Essential And Premium Insurance

Here at Stress Free Car Rental, we do things a little differently to most of our competitors. You see, we're not just another car hire comparison website. In fact, we offer two different additional levels of insurance when you book a car for Faro through us.

We offer our unique essential insurance cover. At an incredibly competitive price, our essential cover is offered at the same time as you make your car hire Faro booking . The essential cover is designed as an excess reimbursement policy to cover you for a range of additional charges that standard insurance won't cover you for. It covers you for a range of excess payments such as for damage caused by fire, weather, theft, and more. It also covers you for a range of different types of damage caused to the vehicle, flushing the engine after misfuelling, key cover, and other charges. For a full list of what is and what isn't covered by our essential cover, take a look at our policy document . When you start your booking process with us, the essential cover option will always be available where applicable. You're free to purchase it alongside the hiring of your car from Faro Airport, but be aware that you may still need to pay a bond or deposit when you pick up the vehicle from the car hire company.

When it comes to premium insurance, Stress Free Car Rental is the only price comparison website to offer you the option of directly purchasing the exact excess protection policy that your car hire company offers. Through us, you can buy it in advance alongside the hiring of your car, knowing exactly what the price is and what is covered by it. Of course, because you're buying a policy directly from the car hire company itself, the policies can differ. Fortunately, we always have a link to the exact policy wording when you purchase premium insurance through us - this allows you to see exactly what is covered and what isn't. The reason a lot of our customers opt for premium insurance is because it reduces your excess to zero - ensuring that you have nothing to pay in the event of any damage to the vehicle, no matter how minor or significant.

Car hire insurance, insurance excess and security deposits at Faro Airport

Car hire insurance can be confusing and frustrating, and can even ruin holidays. It's not always clear what exactly it is you're getting for your money and how much cover you're receiving when you book a hire car. One of the reasons is that there are a few different costs that go into making a car hire booking:

  1. The cost of the car hire itself.
  2. Any additional extras you've requested, such as satnav or additional drivers.
  3. The cost of insuring the car.

The reason this can be confusing is that there are different levels of cover and insurance that protect you against different costs. Car insurance is necessary if you're travelling from across Europe to hire a car in Faro, and it will always be included in the cost of the car hire itself. This insurance covers you for theft, damage, fire damage, or even if the car is completely written off.

The reason that a lot of people find themselves getting caught out is the insurance excess. In Europe, there is always an excess to pay on your insurance - it's crucial to remember this. Essentially, your excess is the sum of money that you will be required to pay before your insurance comes into effect . This excess can often be upwards of £1000, with some vehicles even pushing an excess of up to £3000.

The issue arises in particular when this cost becomes hidden in the fine print, and you end up signing up for a car rental in Faro thinking that you're covered, only to find that you have to pay the first £1000 or more of damage in the event of an accident. On top of this, some car hire companies might actually take that money out of your account the moment you arrive for your rental pickup, only to refund it later on if there's no excess needed. Some car hire companies might block the amount on your card, limiting the amount that you can spend while hiring the car on holiday . This can take holidayers by surprise, which can be a real issue. You might have planned your Faro holiday with a certain budget in mind - having upwards of £1000 taken from your account can cause havoc with your holiday plans.

This essentially means that the car hire company has control over how much of the deposit is released back to you later. In turn, this means a few things: not only do you essentially have less money to spend while on your trip thanks to either the excess being blocked on your card or taken out of your account and held during the duration of your car hire, but you also could find yourself having excess charges taken out of your control. For instance, if the car receives a scratch or some other damage, then the car hire company will assess the damage and the resulting costs and automatically subtract this from the amount they release back to you later. This can be different to the way it sometimes works in the US, so if you're more used to booking car rental somewhere in Florida, like Miami, for instance, it's certainly worth noting. It's worth considering that even if no excess is taken out, you may be at the whim of currency fluctuations over the period of your holiday. Even if you bring the car back in completely top condition, changes in currency value could actually mean that you lose money between the dates of the excess being taken and then returned.

Sightseeing In Faro

Located on a cliffside incredibly close to the Mediterranean sea, and known for its nightlife and many beaches, Faro is the best known and capital city of Portugal's southernmost region, the Algarve. It's a city with a long history and there's plenty to see - from the renaissance cathedral and archaeological museum to the nearby Roman ruins and Moor villages, tourist, travellers and holidayers from across Europe are attracted to the city of Faro for its history and the sightseeing opportunities.

With that in mind, we thought that we'd compile some of the best places in Faro to explore with the freedom granted by our range of rental cars:

  1. Cidade Velha (The Old Town) & the Arco da Vila - Head to Faro's Old Town for a much different experience to that which the rest of the city offers. Whitewashed buildings and terracotta tiles, cobbled streets, calcada portuguesa pavements, and intimate little squares are all on offer in the Cidade Velha . Thanks to numerous earthquakes and British bombardments, the architecture on view is varied and historic. Head to the cathedral and the beautiful plaza outside that's lined with orange trees for a gorgeous photo opportunity.

To get there, consider travelling through and under the Arco da Vila, Faro's old waterside gateway. Some of its stonework goes back over 1000 years thanks to the original Moorish builders and if you look above you'll see the balustrade and belfry, upon which a stork's nest is maintained. Thanks to a redesign conducted by Italian architect Francisco Xavier Fabri in the 18th century and 19th century, however, the gate now has a commanding and imposing Neo-Classical and Renaissance appearance. The gate was created to give seafarers coming into Faro an impressive and stately welcome, and you can still see the original Arabic gateway when passing through.

  2. Ilha Deserta - Sometimes known as Barreta Island, the Ilha Deserta is a remote sand bar island directly south of Faro. Part of the Rio Formosa National Park, the Ilha Deserta has some of the most pristine and untouched beaches in the Algarve . They're just as deserted as they sound - apart from the local flamingo population, of course! The area has been protected from tourism and along 9km of golden sand dunes there exists a single building - an exclusive restaurant.

It's a great place to explore - just jump in your rental vehicle and head south. Then, you can catch a 30-minute ferry to get to the island, or even hire a boat out yourself to do some exploring of your own. It's one of the islands that carry on along the coast eastwards, towards Spain. If you need to go for a plunge in the summer, it's the perfect place because the ocean always remains relatively cool year-round.

Upon the Ilha Deserta. you'll be able to find Portugal's most southerly point, the Cabo de Santa Maria. Signified by a monument of ocean driftwood and debris, you can set off on a lovely walk from the harbour to get there across the sand dune. Alternatively, consider approaching from the lagoon side for calm waters perfect for dipping in or even going for a snorkel!

  3. Se de Faro (Faro Cathedral) - If you want to visit somewhere that encapsulates Faro's incredible history, there's nowhere better than the Se de Faro, or Cathedral of Faro. Its history tells the story of the region - originally the site of an ancient Roman temple, it later became an Arabic Mosque when the Moors occupied the region. Then, in 1251, two years after the area was reconquered from the Moors, building began on the cathedral you see today. However, the building was again changed after the English attacked in 1596 and razed part of the building.

Now, you can visit to see the cathedral's imposing appearance, with its looming Gothic tower gazing over Faro's landscape one of the only structures that dates back to the cathedral's beginning. Over the course of the 17th and 18th century, the interior was changed to include gilded woodwork and tiling giving the building a golden and gleaming appearance. Take a look inside to see the amazing design and to see the amazing Baroque organ still there today.

  4. The Capela dos Ossos (The Chapel of Bones) & The Igreja do Carmo - One of the more morbid and macabre delights in Faro is the Capela dos Ossos, or the chapel of bones. One of a few similar sites across Portugal, the Capela dos Ossos in Faro is a small chapel in which the bones of dead monks have been exhumed from their graves and used to line the walls and ceilings . Visiting today, you'll be watched down on by the skulls and bones of thousands of dead monks who were buried in the graveyard when you walk through the chapel.

The Capela dos Ossos can be found within the Igreja do Carmo, one of Faro and the Algarve's most celebrated historical buildings. This church is a classic piece of traditional Portuguese baroque architecture, with gilded woodwork, ornate tile work, and stained glass patterns. From there, you can enter and pass through the building towards the macabre Capela dos Ossos - a stark reminder to worshippers of their mortality.

  5. The Milreu Roman Remains - Only ten minutes drive from Faro in a vehicle rental, you can find a hillside that tells a story thousands of years old. Head to Milreu to view the ancient Roman ruins, where many of the foundations and lower floor still stand. We wouldn't be surprised if visiting the ruins inspired you to book car rental in Italy for your next journey! You can see the famous Roman baths, mosaics and artwork that are still preserved, and evidence of not only the old Roman temple that used to stand there but also a Moorish cemetery dating back to the 10th century.
  6. Faro Municipal Museum - You can find the Faro Municipal Museum within the Convento de Nossa Senhora da Assuncao. This beautiful building dates back to the 16th century, and now houses the second oldest museum in the Algarve , having opened in 1894. Most of the current collection consists of artefacts from the Roman period. This includes the third century Mosaic of the Ocean and the marble busts of Emperor Hadrian and Empress Agrippina. Also on display are several inscribed stones and a fantastic collection of twentieth-century artwork from artists such as Carlos Porfirio. The rest of the exhibitions on display are largely pieces of religious work that has been assembled over the years from dissolved monasteries and churches across south Portugal.
  7. Muralhas de Faro - For more impressive Faro history, take a walk along the Muralhas de Faro, the walls that encircle the compact Old Town of Faro. These walls are said to have pre-Roman origins, before being built and expanded upon by the Romans , with further restoration during the Moorish period of occupation. During the Almohad Caliphate period between the 9th and 12th century, the Arco do Repouso (Arch of Rest) was built. Today, you can still walk through this and the Arco da Porta Nova and Arco da Vila, three of the gateways used throughout the medieval period.

Where To Go In The Algarve

Portugal's Algarve region and Faro, its capital city, have become one of Europe's most coveted and cherished holiday regions in Europe. This is for a number of reasons. Do you want to enjoy drenching in the sun but find some climates too hot? The Algarve coast is tempered by the Atlantic ocean, meaning it's sun-drenched but soft weathered. Combine this with gorgeous natural geography, beautiful golden beaches stretching for miles, an exceptional nightlife, and sumptuous Portuguese cuisine , and you've got everything you could want for a beautiful continental getaway or road trip!

There's a lot to see across the region, from its history and the rich culture on offer to the coastal caves, beaches, and the waterparks and golf courses to explore. If you're here because you want to make a rental booking with a trusted car rental agency for an Algarve road trip, then we think there are some spots you should absolutely make an effort to see. Let's take a look at some of our favourites!

  1. Palácio de Estói - You may be landing at Faro Airport and picking up a rented vehicle without the intention of staying in Faro - you might be heading out across the coast to see as much of the Algarve as you can. In any case, one of the first things you should consider going to see after you land is the village of Estoi , and the gorgeous palace that has made the village famous!

It's only 10km north of Faro, making it a great first stop-off after picking up your vehicle up from the car rental agency. Found close to local Roman ruins, the Palacio de Estoi is a gorgeous pink palace with an opulent and grandiose interior. With moulded stucco, an amazing stairway and terraced gardens with a wonderful pavilion, it's certainly worth stopping by for a guided tour inside the palace!

  2. Ria Formosa - Do you like nature-spotting and getting in amongst rich wildlife? Jump in your rented vehicle and head to Ria Formosa. Considered to be one of Portugal's 'seven wonders', Ria Formosa is a nature reserve protecting a huge lagoon that stretches across 60 kilometres of the Algarve coast . If you love getting out and about and seeing the natural beauty and greatest scenery around, then the Ria Formosa is one place you should definitely something you should pencil in when booking car hire in Faro.

Formed on salt pans, barrier islands and lagoons, you can find guided boat tours through the Ria Formosa. Alternatively, you can kayak, cycle or hike through the park. Whilst doing so, you'll see the rich birdlife with ospreys, flamingos, razorbills, shanks, stilts, spoonbills and more all calling the Ria Formosa home. Keep an eye out for the Purple Swamphen bird and other protected species in particular! The area is also rich with small marine life, with small traditional fishing communities still living off the land in a sustainable manner.

  3. The Olhao Fish Market - Enjoy fresh and delicious seafood? Want to make sure you experience some authentic Portuguese cuisine on your holiday or road trip? Just ten minutes away from Faro and an easy journey for rental cars from Faro Airport is the striking red fish market in the town of Olhao. Based on the waterfront, head for a lazy stroll through the stalls for a taste of the local wares! Based so close to the sea, a lot of the seafood and fish on offer is incredibly fresh. You can head to plenty of local restaurants as well, where fresh grilled fish is both cheap and delicious. One fun fact: One fun fact: visiting the Olhao fish market might just inspire you to rent a car in Paris for your next holiday abroad! Why's that? Well, the red fish market building in Olhao was designed by... Gustave Eiffel! That's right, the very same architect who designed the Eiffel Tower and contributed towards the building of the Statue of Liberty!
  4. Church of São Lourenço - North West of Faro you'll find the town of Loulé - somewhere you'll definitely want to drive through to fully enjoy car hire potential in the Algarve. Why's that? Well, for one very simple reason: the Church of São Lourenço, otherwise known as the Igreja de Louça (Church of China) . It's named that because, while the whitewashed exterior of the building is nothing out of the ordinary in southern Portugal, what you find on the inside is quite astonishing. A Baroque church dating back to the 18th century, the walls and ceiling are entirely fitted with amazing blue azulejos - ceramic tiles glazed with tin. This makes the interior of the church absolutely astounding, and definitely somewhere rental cars need to stop off and investigate!
  5. Castelo de Silves - Head west down the Algarve coast from Faro and you'll find the town of Silves. Here, there's a fantastic historic castle that looms over the town from up on the hill. It's said that the site was used as a strategic military site as far back as the Romana or Visigoths, while the well-preserved ramparts date back to the Arabic rule of the Moors. With the changes made in later years, the castle now has an impressive Gothic medieval look that attracts visitors and holidayers from across Europe to the area. It's a long way to the top, but reward yourself with some phenomenal views of the Algarve countryside and some refreshments when you've made it!
  6. Lagos Old Town - Faro isn't the only town in the Algarves with an amazing Old Town to go and explore! The historic centre of Lagos is absolutely gorgeous, and you'll often see people in convertible car hires driving through the town enjoying the air and the sights around them. Between the 16th and 18th century, Lagos was the Algarve's capital. There's great history in the narrow cobbled streets lined with buildings decorated in Portugal's striking blue azulejos tiles. With Moorish defences and museums dedicated to the town's history, Lagos also has an excellent surfing scene for anyone wanting to catch a wave!
  7. Cape St Vincent - Interested in seeing the southwesternmost point in mainland Europe? Then you ought to hop in your reliable but cheap car hire and head down to Cape St Vincent, otherwise known as Cabo de São Vicente. Just 6 kilometres outside the centre of Sagres on the coast, Cape St Vincent is a stunning location of great geographical significance, not to mention historical significance as well ! Many naval battles and clashes have been fought in the hotly contested ocean off of Cape St Vincent. There's a single lighthouse built upon the foundations of a derelict convent.

Until late into the 14th century, Cape St Vincent was essentially the edge of the known world for Europeans. There still exists the ruins of an old monastery by the lighthouse, with a museum dedicated to Portuguese history and exploration. Aside from the significance of the location, it's also a place of absolutely breathtaking natural beauty.

Things To Do In Faro And The Algarve Region

There's plenty to see in Faro and the Algarve region of Portugal. It's one of the things that makes Faro one of Europe's ideal car hire locations, with travellers being able to fly to and pick up a vehicle rental and immediately get out on the road, free to explore the sun-drenched region's sights! But as a car rental agency here at Stress Free Car Rental, we understand that sometimes you don't want to spend all your time just looking at things - for the greatest adventure, you want things to go out and do, too. Whether it be outdoor activities, something physical, or just beaches to find. Fortunately, there's plenty to do in Faro and the Algarve.

  • Praia de Faro - First, something you can do straight out of the airport! Rather than heading straight to your hotel or Faro city centre, consider heading straight to Praia de Faro after arriving in Faro Airport. Why? It's the perfect introduction to the relaxed south coast atmosphere and Portuguese cuisine - there's a gorgeous length of beach with countless bars, cafes and restaurants lining the coast. Go for a bar crawl and explore the best things to eat and drink right out of the airport!
  • Aqualand Algarve - Got kids with you, or simply want to go out and have a splash about? Well, hop into your rental vehicle and head to Aqualand Algarve - it's only about 40 minutes away from Faro itself , and is one of the most popular choices for local family days out. It has something to suit people of all ages, with a wave surfing pool, plenty of slides, areas for young children to play, plenty of outdoor swimming pools, and much more to enjoy! It's open from June to September, so if you find yourself in the region during the sweltering summer months, Aqualand Algarve is a great place to go to cool off!
  • Zoomarine Algarve - Another great option for a family road trip or a simple day out near Faro is the Zoomarine Algarve. With plenty of sea life on display, you can go to see the sea lions and dolphins, as well as the bird shows they frequently put on. There's an aquarium to visit, an educative and interactive dinosaur section, and even an 'Americas' wildlife habitat you can walk through. Some European zoos and sea life centres have deservedly bad reputations, but you can rest assured that Zoomarine Algarve plays a very active role in local marine conservation and protection - so you know that the animals are being looked after and that proceeds are going to all the right places. Zoomarine also boasts enough to accommodate a full day out, with a local beach, small water park, and fairground rides on offer too.
  • Play Golf - Are you an avid golfer? There are very few places in Europe better than the Algarve to indulge in this particular hobby. The strange thing is that 50 years ago, golf was completely unknown in the region. Today, however, it's one of the premier locations across Europe, with 42 top-quality courses and 35 different clubs to choose from. In particular, Quinta da Ria, Palmares close to Lagos, and Oceanico in Vilamoura are among the most popular.
  • Go Hiking or Cycling - One of the things the Algarve region is best known for is its natural beauty and stunning coastline. As such, it's got a great reputation as a fantastic place to hike through, go for long walks along the coast, and to go for bike rides under the beating sun. Most people who travel to the region spend most of their time enjoying the Algarve beaches, but we've got a tip for enthusiastic hikers and cyclists: jump into your rental vehicle and head inland towards the picturesque Serra de Monchique, the mountain range that divides the Algarve from the Alentejo region in the north . You'll find the Pico da Foia at over 900 metres tall - the tallest mountain in southern Portugal. Monchique is also surrounded by cool hills covered in strawberry trees for more gentle walks than the Pico da Foia.
  • Go Dolphin Watching - You'll struggle to spend much time along the Algarve coast without seeing numerous boat trips advertised. One of the best options for an ocean boat trip is definitely dolphin spotting - common and bottlenose dolphins are both found in the ocean around the region, so you can almost guarantee that you'll get a good view of some dolphins during your trip. Dolphins are incredibly sociable and curious, so don't surprised if you get introduced to a huge pod of 50 or so dolphins while on your boat trip! A quick tip from us: find a company offering dolphin watching that brings a marine biologist with them on the trip. This way, you can turn an already magical experience into something insightful with information about the dolphin physiology and habits!

Where To Eat In Faro

  1. Adega Nova - Want to experience gorgeous traditional Portuguese cuisine? Head down to Adega Nova, where fresh fish is always on the menu, served with salad and vegetables. This is a somewhat hidden gem for tourists with plenty of local clientele visiting on a regular basis . The food is simple but fantastic value for money, and we, in particular, recommend the absolutely huge seafood skewers.
  2. Portas de Sao Pedro - Enjoy tapas and getting a wide range of small bites to eat so that you can enjoy as much of the menu as possible? We do too! That's why we love Portas de Sao Pedro, a little place set outside the more touristy centre of Fao . It's a local favourite known for serving some of the best food in Faro, if you want to enjoy a wide range of Portuguese tapas-style food then Portas de Sao Pedro is the place to go!
  3. Chefe Branco - Love fresh seafood? Then you need to try traditional Portuguese cataplana while you're in Faro - it's a fish stew cooked in a particular kind of pot with a tomato base. Chefe Branco is absolutely one of the best restaurants in Faro for enjoying a steaming cataplana in the fresh outdoors . Grab a bottle of red and truly make the most of your time on the Portuguese south coast.
  4. Quente e Frio - If you want to make the most of the Portuguese sunshine, why not head out in the morning or afternoon to Quente e Frio? Here, you can grab a lovely cup of coffee and some gorgeous pastel de nata (Portuguese custard tarts) and sit outside on the terrace with a gorgeous view - the perfect place to pick up a book and grab some rays!

Driver Requirements At Faro Airport

If this is your first time driving in Portugal, or the first time that you've driven there in a long time, then it might be that you might want a reminder about some of the rules and what to expect. The fact is that hiring a rental vehicle and driving across Portugal's south coast can be a wonderful experience, given the amazing natural beauty and stunning coastline on offer. There's plenty to see and do in the Algarve region, from historical monuments to small coastal villages and stunning resorts. Generally speaking, Portugal's roads are modern and very well maintained. However, it's worth noting that some of the secondary and countryside roads can be found in quite a poor condition . If you're planning on driving through the countryside and seeing some of Portugal's natural landscape, then it's important to be aware that you might find yourself driving over some rough roads.

Portuguese drivers also have something of a reputation for driving over the speed limit and attempting to overtake on narrow roads and small spaces. If you've not driven in Portugal before and you're unaccustomed to the local driving habits in the Algarve region, we always recommend that you drive particularly cautiously and remain aware of the other drivers on the road. You may find Portuguese drivers a little more aggressive on the road than in your home country.

What Do I Need To Have With Me When Driving In Portugal?

Portuguese driving laws may well be different to the laws you're used to. With that in mind, it's worth having a clear checklist of items that you'll need to keep with you whilst driving on the roads of Portugal . When planning your trip, arranging a rental vehicle, and setting off for your trip through Portugal, make sure that you keep in the vehicle with you:

  • Your valid passport - If Portuguese police notice that your car clearly isn't local, it might make them more likely to stop you and make sure that you have all the necessary documents. As a foreign driver, it's important to keep your passport alongside to evidence who you are.
  • An up to date driving license - As in most other European countries, it is illegal to drive on the roads without a valid driving license. Be aware that if your license doesn't have a photo attached, you will instead need to acquire an International Driving Permit for your travels.
  • Safety equipment - You will also need to be aware that Portuguese laws require you to keep safety items in your car that may differ from those of your home country. If planning on hiring a rental vehicle to drive in Portugal, you will need to keep a safety warning triangle, spare light bulbs for your lights and reflective vests and jackets in the car with you.
  • Any necessary paperwork - When it comes to driving rental cars in Portugal, you'll need to keep all related paperwork with you while driving. This might include the agreements of your booking car hire and any insurance details.

Portuguese Toll Roads

European countries often approach tolls and tolling differently, so if you're travelling to Faro Airport and planning on driving a rental pickup on the Portuguese roads from somewhere else in Europe such as the UK and Ireland, then you might want to know a bit more before travelling.

In Portugal, most motorways are toll roads, somewhat similar to the system in France. You can pay at toll booths using either cash or credit card as you go. You'll often pick up a ticket when you enter the toll roads, which you then hand in with payment at the end. There are a few different ways to pay, including TOLLCard, TOLLService, and EasyTOLL . These systems allow you to either purchase pre-loaded cards or tickets or simply set up an automatic payment from your bank account.

However, if you're planning on using the toll roads a great deal, then you might want to make use of Portugal's 'Via Verde', or Green Lane system. These fast lanes are usually found to be the two lanes furthest to the left and they use an electronic toll payment system. They are signified and marked by a green 'V', standing for Via Verde. These roads are well-signposted thanks to the large green signs. But, if you're new to Portuguese driving and you find yourself having driven your rental vehicle down one of the Green Lanes by mistake, then you can go to a Via Verde office and make payment within 48 hours to avoid a fine.

Portuguese Speed Limits

Over recent years, Portugal has begun to crack down on people found either drink-driving or driving over the speed limit. As such, Portuguese police are on the lookout for illegal driving, and may well pull you over if you are seen speeding - especially as a foreign driver. It's always recommended to drive cautiously and safely when visiting Portugal.

If you do receive one or multiple speeding fines, you will find that they are scaled according to how far over the speed limit you were caught driving. A good example of this is that if you are caught driving between 30 and 60 km/h over the limit, you might receive a fine of around €600. However, if you are caught driving between 60 and 80 km/h over the limit, you could receive a fine as high as €1,500. he general speed limits in Portugal are:

  • Built-up and urban areas: 50 km/h
  • Rural roads and open roads: 90 km/h
  • Motorways: 120 km/h

Parking In Portugal

As in most European countries, parking restrictions are enforced in major Portuguese cities. If you're planning on spending some time in Faro or are travelling to another major city, it's good to be aware of things to keep an eye out for whilst driving and parking a hire vehicle in Faro and the Algarve . If not, you might be fined or, on repeated offence, be given points on your license. Which, in turn, could affect the insurance policy on your rental vehicle. Some of the things to keep an eye out for while driving and parking in Portugal include:

  • White and blue signs with a red line across them. This is usually used in urban areas to signify a no parking zone.
  • Signs saying: Estacionamento Proibido or Proibido Estacionar. These are 'no parking' signs and are always used to indicate an area in which you cannot park.
  • Signs painted on the curb in yellow and red. These also signify prohibited parking areas, much like double yellow lines in the UK and Ireland.
  • Junctions, tram stops, and bus stops. In Portugal, you can't park within 5m of a junction, within 6m of a tram stop, or either 25m before or 5m after a bus stop.

If you're planning on spending most of your time in Faro itself, it's worth knowing that most parking in Faro is paid. However, a quick tip for parking suggestions: there are free parking spaces to be found near Largo de Sao Francisco , a square near the walls and within simply and easy walking distance of Faro city centre.

General Tips For Driving In Portugal

It's always good to be clear about what you can and can't do while driving in a foreign country. If you're travelling to Faro Airport from the UK and Ireland, France, Germany, Holland, or elsewhere in Europe and you're hiring a rental vehicle on your trip, then you might suddenly find yourself on the roads in Portugal, realising that you're not sure exactly what the laws are . For instance, ever found yourself suddenly confused by which side of the road you're supposed to be driving on or which direction to take around a roundabout? It can happen to any of us! That's why we think it's good to have a refresher on some things to remember while driving in Portugal:

  • First and foremost: you must drive on the right in Portugal! While this may be straightforward for most European drivers, those travelling from the UK and Ireland will certainly need to take note of this.
  • Seatbelts must be fitted and it's compulsory for all passengers of a moving vehicle to be wearing them.
  • Using a mobile phone whilst driving is illegal - unless you have a blue tooth and hands-free system installed.
  • It's also illegal to wear headphones while driving.
  • You need to have third party insurance as a minimum and you must have your insurance sticker displayed on your front windscreen.
  • If you have passengers who are children under the age of 12, it's illegal for them to sit in one of the front seats - unless they are over 150cm tall.
  • You can't overtake on the right in free-flowing traffic - doing so is illegal.
  • If you are caught committing a driving offence, you'll receive an on the spot fine.
  • Petrol (leaded and unleaded), diesel and LPG fuel types are all readily available at any petrol station or garage. You may be required to pay a small charge if paying by card.

Optional Extras - What's Not Included?

If you require any extras with your Faro car hire, you'll need to pay for these at the car rental area during pickup. You'll need to find your car hire company's desk at arrivals and purchase your extras there. It's worth noting that these extras aren't always guaranteed and the prices are subject to change between different vehicles and different car rental companies. Some of the extras you may want to purchase can include:

  • Additional drivers.
  • GPS and Satnav systems.
  • Child seats.
  • Extra mileage.
  • Being able to bring the car back with an empty tank.

In most European countries, child seats are legally mandatory for children under 12 years old or 135cm in height. This is also the case in Portugal, so if you're bringing children with you during your Faro and Algarve car hire, you'll need to take this into consideration. However, it can be different elsewhere in the world. If you're also planning on renting a car somewhere else internationally, like Los Angeles or South Africa, then you'll need to make sure that you understand the legal requirements of that country when it comes to using a child's seat in the back of your car.

When you make a booking through our website, we'll make sure that you can see all the potential extras that can come with your vehicle. We'll also let you book these in advance, which is fantastic because we can't always guarantee availability on the day.

Why Choose Stress Free Car Rental?

We're a little bit different here at Stress Free Car Rental. In fact, we started this business because we got tired of seeing people have their holidays ruined by hidden car hire costs and unexpected fees. We set up Stress Free Car Rental to be the antidote to this kind of behaviour, and our customers have thanked us for it . We have dedicated ourselves to providing a transparent service with no hidden fees - that's because we're a team of real people who desperately want to help our customers have the best holiday possible. We know how horrible it is to have a holiday ruined.

You want a booking process that is as clear and fair as possible, and we know that. That's why we've put a great deal of work into making sure our booking process is quick, easy, and transparent. We've got a lot of options to filter out different deals with all the key information spelt out on the page for you to explore if you need. Our pricing is fair and highly competitive, but it's also realistic. We provide an excellent service here at Stress Free Car Rental, and while cheaper options may be available, we're a firm believer in that you get what you pay for. For what we offer, we don't think we can be matched on price.

If you do find better pricing elsewhere, let us know and we'll guarantee a price match. Our pricing is comprehensive and always includes additional charges such as young or old driver fees and late drop-off fees - this is because we know that it's clearer and easier for you to handle your services in as few payments as possible, rather than a lot of smaller charges.

We're based in the UK, making us the perfect go-to car hire solution for anyone hoping to hire a car in Europe who is travelling from the UK and Ireland. Not to mention the fact that we also offer some of the best car rental in the UK and Ireland too! We're also renowned for our amazing UK-based customer support team - we're always on hand to help out, provide additional advice and assistance, and to help deal with any issues that crop up.

Interested in finding out more about our service and how we can help to match you with the ideal Faro car hire solution for you? Just get in touch with us today to discover our fantastic service .
