Fuel policy (full to full vs full to empty)

The rentals on our site always include a fair full to fuel fuel policy.

You'll be asked to pay a small deposit for fuel on your credit card when you pick up the hire car. Ensure that you fill the car up and return it full and there's nothing further to pay for fuel.

You might see full to empty fuel policies on other websites that seem to be offering lower cost deals. Be sure to check the terms and conditions for full to empty rentals as usually the refuelling and admin fees included with full to empty fuel policies make it much more expensive than full to full .

Damage Liability

CDW provides insurance protection for damage in the same way the insurance you have on your own car does. It includes an excess which you can choose to insure with an additional policy (See Excess reimbursement insurance). We also include rental cars on the site that include CDW with no excess amount

Essential Cover

Buying this policy ensures you'll be refunded for the excess that's held on your credit card by the car rental company .

This insurance also usually covers other possible costs, such as towing, cleaning or admin fees, or misfuelling costs.

Additional driver fees

A car hire agreement is between the hire car company and the one person that signs the contract and will be the named driver. This means you will have to ask for any other drivers to be added, and this usually comes with a cost ( can be up to £13a day or even more). However, there are occasional promotions that include extra drivers are free. Beware of being asked if you'd like to add a driver without being informed of the price.

Car hire excess

For rentals outside of the US and Canada there's usually an excess held on your card* - just like on your own car in the UK. However, the excess on rental cars is high. It's normally in the region of £1,000 to £2,500. If you decide not to insure the insurance excess you could be liable to pay for damage up to the excess amount. Theft liability insurance (theft protection)

Theft liability covers the amount due if the rental car is stolen. It usually includes an excess , which means you'll be required to pay the first part of any claim (normally between £900 to £2,000, depending on the car, the country and the deal.

When you insure your excess with us, however, you will be reimbursed for any of of the excess amount you pay (See our essential cover). With Premium Cover the excess amount is often reduced.

Third party liability insurance

Third party liability insurance provides protection in case you cause an incident. If you do, it might kill or injure other people (such as your passengers, pedestrians or people in other vehicles), or damage their property (their vehicle, house or possessions, for example). As legally they need to be covered, you could be responsible any claim, or treating injuries or financially covering their loss of earnings, as well as any legal fees and court fees.

Improved hire car cleaning processes at London United Kingdom

Our car rental partners have implemented advanced cleaning precautions throughout the ongoing pandemic. Here's an outline of some of the extra steps carried out.

New protocols are now in place with Greenmotion, including the installation of safety protection screens and hand sanitiser units at collection locations. Employees are now wearing protective equipment such as gloves and masks. All vehicles are being fully sanitised between every rental.

Enterprise, Alamo and National locations in are providing a complete clean pledge. This involves the deep cleaning every car between each rental ,including disinfecting the car keys.

Europcar have implemented extra car deep cleaning and disinfecting measures. Keys are also disinfected between all rentals and then kept in a sealed envelope once disinfected. A zero contact policy is in place at the rental desks, with all work areas cleaned between each customer interaction.

Between each rental, Hertz and Thrifty are carrying out a multi stage cleaning and increased hygiene process, including rigorous cleaning of the seats, door handles, steering wheel and keys.

What's the cheapest fuel policy for car rental with Avis?

All of our rentals with SUPPLIER include a full to full fuel policy. You'll collect the car with a full tank and be asked to leave a small deposit for fuel when you collect the car. The deposit is refunded when you return the car with a full tank.

How to Hire with Avis with a Low Security Deposit

When you collect the car, you'll usually be asked to leave a security deposit on your credit card or debit card. Deposits can vary significantly dependent on the make and model of the car and the excess . Car hire Security deposits can vary between £50 and £2,100.

We compare all of the car hire options with a low security deposit and in some instances no deposit at all except for fuel. When you decide to reserve a rental with Premium Cover included, you're often able to reduce your deposit to cover only fuel (usually less than £100), which is fully refunded to your card when the rental is dropped off with a full tank.

Hiring a car with Avis without an Excess Held on Your Credit Card

The excess is the amount you would be liable to pay if the vehicle is stolen, written off or severely damaged. However, the excess amount on rental cars can be very expensive. It's often between £1,000 to £3,000. If you return the car damaged, or it's stolen or written off, you'll have to pay up to the total amount of the excess.

When you pick up the rental car, the excess is held on your card as a 'pre authorised' transaction. Pre Auth means that the money isn't taken from your card as a normal payment, it's held as a pending transaction until you drop off the car. You don't normally have to pay currency fees on credit cards for pre authorised payments. As long as the rental car is returned in the same condition as when it was collected, this amount is fully refunded to your card with nothing additional to pay.

If you're paying by debit card, the excess amount is taken from your account and refunded when the vehicle is returned. If you intend to use debit card on collection, as the excess amount is often very high, it's recommended to buy Premium Cover on our website or to buy top up insurance at the rental desk.

How to rent a car with Avis including Unlimited Mileage;

We offer limited and unlimited mileage rental.

Limited mileage rentals are often a cheaper option than unlimited. For limited mileage rentals, the mileage allowance will always be clearly displayed. If you choose a rental including limited mileage, you will be charged an additional fee if you exceed the daily allowance. The total mileage allowance for the whole rental period is calculated as (the number of hire days multiplied by the daily allowance). You don't have to stay within the daily allowance on every day, provided that the total miles used throughout the rental doesn't go over the number of days multiplied by the daily limit.

When you opt for a limited mileage rental, we recommend checking the charges for excess mileage. These can be found in our T&Cs.

Avis Car Hire with Cross Border Fees Included

If you want to pick up your car hire and take it across the border into a different country, we strongly recommend to check the terms and conditions. Most car rental providers require that you let them know on collection; and will charge additional fees to top up the insurance. If you fail to do so, it's possible that your rental will not be insured if you take the rental into a different country.
