000, varying dependent on the car, the deal and the country). If you choose to insure the excess , you will be reimbursed for any or all of the excess you have to pay. If you decide to take out Premium Cover, your excess is often reduced .

Rental car excess

Car hire excess
For rentals outside of the US and Canada there is usually an insurance excess held on your card* - this is similar to the excess on your own car in the UK. The excess on hire cars can be high. It's usually in the region of £1,100 to £2,700. If you fail to insure the insurance excess amount you could be liable to pay for any damage up to the value of the excess amount. Take a look at the Premium Cover hire car options if you'd prefer not to have the excess amount blocked on your card when you collect the car.
