Autovia Car Hire

From humble beginnings consisting of 100 vehicles at 2 locations back in 2005, Autovia has grown to become one of the largest car rental companies in Italy. With the addition of their Ecovia and Furgovia brands (for low-carbon and commercial vehicles), Autovia now has a fleet of over 8,000 vehicles and more than 80 offices across Italy. In fact, their growth has been so notable that Autovia has ranked in the Financial Times top 1000 fastest growing companies in both 2019 and 2020.

Autovia refresh their fleet on a regular basis with no vehicles being more than 2 years old. If it’s a low carbon vehicle you want, keep an eye out for their Ecovia brand.

Finally, if you’re an international customer, you can rest assured that Autovia will be ready for you. Almost 30 percent of their sales revenue comes from outside Europe with the brand being especially popular with customers living in the USA and Canada.

Car hire jargon

Third party liability cover

Third party liability insurance
Third party liability insurance provides protection in case you cause an accident. If you do, it could injure or kill other people (for instance your passengers, people in other vehicles or pedestrians), or damage their property (their vehicle, house or possessions, for example). Since they need to be covered, you could be responsible the cost of any damage, or treating any injuries or financially covering loss of earnings, as well as the third party's legal fees and court costs.

Third party liability is subject to an excess, which means you would have to pay the first part of any claim (normally between £800 to £1,700, depending on the car, the deal and the country). When you insure your excess , you'll be refunded for all of the excess amount you have to pay. Or if you take out Premium Cover, your excess amount is often reduced .

Damage Liability

CDW provides insurance protection for damage in a similar way the insurance you usually have on your personal vehicle does. CDW usually includes an excess amount which you can cover with an additional policy (See Excess reimbursement insurance). Our website also list rental cars that include CDW with a zero excess
CDW (Collision damage waiver)

Essential Cover

Excess reimbursement insurance
Purchasing essential cover means you'll be refunded for any of the excess that's held on your credit card by the hire car company .

Excess insurance also usually covers other potential costs, such as towing, cleaning or admin fees, or misfuelling fees.

Theft liability cover (theft protection)

Theft liability covers the amount due if the rental car is stolen. Theft liability usually includes an excess amount, which means you would be required to pay the first part of an insurance claim (usually between £900 to £2,750, depending on the car, the country and the deal.

If you choose to insure your excess with us, however, you will be reimbursed for the of the excess amount you pay (See essential cover). Or with Premium Cover your excess can be reduced.

Fuel policy (full to full vs full to empty)

Fuel policy (full to full vs full to empty)
The rentals on our site always include a fair full to fuel fuel policy.

When you collect you rental you'll be required to hold a small deposit for fuel on a credit card when you collect the hire car. Ensure that you fill the rental up and return it full and there's no additional fees for fuel.

You might see full to empty policies on some other websites that seem to be offering better deals. Always check the small print for full to empty rentals as usually the admin and refuelling charges included with full to empty fuel policies always make it much more expensive than full to full fuel policies.

Car Rental excess

For rentals outside of the US and Canada there's almost always an excess held on your card* - just like on your own car in the UK. The excess on rental cars can be high. It's normally in the region of £1,200 to £2,500. If you fail to cover the excess amount you could be liable to pay for any damage up to the value of the excess . Check out the Premium Cover car hire options if you'd prefer not to have a large amount blocked on your credit card .

Extra driver charges

Additional driver charges
Car hire agreements is between the hire car company and the person that signs the agreement and will be the main driver. This means you have to ask for other drivers to be added, this usually comes with a cost ( can be up to £11a day ). We often list special offers that include extra drivers are free. Always be cautious of being asked if you'd like to add a driver without being told the price.

Hiring a car with Autovia without an Excess Held on Your Credit Card

The excess is the total amount you'd be required to pay if the car is written off, severely damaged or stolen. The excess on rental cars can be high. It's often between £1,000 to £2,100. If the car is returned damaged, or it's stolen or written off, you will be required to pay some or all of the excess.

When you pick up the car, the insurance excess is held on your credit card as something called a 'pre authorised' transaction. This means that the amount isn't taken from your card as a regular payment, it's held as a pending payment until you drop off the vehicle. You won't normally pay currency charges on credit cards for pre authorised payments, so provided the vehicle is returned in the same condition as when it was collected, the excess amount is fully refunded to your card without anything further to pay.

If you plan to pay by debit card, the insurance excess amount will be taken from your account and fully refunded when the car is returned. If you plan to use a debit card on collection, as the excess amount can be high, we recommend to either buy Premium Cover when you book or to buy top up cover at the collection desk.

If you'd like to hire a car with a £0 or reduced excess review our Premium Cover options.
