Fuel policy (full to full vs full to empty)

The hire cars on our site always come with a fair full to fuel fuel policy.

You'll be required to hold a deposit for fuel on a credit card when you collect the hire car. Fill the car up and return it full and there will be no additional fees for fuel.

You might find full to empty policies on some other sites that seem to be better deals. Always check the small print for full to empty rentals as the refuelling and admin fees associated with full to empty fuel policies always make it more expensive than full to full .

Insurance excess

For rentals outside of the US and Canada there's almost always an insurance excess held on your card* - this is similar to the excess on domestic car insurance in the UK. However, the excess on rental cars can be very high. It's usually between £1,100 to £2,700. If you fail to cover the insurance excess you could be liable to pay for any damage up to the excess . Additional driver charges

Car hire agreements is between the hire car company and the individual who signs the agreement and will be the named driver. This requires that you have to ask for any other drivers to be added, this usually comes with a cost ( can be up to £11a day or even more). We often list special offers where extra drivers are free. Beware of being asked if you'd like to include a driver without being told the cost.

Collision damage waiver (CDW)

CDW covers the car for accident damage in a similar way the insurance you usually have on your own vehicle does. It usually includes an excess amount which you can cover separately (See Excess reimbursement insurance). Our website also include cars that include CDW with no excess amount

Excess reimbursement insurance

Choosing this policy ensures you'll be refunded for the excess that's held on your credit card by the hire car company when you drop off the car.

Excess reimbursement insurance also tends to cover other potential costs, such as towing, cleaning or admin fees, or misfuelling costs.

Theft liability insurance (theft protection)

It covers the amount due if the hire car is stolen. Theft liability is subject to an excess , this means you'll have to pay the first part of any claim (normally between £800 to £3,000, depending on the car, the country and the deal.

When you insure your excess with us, however, you'll be reimbursed for the of the excess amount you have to pay (See essential cover). With Premium Cover the excess amount can be reduced to zero.

Third party liability cover

Third party liability insurance provides protection in case you cause an accident. If you do, it could kill or injure others (such as your passengers, people in other vehicles or pedestrians), or damage property (their vehicle, house or possessions, for example). As legally they need to be covered, you could be responsible the cost of any damage, or treating injuries or covering their loss of earnings, as well as the third party's legal fees and court costs.

Third party liability is subject to an excess, this means you'll have to pay the first part of any claim (usually between £1,000 to £1,700, varying dependent on the value of the car, the deal and the country). When you insure the excess , you will be refunded for all of the excess amount you have to pay. If you decide to take out Premium Cover, your excess amount can be reduced to zero.

Hiring a Car with Autounion including Child Seats;

You can use your own child seats for your rental, so long as they meet the legal safety requirements for use in your car hire location.

You'll be offered the opportunity to add them to your car rental when making a booking on our website. Child seats and booster seats are paid for in local currency when you collect the rental.

Hiring a car with Autounion without an Excess Held on Your Credit Card

The excess is the amount you'd be required to pay if the car is written off, severely damaged or stolen. However, the excess amount on hire cars can be very high. It's often between £800 to £2,100, depending on the car, the country and the deal. If you return the car damaged, or it's stolen or written off, you will be required to pay some or all of the excess.

On collection of the rental car, the insurance excess is held on your credit card as a 'pre authorised' transaction. This means that the money isn't charged to your card as a regular transaction, it's held as a pending transaction until you drop off the car. You don't usually have to pay foreign currency fees on credit cards for pre authorised transactions, so provided the rental car is dropped off in the same condition as when it was collected, this amount will be fully refunded to your card without anything further to pay.

If you plan to pay by debit card, the excess is taken from your account and fully refunded when the car is dropped off. If you plan to use debit card on collection, as the excess is often very high, it's recommended to buy Premium Cover when you book or to pay for top up cover at the collection desk.

How to Hire with Autounion with a Low Security Deposit

At the collection desk, you'll usually be asked to leave a security deposit on your debit card or credit card. Deposits vary significantly dependent on the make and model of the car and the insurance excess . Car rental Security deposits can vary between £0 and £2,500.

We compare all of the car hire options with a low security deposit and in some instances no deposit at all except for fuel. When you decide to book a rental with Premium Cover included, you can reduce the deposit to cover only fuel (often less than £100), which is refunded to your card when the rental is dropped off with a full tank.

All of the hire cars we offer include free cancellation. This means that you can cancel your booking with a full refund at any point up until 48 hours before picking up the car.

How to rent a car with Autounion including Unlimited Mileage;

We offer both limited and unlimited mileage rentals.

Limited mileage rentals can often be less expensive than unlimited. For limited mileage rentals, the daily mileage allowance is always clearly displayed. If you choose a rental including limited mileage, you'll be liable to pay a per mile additional fee if you exceed the daily allowance. The total mileage allowance for the whole rental period is calculated as (the number of rental days multiplied by the daily mileage allowance). You don't have to stay within the daily limit on every day, provided that the total miles used during the rental does not go over the number of days X the daily allowance.

If you'd like to pick up your vehicle and take it across the border , we strongly recommend to review the terms and conditions. Europcar have implemented extra vehicle deep disinfecting measures. Vehicle keys are also disinfected between each rental and then kept in a sealed envelope once disinfected. Infection risk has been further reduced by ensuring that a zero contact policy is in place at the pick up and drop off areas, with all work areas cleaned thoroughly between each customer interaction.

Between each rental, Hertz and Thrifty are carrying out a multi stage cleaning procedure, involving rigorous cleaning of the steering wheel, door handles, seats etc.
