We compare all of the car hire insurance options

Car hire insurance can be a minefield of jargon with terms like ‘CDW', ‘SLI', security deposit, excess amount etc. At Stress Free Car Rental we work hard to translate the jargon every step of the way – so that you don't have to.

Of course, you're always free to source your own car rental insurance product. However, if you'd like to bundle your insurance with your car hire, all of the rentals we compare in the USA includes zero excess and a full to full fuel policy. It's worth keeping this in mind when you compare our prices to those on some other websites.

For rentals in the USA, we also offer a top up policy that covers you for unexpected mishaps like lost keys and misfuelling. This is entirely optional and you will be offered alternatives at the car rental collection desk (which are also optional).

If you're hiring a car in outside of the USA, it's best to either select a rental with zero excess or purchase a car rental insurance excess policy. These are easy to find on our website using the filters on our search results page. In many countries, large security deposits are taken to cover the insurance excess on the hire car. It's worth taking some time to understand how this works.

Confused already? Don't be – just get in touch with one of our car hire advisors and everything will be crystal clear.

A security deposit is usually held on a credit card until you return the car. Payment on our website can be made using any valid debit or credit card. However, many of the car rental companies we compare require that you produce a credit card when you pick up the car. A fuel policy is the agreement for how your car hire fuel will be paid for. All of the rentals on our website include a full to full fuel policy. This is the best option as it means there are no extra fuel related fees so long as you return the car with a full tank.

To collect your car the lead driver should present a valid driver's license, passport or National Identity Card, Credit or debit card in the lead driver's name, Home and local (hotel, villa etc) address and a rental Booking confirmation email. Car Hire with One Way Fees included

Many of the car rental providers we work with permit you to collect your vehicle in one location and return the car at a different location. You will also find a full breakdown of all additional fees on the payment page.

At the collection desk, you will be required to leave a security deposit on your debit card or credit card. The security deposit vary significantly dependent on the size of the vehicle and the excess . Car hire Security deposits can be anywhere between £50 and £2,200.

We compare all of the car hire options with a low security deposit and in some instances no deposit at all except for fuel. When you book a rental with Premium Cover included, you're often able to reduce the deposit to cover only fuel (often less than £100), this is fully refunded to your card when the vehicle is dropped off with a full tank.

Renting a Car with Unlimited Mileage

Our website offers both unlimited and limited mileage rentals.

Limited mileage rentals are often a cheaper option than unlimited. When considering limited mileage rentals, the mileage allowance is always clearly displayed. If you decide to book a rental including limited mileage, you'll be charged an additional fee if you go above the daily allowance. The total mileage allowance for the whole rental is calculated as (the number of hire days X the daily mileage allowance). You don't have to stay within the daily limit on every day, provided that the total miles used during the rental doesn't go over the number of days multiplied by the daily allowance.

When you choose a limited mileage car hire, it's receommended to check the charges for excess mileage. These can be found in our T&Cs section.

How to Rent a Car and Cross Border Fees

If you plan to collect your car hire and take it across the border , you should always check the terms and conditions. Almost all car rental brands insist that you let them know on collection; and usually charge additional fees to top up the insurance. If you do not let them know, it's possible that the rental car will not be insured if you take the rental into a different country.

You can find the details of cross border policies by clicking Rental terms and checking the Cross Border Rules section.

If you cant find the cross border terms and conditions please get in touch with one of our car rental advisors and they'll be happy to help.

How to Rent a Car without an Insurance Excess Held on Your Credit Card

The insurance excess is the amount you'd be required to pay if the car is severely damaged, written off or stolen. The excess on hire cars can be expensive. It's normally between £850 to £2,000, depending on the car, the country and the deal. If the car is returned damaged, or it's stolen or written off, you will be required to pay some or all of the excess.

On collection of the vehicle, the excess is held on your credit card as a 'pre-auth' transaction. This means that the amount is not charged to your card as a regular transaction, it's held as a pending payment until you drop off the car. You don't normally have to pay foreign currency charges on credit cards for pre authorised payments. As long as the car is dropped off in the same condition as when you collected it, the amount is fully refunded to your credit card with nothing further to pay.

If you're paying by debit card, the excess amount is taken from your bank account and fully refunded when the car is dropped off. If you plan to use a debit card on collection, as the excess can be high, it's recommended to buy Premium Cover when you book or to pay for top up insurance at the rental desk.

To view rental options with a £0 or reduced excess take a look at our Premium Cover options.

Rental car terms explained

Collision damage waiver (CDW)

It covers the car for accident damage in the same way the insurance cover you have on your own vehicle does. It usually includes an excess which you can choose to cover with an additional policy (See Excess reimbursement insurance). We also list cars on the site that include CDW with a zero excess

Additional driver charges

Car hire agreements is between the car hire company and the person that signs the agreement and will be the main driver. This requires that you will have to ask for other drivers to be added, and this usually means an additional cost (which can be up to £11a day ). However, there are occasional promotions where extra drivers are free. Always be cautious of being asked if you'd like to add a driver without being told the price.

Theft liability cover (theft protection)

It insures the amount due if the hire car is stolen. Theft liability is subject to an excess , which means you would have to pay the first part of an insurance claim (usually between £900 to £2,750, depending on the deal, the car rental company and the location.

When you insure your excess with us, however, you will be reimbursed for any or all of of the excess amount you have to pay (See our essential cover). Or with Premium Cover your excess amount can be reduced.

Essential Cover

Buying excess cover means you'll be reimbursed for any of the excess that's held on your credit card by the hire car company .

Excess insurance also usually covers other possible costs, such as towing, cleaning or admin fees, or misfuelling costs.

Fuel policy (full to full vs full to empty)

The rentals on the site include a full to fuel fuel policy.

When you collect you rental you'll be required to pay a small deposit for fuel on a credit card when you pick up the hire car. Fill the rental up and drop it off full and there will be nothing further to pay for fuel.

You might see full to empty policies on other websites that seem to be lower cost deals. Always check the small print for full to empty rentals as the refuelling and admin charges included with full to empty fuel policies make it more expensive than full to full fuel policies.

Third party liability insurance

Third party liability insurance provides protection in case you cause an accident. If you do, it could kill or injure others (for instance your passengers, people in other vehicles or pedestrians), or damage their property (their vehicle, house or possessions, for example). Since they need to be protected, you could be responsible the cost of any damage, or treating injuries or covering loss of earnings, as well as the third party's legal fees and any court costs.

Third party liability is subject to an excess, this means you would need to pay the first part of any claim (usually between £800 to £1,600, varying dependent on the value of the car, the country and the deal). If you choose to cover your excess , you'll be refunded for all of the excess you have to pay. If you decide to take out Premium Cover, your excess can be reduced .

Car hire excess

For rentals outside of the US and Canada there's usually an excess held on your card* - this is similar to the excess on domestic car insurance in the UK. However, the excess on rental cars is very high. It's normally in the region of £1,100 to £3,000. If you decide not to cover the excess amount you will be liable to pay for damage to the car up to the value of the excess . Take a look at the Premium Cover rental car options if you'd like to avoid having a large amount blocked on your card when you collect the car.
