We compare all of the car hire insurance options

Car hire insurance can be a minefield of jargon with terms like ‘CDW', ‘SLI', security deposit, excess amount etc. At Stress Free Car Rental we work hard to translate the jargon every step of the way – so that you don't have to.

Of course, you're always free to source your own car rental insurance product. However, if you'd like to bundle your insurance with your car hire, all of the rentals we compare in the USA includes zero excess and a full to full fuel policy. It's worth keeping this in mind when you compare our prices to those on some other websites.

For rentals in the USA, we also offer a top up policy that covers you for unexpected mishaps like lost keys and misfuelling. This is entirely optional and you will be offered alternatives at the car rental collection desk (which are also optional).

If you're hiring a car in outside of the USA, it's best to either select a rental with zero excess or purchase a car rental insurance excess policy. These are easy to find on our website using the filters on our search results page. In many countries, large security deposits are taken to cover the insurance excess on the hire car. It's worth taking some time to understand how this works.

Confused already? Don't be – just get in touch with one of our car hire advisors and everything will be crystal clear.

Frequently Asked Questions

We compare car rental prices with zero excess or reduced excess at 1000s of locations all over the world. To find these use the ‘no excess’ filters on our website once you’ve hit the search button.

All of the prices on our website include all of the additional fees, including a clear breakdown of what you’ll need to pay when you pick up the car. This includes things like local taxes which aren’t always clearly displayed on some other websites.

A security deposit is usually held on a credit card until you return the car. The amount held is often a deposit for a full tank of fuel and an amount to cover the insurance excess (where applicable). The security deposit is refunded when you return the car without damage and a full tank of fuel. You can find options with reduced security deposits on our search results page.

Payment on our website can be made using any valid debit or credit card. However, many of the car rental companies we compare require that you produce a credit card when you pick up the car. If you have no credit card, you can filter the options that allow a debit card on collection once you’ve clicked the search button.

A fuel policy is the agreement for how your car hire fuel will be paid for. All of the rentals on our website include a full to full fuel policy. This is the best option as it means there are no extra fuel related fees so long as you return the car with a full tank.

To collect your car the lead driver should present a valid driver's license, passport or National Identity Card, Credit or debit card in the lead driver's name, Home and local (hotel, villa etc) address and a rental Booking confirmation email. Any other requirements at collection are clearly explained in your booking confirmation email.

You can find options including extra drivers on the search results page of our website. You can also choose to pay for an extra driver when you collect the car. The additional driver will need their drivers licence and passport so that the car rental company can add them to the insurance.

Yes, you can cancel your booking with a full refund anytime up until 48 hours before you collect the car.

Car Hire with No Cancellation Fee

All the hire cars we offer include free cancellation. This means that you're able to cancel your booking with a refund anytime until 48 hours before picking up the car.

If you've purchased the Essential Cover product to cover your car rental excess, you can cancel this with a refund up until the rental start time( as printed on your rental confirmation email).

All refunds are processed by us in less than 24 hours. If you have to cancel your booking, the refund will be in your bank account within 7 days.

Hiring a Car with Unlimited Mileage

We offer both unlimited and limited mileage rentals.

Limited mileage rentals can often be a cheaper option than unlimited. When considering limited mileage rentals, the daily mileage allowance will always be clearly visibile. If you choose a rental including limited mileage, you will be charged an additional fee if you exceed the daily mileage allowance. The mileage allowance for the whole rental duration is calculated as (the number of hire days multiplied by the daily mileage allowance). You do not have to stay within the daily allowance on every day, provided that the total miles used throughout the rental does not exceed the number of days X the daily allowance.

When you opt for a limited mileage rental, we recommend checking the costs for excess mileage. These can be found in our term and conditions section. It's also possible to use the search filters on our website to display car hire including unlimited mileage which can save money if you're planning a longer journey

How to hire a car without a credit card

You can pay for your car hire on our website using any credit or debit card, including Visa, Mastercard or American Express. We also compare car hire deals at 1000s of locations that accept a debit card on collection. You can quickly and easily find these by using the filters on the search results page or taking a look at our Premium Cover options on the extras page.

Car Hire including a Free Additional Driver

You can find offers on our website which include a free extra driver bundled into the price. Use the filters on the search results page to find bundled deals. It's also possible to add an additional driver on the extras page before you complete your booking.

Renting a Car with One Way Fees included

Many of the car rental brands we work with allow you to pick up the car in one location and return the car at a different location. If you've chosen a different drop off location for your rental, the prices displayed on our website include any additional charges for this. You can also see a breakdown of all additional charges on the payment page.

How to Rent a Car with a Low Security Deposit

When you pick up the car, you will be required to leave a security deposit on a credit card or debit card. Security deposits can vary significantly dependent on the size of the car and the excess amount. Car rental Security deposits can range between £0 and £2,500.

We compare all of the car hire options with a low security deposit and in some instances no deposit at all except for fuel. If you decide to book a rental with Premium Cover included, you can reduce your deposit to cover only the cost of a full tank of fuel (often less than £100), this is fully refunded when the car is dropped off with a full tank.

Car Hire and Cross Border Fees

If you want to collect your rental and take it across the border , be sure to check the terms and conditions. Most car rental brands insist that you let them know on collection; and will charge additional fees to top up your insurance. If you do not let them know, it's possible that your rental will not be insured if you take the rental into a different country.

You'll find the information relating to cross border charges and fees by checking the Rental terms and viewing the Cross Border Rules section.

If you cant find the cross border information for your car hire get in touch with one of our car rental advisors and they'll be happy to help.

Car Hire with Child Seats

You're allowed to take along your own child seats for your vehicle rental, as long as they meet all of the legal safety requirements for use in your car hire location.

You'll be offered the opportunity to include them with your rental when you make a booking on our website. Child seats and booster seats are paid for in local currency when collecting the car.

How to Rent a Car with no Excess Held on Your Credit Card

The excess is the total amount you would be liable to pay if the car is written off, severely damaged or stolen. The excess amount on rental cars can be very high. It's often between £800 to £3,000. If the car is returned damaged, or it's stolen or written off, you'll have to pay up to the total amount of the excess.

When you pick up the rental car, the excess is held on your card as a 'pre authorised' transaction. This means that the amount is not charged to your card as a regular payment, it's held as a pending transaction until you drop off the car. You won't usually have to pay foreign currency charges on credit cards for pre authorised payments, so provided the car is returned in the same condition as when you collected it, the excess amount will be fully refunded to your card with nothing further to pay.

If you plan to pay by debit card, the excess amount will be taken from your account and fully refunded when the vehicle is returned. If you plan to use debit card on collection, as the excess amount is often high, we recommend to either buy Premium Cover when you book or to pay for top up cover at the rental desk.

If you'd like to hire a car with a £0 or reduced insurance excess take a look at our Premium Cover rental options.

Rental car terms explained

Collision damage waiver (CDW)

It covers the car for accident damage in the same way the insurance cover you have on your own vehicle does. It usually includes an excess which you can choose to cover with an additional policy (See Excess reimbursement insurance). We also list cars on the site that include CDW with a zero excess

Additional driver charges

Car hire agreements is between the car hire company and the person that signs the agreement and will be the main driver. This requires that you will have to ask for other drivers to be added, and this usually means an additional cost (which can be up to £11a day ). However, there are occasional promotions where extra drivers are free. Always be cautious of being asked if you'd like to add a driver without being told the price.

Theft liability cover (theft protection)

It insures the amount due if the hire car is stolen. Theft liability is subject to an excess , which means you would have to pay the first part of an insurance claim (usually between £900 to £2,750, depending on the deal, the car rental company and the location.

When you insure your excess with us, however, you will be reimbursed for any or all of of the excess amount you have to pay (See our essential cover). Or with Premium Cover your excess amount can be reduced.

Essential Cover

Buying excess cover means you'll be reimbursed for any of the excess that's held on your credit card by the hire car company .

Excess insurance also usually covers other possible costs, such as towing, cleaning or admin fees, or misfuelling costs.

Fuel policy (full to full vs full to empty)

The rentals on the site include a full to fuel fuel policy.

When you collect you rental you'll be required to pay a small deposit for fuel on a credit card when you pick up the hire car. Fill the rental up and drop it off full and there will be nothing further to pay for fuel.

You might see full to empty policies on other websites that seem to be lower cost deals. Always check the small print for full to empty rentals as the refuelling and admin charges included with full to empty fuel policies make it more expensive than full to full fuel policies.

Third party liability insurance

Third party liability insurance provides protection in case you cause an accident. If you do, it could kill or injure others (for instance your passengers, people in other vehicles or pedestrians), or damage their property (their vehicle, house or possessions, for example). Since they need to be protected, you could be responsible the cost of any damage, or treating injuries or covering loss of earnings, as well as the third party's legal fees and any court costs.

Third party liability is subject to an excess, this means you would need to pay the first part of any claim (usually between £800 to £1,600, varying dependent on the value of the car, the country and the deal). If you choose to cover your excess , you'll be refunded for all of the excess you have to pay. If you decide to take out Premium Cover, your excess can be reduced .

Car hire excess

For rentals outside of the US and Canada there's usually an excess held on your card* - this is similar to the excess on domestic car insurance in the UK. However, the excess on rental cars is very high. It's normally in the region of £1,100 to £3,000. If you decide not to cover the excess amount you will be liable to pay for damage to the car up to the value of the excess . Take a look at the Premium Cover rental car options if you'd like to avoid having a large amount blocked on your card when you collect the car.
