Avis Car Hire

Avis is one of the world's best known car rental brands. Since being formed in the USA in 1956, Avis (and its equally well known sister brand - "Budget") has grown to cover more than 5,500 locations spread across 165 countries.

Where some global brands will license their name to other operators, Avis prefer to operate their own locations especially throughout North America, Europe and Australasia. By operating the locations in this way, they are much better placed to manage the customer experience which, like all the major brands, is seen as the all-important measure.

Avis is most popular with frequent travellers who prefer to pay a little more for efficient service and convenient locations.

How to rent a car with Avis including Unlimited Mileage

How to rent a car with Avis including Unlimited Mileage

Our website offers both limited and unlimited mileage rental.

Limited mileage rentals can often be cheaper than unlimited. For limited mileage rentals, the mileage allowance is always clearly displayed. If you decide to book a rental with limited mileage, you will be liable to pay an additional fee if you exceed the daily allowance. The total mileage allowance for the rental duration is calculated as (the number of rental days multiplied by the daily mileage allowance). You don't have to stay within the daily limit on every day, provided that the total miles used throughout the rental does not go over the number of days X the daily limit.

If you choose a limited mileage car hire, it's receommended to check the costs for excess mileage. You'll find these in our term and conditions section. You can also use the search filters on our website to find rental cars including unlimited mileage which will save you money if you're planning a longer trip

Hiring a car with Avis without an Excess Held on Your Credit Card

The insurance excess is the amount you'd be liable to pay if the vehicle is severely damaged, written off or stolen. However, the excess on hire cars can be high. It's often between £1,000 to £2,200, depending on the car, the country and the deal. If the car is returned damaged, or it's stolen or written off, you will be required to pay up to the total amount of the excess.

When you arrive to collect the car, the excess is held on your card as something called a 'pre authorised' transaction. Pre Auth means that the money is not taken from your credit card as a regular transaction, it's held as a pending transaction until you drop off the car. You don't normally have to pay currency fees on credit cards for pre authorised payments. As long as the vehicle is returned in the same condition as when it was collected, the amount will be fully refunded to your credit card with nothing additional to pay.

If you're paying by debit card, the excess is taken from your account and refunded when the car is returned. If you intend to use debit card on collection, as the excess amount can be very high, we recommend to either buy Premium Cover when you book or to pay for top up cover at the collection desk.

Rental car terms explained

Third party liability cover

Third party liability cover
Third party liability insurance insures in case you cause an accident. If you do, it might injure or kill other people (for instance your passengers, people in other vehicles or pedestrians), or damage their property (their vehicle, house or possessions, for example). Since they need to be covered, you could be responsible the cost of any damage, or treating any injuries or covering loss of earnings, as well as the third party's legal fees and court costs.

Third party liability is usually subject to an excess, which means you'll need to pay the first part of any claim (normally between £750 to £1,700, depending on the car, the country and the deal). When you cover the excess , you will be refunded for any or all of the excess you have to pay. Or if you take out Premium Cover, your excess can be reduced to zero.

Theft liability insurance (theft protection)

It covers the amount due if the hire car is stolen. Theft liability is subject to an excess amount, which means you'll need to pay the first part of an insurance claim (normally between £900 to £2,750, depending on the deal, the car rental company and the location.

When you insure your excess with an excess reimbursement policy, however, you will be refunded for any of of the excess amount you pay (See our essential cover). Or with Premium Cover the excess is often reduced.

Extra driver charges

Extra driver costs
A rental contract is between the car hire company and the one person that signs the agreement and will be the main driver. This requires that you will have to ask for other drivers to be added, and this usually means an additional cost (which can be up to £11a day ). We often list promotions that include extra drivers are free. Beware of being asked if you'd like to include a driver without being informed of the price.

Car hire excess

For rentals outside of the US and Canada there is usually an insurance excess to pay* - this is similar to the excess on domestic car insurance in the UK. The excess on hire cars can be high. It's usually between £1,100 to £3,000. If you decide not to cover the insurance excess amount you will be liable to pay for any damage to the car up to the value of the excess . Take a look at the Premium Cover rental car options if you'd like to avoid having a large amount held on your credit card when you collect the car.

Essential Cover

Excess Insurance
Buying essential cover means you'll be reimbursed for the excess you have to pay to the hire car company when you drop off the car.

Excess insurance also usually covers other potential costs, such as towing, cleaning or admin fees, or misfuelling costs.

Fuel policy (full to full vs full to empty)

The rentals on the site include a fair full to fuel fuel policy.

When you collect you rental you'll be required to hold a small deposit for fuel on your credit card when you collect the rental. Ensure that you fill the car up and drop it off full and there's no additional fees for fuel.

You might find full to empty fuel policies on other websites that seem to be better deals. Always check the small print for full to empty rentals as the refuelling and admin fees associated with full to empty fuel policies make it more expensive than full to full fuel policies.

CDW (Collision damage waiver)

CDW (Collision damage waiver)
It provides insurance protection for damage in the same way the insurance you usually have on your own car does. It usually includes an excess which you can insure separately (See Excess reimbursement insurance). Stress Free Car Rental also include rental cars on the site that include CDW with no excess amount
