Discover Affordable Car Hire with Cross Border Fees Included

If you want to pick up your rental and take it across the border into a different country, be sure to check the terms and conditions. Many car rental brands insist that you let them know when you collect the car; and usually charge additional fees to top up the insurance. If you fail to do so, it's possible that the rental car will not be insured when you cross over into a different country.

You can find the details of cross border charges and fees by checking the Rental terms and checking the Cross Border Rules section.

If you cant find the cross border terms and conditions for your car hire please get in touch with our car rental advisors and they'll be happy to help.

How to find Affordable Car Hire with Child Seats or booster seats

You can use your own child seats and booster seats for your car rental, so long as they meet all of the legal safety requirements for use in your car hire location.

You will also be offered the opportunity to add them to your rental when making a booking on our website. Child seats and booster seats are paid in local currency when collecting the rental. Affordable Car Hire with a Low Security Deposit

When you collect the car, you'll usually be required to leave a security deposit on a debit card or credit card. The security deposit can vary significantly subject to the size of the car and the insurance excess . Car rental Security deposits can be anywhere between £50 and £2,100.

We compare all of the car hire options with a low security deposit and in some instances no deposit at all except for fuel. Affordable Car Hire with One Way Fees included

Many of the car rental providers we work with allow you to pick up your car in one location and return the car at a different location. How to find Affordable Car Hire with Unlimited Mileage

We offer limited and unlimited mileage rentals.

Limited mileage rentals can often be a cheaper option than unlimited. For limited mileage rentals, the daily mileage limit will always be clearly visibile. If you choose a rental including limited mileage, you'll be charged a per mile additional fee if you exceed the daily allowance. The mileage allowance for the whole rental duration is calculated as (the number of hire days multiplied by the daily mileage allowance). You don't have to stay within the daily allowance on every day, provided that the total miles used throughout the rental does not go over the number of days X the daily allowance.

If you decide to book a limited mileage car hire, it's receommended to check the charges for excess mileage. You can find these in our term and conditions. It's also possible to use the search filters on our website to display rental cars including unlimited mileage which will save you money if you're planning a longer journey

Affordable Car Hire with no Excess Held on Your Card

Affordable Car Hire without an Insurance Excess Held on Your Card

The insurance excess is the amount you'd be liable to pay if the vehicle is stolen, written off or severely damaged. However, the excess amount on rental cars can be very high. It's normally between £950 to £3,000. If you return the car damaged, or it's stolen or written off, you will have to pay some or all of the excess.

On collection of the rental car, the insurance excess is held on your credit card as something called a 'pre-auth' transaction. This means that the money is not charged to your credit card as a regular transaction, it's held as a pending payment until you drop off the vehicle. You don't usually pay currency fees on credit cards for pre authorised payments. As long as the vehicle is dropped off in the same condition as when you collected it, this excess amount will be fully refunded to your card without anything additional to pay.

If you intend to pay for your rental by debit card, the excess is taken from your account and fully refunded when the car is returned. If you plan to use debit card on collection, as the excess is often high, we recommend to either buy Premium Cover when you book or to pay for top up insurance at the rental desk.

To view car hire options with a £0 or reduced excess review our Premium Cover options.

Insurance excess and security deposits

Car hire insurance, excess and security deposits

We understand how frightening picking a hire car excess cover product can be. The charges that make up the price of hiring a car can be very confusing, these can include:

  • The cost of hiring the vehicle
  • Any extras (e.g. child car seats & sat nav)
  • Insurance costs

Top tips when collecting your vehicle hire

You will have been provided with car rental pick up location details with your booking confirmation email. Take time to understand how to find the car rental pick up location before you set off

Taking a little time to take photos and report any damage, whether internal or external, will help to prevent any issues with the car rental company when you return the vehicle

Beside the exterior, we also recommend documenting all damage to the inside of the car and informing the car hire company before driving away

Whether you've bought Essential excess cover on the website or have your own policy, you should still make some time to inspect the car for pre existing damage. We also recommend taking photos on your phone of each panel of the car. If there is damage on the vehicle that isn't highlighted in your rental agreement you must report this to the vehicle rental provider

Remember to inspect the wheels and locks for damage as well. Locks and wheels are easy to miss when you're in a hurry to start your journey

All of the vehicles listed on the website include a full to full fuel policy. You should double check that the fuel tank is full prior to setting off. if you find that it isn't you must report this to the car hire company immediately

Car hire terminology

Third party liability insurance

Third party liability cover
Third party liability insurance provides protection in case you cause an accident. If you do, it could kill or injure others (such as your passengers, people in other vehicles or pedestrians), or damage their property (their vehicle, house or possessions, for example). As legally they need to be covered, you'd be responsible the cost of any damage, or treating any injuries or covering loss of earnings, as well as the third party's legal costs and any court fees.

Third party liability is usually subject to an excess, which means you'll need to pay the first part of any claim (normally between £750 to £1,500, varying dependent on the car, the country and the deal). If you choose to insure the excess amount, you will be reimbursed for any or all of the excess you have to pay. Or if you take out Premium Cover, your excess can be reduced to zero.

Collision damage waiver (CDW)

CDW insures the car for damage in the same way the insurance cover you usually have on your own car does. CDW includes an excess amount which you can choose to insure with an additional policy (See Excess reimbursement insurance). Stress Free Car Rental also include car hire on the site that include CDW with a zero excess
CDW (Collision damage waiver)

Essential Cover

Excess reimbursement insurance
Choosing excess cover means you'll be reimbursed for any of the excess you have to pay to the hire car company when you drop off the car.

Excess reimbursement insurance also usually covers other possible costs, like cleaning, towing, admin fees and misfuelling fees.

Theft liability insurance (theft protection)

Theft liability insures the amount due if the rental car is stolen. It is subject to an excess , which means you'll need to pay the first part of any claim (usually between £950 to £2,500, depending on the car, the country and the deal.

When you insure your excess with an excess reimbursement policy, however, you'll be refunded for any of of the excess you pay (See our essential cover). Or with Premium Cover your excess amount can be reduced to zero.
Theft liability insurance (theft protection)

Car hire excess

Car Rental excess
For rentals outside of the US and Canada there's almost always an excess held on your card* - just like on your own car in the UK. The excess on hire cars is high. It's normally in the region of £1,200 to £2,500. If you fail to insure the excess amount you could be liable to pay for any damage up to the excess amount. Check out our Premium Cover rental car options if you'd prefer not to have the excess amount held on your card when you pick up the car.

Fuel policy (full to full vs full to empty)

The rentals on the site come with a full to fuel fuel policy.

When you collect you rental you'll be asked to pay a deposit for fuel on a credit card when you collect the car. Ensure that you fill the rental up and drop it off full and there will be no additional fees for fuel.

You will see full to empty fuel policies on some other websites that seem to be offering cheaper deals. Always check the terms and conditions for full to empty rentals as usually the refuelling and admin costs included with full to empty fuel policies make it more expensive than full to full fuel policies.
Fuel policy (full to full vs full to empty)

Extra driver fees

Extra driver fees
Car hire agreements is between the hire car company and the individual who signs the contract and will be the named driver. This requires that you need to ask for any other drivers to be added, this usually comes with a cost (which can be up to £13a day ). We often list promotions where extra drivers are free. Beware of being asked if you'd like to add a driver without being told the cost.
