Hiring a car with Ace Rent A Car without an Excess Held on Your Credit Card;

The excess is the amount you'd be liable to pay if the car is severely damaged, written off or stolen. The excess on hire cars can be high. It's often between £1,000 to £2,000. If the car is returned damaged, or it's stolen or written off, you'll have to pay up to the total amount of the excess.

On collection of the car, the insurance excess is held on your credit card as a 'pre authorised' transaction. This means that the money is not taken from your credit card as a normal payment, it's held as a pending transaction until you drop off the car. You don't usually pay currency charges on credit cards for pre authorised transactions. As long as the vehicle is dropped off in the same condition as when you collected it, this excess amount is fully refunded to your card without anything additional to pay.

If you plan to pay by debit card, the insurance excess amount is taken from your account and fully refunded when the vehicle is returned. If you intend to use debit card on collection, as the excess amount is often high, we recommend to either buy Premium Cover when you book or to buy top up insurance at the rental desk.

To view car hire options with a £0 or reduced insurance excess check out our Premium Cover options.

Ace Rent A Car Car Hire with Cross Border Fees Included

If you plan to collect your vehicle and take it over the border , you should always review the terms and conditions. Most car hire providers insist that you let them know when you collect the car; and will charge additional fees to top up your insurance. If you fail to do so, you might find that the rental car will not be insured if you take the rental into a different country.

You'll find the details of cross border charges and fees by checking the Rental terms and checking the Cross Border Rules section.

If you're struggling to find the cross border terms and conditions get in touch with our car rental advisors and they'll be happy to help.

Rental car jargon explained

Additional driver costs

Car rental contracts is between the hire car company and the person that signs the contract and will be the named driver. This means you have to ask for any other drivers to be added, this usually means an additional cost ( can be up to £10a day ). We often list promotions where extra drivers are free. Beware of being asked if you'd like to add a driver without being informed of the cost.

Car hire excess

For rentals outside of the US and Canada there's usually an insurance excess held on your card* - this is similar to the excess on your own car in the UK. However, the excess on rental cars is very high. It's usually in the region of £1,100 to £2,500. If you decide not to cover the insurance excess amount you could be liable to pay for any damage up to the excess amount. Take a look at our Premium Cover car rental options if you'd prefer not to have a large amount held on your card .

Theft liability insurance (theft protection)

It insures the amount due if the hire car is stolen. Theft liability usually includes an excess , this means you would have to pay the first part of an insurance claim (usually between £700 to £2,000, depending on the deal, the car rental company and the location.

When you insure your excess with us, however, you'll be refunded for any of of the excess amount you pay (See essential cover). Or with Premium Cover the excess is often reduced.

Fuel policy (full to full vs full to empty)

The rentals on our site always include a fair full to fuel fuel policy.

When you collect you rental you'll be asked to pay a deposit for fuel on a credit card when you pick up the hire car. Ensure that you fill the car up and drop it off full and there's no additional fees for fuel.

You might find full to empty fuel policies on other websites that seem to be offering lower cost deals. Always check the terms and conditions for full to empty rentals as the admin and refuelling costs associated with full to empty fuel policies make it much more expensive than full to full fuel policies.

CDW (Collision damage waiver)

It provides insurance protection for damage in the same way the insurance cover you have on your own car does. CDW usually includes an excess which you can insure separately (See Excess reimbursement insurance). Our website also list car hire on the site that include CDW with no excess amount

Essential Cover

Buying essential cover ensures you'll be reimbursed for any of the excess you have to pay to the car hire company when you drop off the car.

Excess insurance also usually covers other potential costs, like cleaning, towing, admin fees and misfuelling costs.

Third party liability cover

Third party liability insurance insures in case you cause an accident. If you do, it might injure or kill other people (such as your passengers, pedestrians or people in other vehicles), or damage their property (their vehicle, house or possessions, for example). As legally they need to be covered, you could be responsible any claim, or treating injuries or financially covering loss of earnings, as well as any legal costs and court fees.

Third party liability is usually subject to an excess, which means you would need to pay the first part of any claim (usually between £750 to £1,500, varying dependent on the car, the country and the deal). If you choose to cover the excess amount, you'll be reimbursed for all of the excess amount you have to pay. Or if you take out Premium Cover, your excess amount can be reduced .
