Car Hire In Spain

From the stunning beaches that line the Costa del Sol, to the impressive architecture found in Barcelona, Grenada and Santiago, Spain certainly has a lot to offer travellers, regardless of whether they're travelling alone, with a group of friends or as part of a family trip. If you're planning a trip to Spain, but don't want to get around by bus, coach or plane, then why not hire a car that gives you the opportunity to explore all that this fantastic country has to offer, and more? Giving you the flexibility to go where you want, when you want and with who you want, hiring a car with Stress Free Car Hire ensures a cheaper alternative, and assurance that your trip will be as exciting as you'd like it to be.

We understand the hesitation that comes with hiring a car abroad. You may have heard horror stories of friends getting ripped off, or car hire companies hiding things such as large security deposits and excess amounts within the contracts. You, yourself, may have felt pressured in the past to buy a car hire business's insurance on the day you collected, perhaps exhausted after a long trip, or because the mounting queue behind you made you feel uncomfortable. That's why we do things differently here at Stress Free Car Rental. With values of transparency, fairness and clarity, we aim to make car hiring in Spain as simple and smooth as possible. Working with only the most trusted car hire companies in Barcelona, Malaga and Alicante, we work to negotiate the very best cover and the most cost-effective car hire possible for your trip. We don't hide extras within the small print either. We ensure you're fully aware of the terms and conditions of your policy, and know exactly what you're paying for.

Car hire in Spain offers the freedom to explore this beautiful country in all its wonder, and even take trips across to neighbouring Portugal and France if you so wish. Whether you're landing at Barcelona International Airport, Alicante International Airport or Malaga Airport, start your trip off right with a car rental from Stress Free Car Rental. With an easy booking process and no quibble cancellation policy and price match guarantee, you really have nothing to lose.

Travelling around on your terms, Spanish car hire provides comfort, style and an ease of transportation. They always say it's the journey and not the destination after all.

All About Barcelona International Airport

Barcelona International Airport is situated 12km southwest of Barcelona - just a 20 minute drive from the city, and within easy reach of Costa Brava. Also located in the municipalities of El Prat de Llobregat, Viladecans, and Sant Boi, in the area of Catalonia - the airport is used for both private and commercial aviation, which includes helicopter charters to the nearby Balearic islands of Ibiza, Majorca and Menorca.

Comprising 2 terminals and 3 runways, Barcelona Airport sees approximately 50 million travellers pass through every single year, and this makes it one of the largest airports in the world. Offering an abundance of services including car rental booths, ATMs, currency exchange and medical services, as well as religious spaces, a pharmacy and VIP rooms, there's also plenty of space to kick back and relax at an array of cafes, bars and restaurants. From Barcelona Duty Free and Express Duty Free through to Mango, Accessorize, Zara and Chocolat Factory, there's a fantastic range of shops to explore too - great for some last minute holiday shopping, and to buy gifts for friends and family you may be visiting.

Barcelona Airport is also well connected for tourists and holidayers. To get to Barcelona, you simply take the Barcelona-Castelledefels motorway C-31. The C-31 motorway leads directly into the city on the Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes, the principal Avenue of Barcelona which runs the length of the city from south to north, and it's relatively easy to get to the centre. Please note that parking can be an issue in Barcelona, so it's always best to reserve a car parking space in advance. Popular tourist attractions in Barcelona include Sagrada Familia, La Rambla, La Boqueria, and of course, Barceloneta Beach.

Hiring a car in Barcelona Airport is incredibly easy, and we'll always be there to guide you throughout the whole process. Discussing our range of basic, essential and premium insurance cover, and whether this includes bodywork damage liability, theft liability and the amount that will be held on your card, you'll have peace of mind knowing exactly what you're paying for.

All About Alicante International Airport

Alicante International Airport, also known as Alicante-Elche Airport, is located 9km southwest of Alicante, in the municipality of Elche. Just a 20 minute drive from Alicante, the airport is a superb choice for those who want to soak in the sun at beaches including Playa del Postiguet, Playa de los Saladares, Albufereta Beach and Playa de la Almadraba, as well as Playa de la Almadraba and Puerta del Mar. There's certainly a lot of choice! Nearby, Alicante offers visitors a range of activities: Santa Bárbara Castle, the Basilica of Santa Maria and the Canelobre Caves, providing much in the way of holiday fun. Whether you're into relaxation, exploration, shopping or historical sites, Alicante truly offers it all, truly spoiling you for choice.

The airport itself is vibrant and alive with culture, and is widely considered one of the busiest airports in Spain. Comprising 3 terminals and 26 gates, travellers can also find tourist information centres, lost and found, a VIP lounge and multipurpose rooms, great for meetings, conventions and courses due to its incorporation of computers, screens, projectors and PA systems, and its capacity for 160 people. Along with popular shops including Swarovski, WH Smith and the Sunglass Hut, there's also plenty of places to eat, drink and be merry too.

From Alamo, Dollar and Enterprise through to Europcar, Hertz, National, Thrifty and Firefly, at Alicante Airport, we can offer you a choice of car brands, ensuring you drive away with a car that you love. Easily found in the airport's main terminal, we'll see you off right in no time at all.

All About Malaga Airport

Malaga Airport, officially known as Málaga–Costa del Sol Airport due to being the gateway to the popular Costa del Sol region, is a hotspot of activity. The fourth busiest airport in Spain after Madrid–Barajas, Barcelona and Palma de Mallorca, it welcomes over 18 million passengers every year, and is just a 25 minute drive away from Malaga itself. Comprising 3 terminals and two runways, Malaga Airport offers much in the way of leisure activities, which includes the Exhibition Hall which houses temporary exhibits by artists who want to showcase their works, as well as the Airport, Navigation and Air Transport Museum which holds over 4000 pieces of aviation history. Shoppers can rejoice at Malaga Airport too, with Pitstop, GAP, Superdry, Parfois and Crystal Media Shop available, along with Sunglass Hut, The Fashion Gallery and Travel Mate. Should you fancy something to eat and drink, the airport offers some sensational options, including Caffe di Fiore, Cafe Pans, La Manon and Whopper Bar, as well as Starbucks and Carte D'or.

Malaga is easily reachable from the airport: simply take the MA-23 link road toward the M-20 motorway heading toward Malaga. Then, either exiting at the Avenida de Velazquez to the port area or Avenida de Andalucia to the Alhameda and city centre. If you fancy going a little further, you can continue round Malaga city where the MA-20 merges with the A-7, and you'll soon reach a fork junction where you can choose to follow the coast towards Almería, which will take you to the Nerja and Eastern Costa del Sol and the Axarquía, or right lanes to head inland to Granada, Seville or Córdoba. Your hire car can get you there, and even take you further.

From the Ford Focus and Fiat 500, to the Citroen C3, Ford Ka and Seat Ibiza, you can pick up a range of cars from us at Malaga Airport, and we'll ensure you're fully prepped on its operation. Whether you'd like to hire a car for 3 days, 7 days or 16 days, we'll ensure you're aware of all associated costs, as well as those associated with its insurance.

It doesn't matter if you land in Malaga, Alicante or Barcelona. With Stress Free Car Rental, you'll land knowing your perfect car hire is waiting for you, and that you can drive away safe in the knowledge that you're clear on all costs, and that there'll be no nasty surprises when you drop the car back when your trip is complete.

Some of our favourite car hire places in Spain

Spanish Airport Car Hire With Stress Free Car Rental

Car hire in Spain, whether that's from Malaga Airport, Alicante Airport or Barcelona Airport is a great choice for anyone wanting to explore the sights and sounds of the Spanish coastline, as well as the mainland. When you make a booking through Stress Free Car Rental, we'll let you know instantly which of the car hire companies are available at your chosen destination, which may include well-known brands such as Hertz, Europcar and Enterprise. At the airports, you'll be able to find a car rental area at which all the main car rental companies have well-signposted desks. Here, you can pick up the keys to your vehicle, sign all of the necessary paperwork and then start your holiday once and for all.

The locations of these vary from airport to airport, but fortunately, the car rental areas are easy to find. For example, there are over 20 car hire companies in Malaga, 8 of which are located within the airport. These include Europcar, Record & Go, Goldcar, Hertz and Firefly, and we are proud to work with all of them. Outside each of the airports, you'll find street parking from which you can collect your car from. You may also find cheaper options from more independent car hire companies, but it's always worth remembering that what may seem cheap, may include hidden additional fees or a service that won't fully deliver on your requirements.

We pride ourselves on our openness and transparency here at Stress Free Car Rental - so whether you're interested in exploring Malaga, Barcelona or Alicante, or going beyond these beautiful resorts to places such as Madrid, Seville, Valencia and Granada, there's nowhere better to visit first than Stress Free Car Rental. Not only do we work with leading car brands, but when it comes to insurance, we promise to never hide excess risks or security deposits. Our customer support team is also available 8am - 8pm Monday to Friday, so should you ever need any guidance or advice, then they'll only ever be too happy to help. Nothing is ever too much trouble, and with us, an issue is never an issue for long.

Therefore, if you're looking for a Spanish car hire agency that always has your best interests at heart, then in Stress Free Car Rental, you've found it. We're committed to client care, highlighted by our glowing reviews and fantastic testimonials, and will always ensure you have everything you need in terms of the right car and insurance policy.

Car hire insurance, insurance excess and security deposits in Spain

We understand how overwhelming picking the right car insurance can be, as it's not always clear what you're getting for your money, and therefore, which policy is right for you. Part of the issue lies in the costs that comprise a car hire booking, which include:

  1. The cost of hiring the car.
  2. Any extras that you have asked for, such as child car seats and sat nav hire.
  3. The cost of insuring the hire car.

However, many people find themselves faced with unexpected costs due to insurance excess, which is the sum you pay before the insurance kicks in. Typically £1000, it can rise to as much as £3000 for SUVs or premium cars. Unfortunately, a lot of car hire companies hide this in the fine print of their policies, with them taking that money from your account, or blocking the amount on your credit card in case you owe it later. We're not all made of money, and this can truly hinder any plans you may have had with your hard-earned cash.

Fortunately, at Stress Free Car Rental, we're not like that. We offer three levels of cover when you book a car in Spain through us: Basic Cover, Essential Cover and Premium Cover. Depending on your needs, we can discuss the best level of protection for you, giving you peace of mind for your trip.

Essential and Premium Insurance

We do things a little differently at Stress Free Car Rental. We're not just another car hire comparison website. In fact, we offer two additional levels of insurance when you book a hire car for Spain through us.

At a very competitive price, our essential cover is offered at the same time as you make your Spain booking.

Our essential cover is designed to act like an excess reimbursement policy which covers you for a wide range of additional charges that other standard insurance policies won't cover you for.

For instance, it would cover you if the vehicle was damaged, if the engine flooded after misfuelling, if you lost your keys and against other, potentially expensive costs. Take a look at our policy document for more information about what is and isn't covered.

When you start your booking process with us, our essential cover option will always be available wherever applicable. Of course, you're free to purchase it alongside the hiring of your car from either Barcelona, Malaga or Alicante airport, but be aware that you may still have to pay a bond or deposit when you pick up the vehicle from the car hire company.

When it comes to premium insurance, Stress Free Car Rental is the only price comparison website that has the option of directly purchasing the exact protection policy that your chosen car hire company offers.

With Stress Free Car Rental, you can buy it in advance alongside the hiring of your car while knowing exactly what the price is and what is covered by it. Policies can and do differ because you're purchasing it from the car hire company itself.

Fortunately, we always provide links to the exact policy wording if you choose to purchase premium insurance through us, and this transparency allows you to see exactly what is, and what isn't, covered.

There are plenty of reasons why customers choose premium insurance but the main reason is that it reduces your excess to zero. This ensures you have nothing to pay in the event of any damage to the vehicle, no matter how significant.

Sightseeing In Barcelona, Malaga And Alicante

What to do in Barcelona

  1. La Sagrada Familia - Despite the fact that it hasn't actually been finished ( construction started in 1882) La Sagrada Familia is an absolute must-visit. With its sprawling network of cranes interspersed with stunning architecture, designed by famous architect Antonio Gaudi, La Sagrada Familia is quite the feast for the eyes. Construction is due to finish in 2026 which will mark the centenary of Gaudi's death so if you want to see it in it's unique state then you've still got a few years. Tickets start from €20 and can be bought on online prior to your visit.
  2. Camp Nou - Mes Que Un Club. That's FC Barcelona's famous motto and after a visit to their home stadium, it's easy to see why. This colosseum of football has played host to some iconic games over its 63-year history and your visit to Barcelona wouldn't be complete without a stadium tour. Or why not buy some tickets to a La Liga game and soak up that notorious atmosphere? Hop in your newly acquired rental car and take the 24-minute drive from the centre of Barcelona to the famous old stadium via Avinguda Diagonal.
  3. Montserrat - If you fancy escaping the hustle and bustle of the city, take a drive in your rental car to Catalonia's holiest site - Montserrat. The views from the top of the monastery are spectacular - but be sure to bring your best walking shoes as the journey up there is a rugged one. This holy site can be found 40 miles north-west of Barcelona and should only take you an hour or so to get there in your hire car.

What to do in Malaga

  1. Picasso Museum - View some of Pablo's most famous works at this fantastic museum, located in the heart of Malaga. The museum houses all of Picasso's famous works from his works with Cubism right through to the Neoclassical phase. It's great value too, tickets range from €8 to €12 with reduced fees available for people over 65 and students.
  2. Castillo Gibralfaro - A beautiful spot to take in the sweeping sights of this historic city. Built-in the 14th Century to house troops, this spectacular castle is a jewel in Malaga's crown and stands proudly among the Malaga skyline. The castle itself is not free but there are several walking paths that surround the castle, and we'd recommend heading up there just before sunset for truly mind-blowing views as the sky turns shades of pink, orange and purple.
  3. Frigiliana - Take your hire car and drive out to the stunning whitewashed village of Frigiliana. Less than an hours drive east of Malaga it is easy, once you've arrived, to get lost in the gorgeous back streets and picturesque views. Visit the old quarter, Mudéjar, and stumble across shops and spots to enjoy some traditional Spanish tapas.

What to do in Alicante

  1. Santa Barbara Castle - Built on the remains of a 9th-century Arabic fortress, this current iteration of Santa Barbara Castle dates back to the 18th century. It's hard to understate how extraordinary these views are. Take the lift or if you're feeling like a walk, stroll through the Parque de la Ereta where you'll reach this stunning cliff-top castle. If you're feeling thirsty after your hike then enjoy a well-earned drink at the cafe located at the summit.
  2. Santa Cruz - Not so much a specific place, Santa Cruz is more an area of Alicante that you don't want to miss out on. Expect winding, flower-drenched back streets that lead to different squares and lanes, all of which are packed with charming, atmospheric spots that serve local tapas and drinks. Go in early May and you might just catch the local parade celebrating the Easter Week celebrations.
  3. Altea - Located 40 minutes northeast of Alicante, Altea is a picture-perfect town located on the coast and is absolutely worth a visit in your hire car. Drenched in brilliant white the main square is full of boutique shops. Explore the beautiful blue-domed church, which stands out among the pure white that is the rest of the town. If you're looking for a tranquil day out then a trip in your hire car to Altea is an absolute must.

Where To Eat In Barcelona, Malaga, And Alicante

Eating in Barcelona

  1. La Boqueria - Located in the heart of the city La Boqueria is a must-visit. Whether it's your first or fifth time in Barcelona, La Boqueria, with its vibrant public market and diverse selection of food, never disappoints. You'll find this sprawling market just 7 minutes from the Cathedral of Barcelona, 8 minutes from The Plaça de Catalunya and just 17 minutes from the iconic La Sagrada Familia. We'd recommend checking out Pinotxo Bar and El Quim de La Boqueria.
  2. Bar La Plata - You can't visit Spain, let alone Barcelona, without enjoying some traditional tapas! And there are few better places to get your hands on some tasty small plates than Bar La Plata. Bar La Plata, or simply just La Plata to the locals, can be found in the famous Gothic quarter of Barcelona, making it a great spot to rest up after viewing the city's most iconic architecture. They only offer four dishes, the highlight being the Pescadito Frito - meaning fried fish. So, order all four, a porrón of wine and you're all set for a fantastic time at La Plata.

Eating in Malaga

  1. Restaurante La Deriva - Set back slightly from the Guadalmedina river, this lively and bustling spot is perfect after a busy day shopping in Malaga's Calle Larios - plus, it's only a short 8-minute walk along the Alameda Principal. At Restaurante La Deriva, expect a relaxed vibe and some mouthwatering dishes. We'd recommend the grilled octopus, the saffron risotto or oysters. They've also got a very tempting cheese board and a range of delicious vermouths!
  2. El Pimpi - A must for anyone visiting Malaga for the first time and a favourite with the locals. Enjoy some of Malaga's most delicious small plates while checking out the celebrity-signed sherry barrels. We recommend sharing the famous Iberian Ham, which pairs wonderfully with the Artichokes & Sweet Potato Cream. El Pimpi can be found just a 16-minute walk from Malaga's beautiful beach, the Playa de la Malagueta.

Eating in Alicante

  1. Cervecería Sento Barrio - Located just minutes from Alicante port, Sento Barrio is a charming little spot where you can sit on the bar and enjoy their exciting, imaginative grilled tapas dishes all while soaking up the bustling atmosphere. It wouldn't hurt to try their montaditos (little rolls) too - they are a real treat.
  2. Bodeguita 1999 - Slap bang in the heart of Alicante, Bodeguita 1999 is one of the top-rated places to visit in the local area (according to Google at least) and after a visit there, it's easy to see why. With its modern decor and a sumptuous selection of steaks, we'd also recommend a side of fried asparagus. This might just be the place where you fall in love with Alicante.

We've suggested a few attractions and some of the best things to do while you're in Spain. Driver Requirements In Spain

Driving in Spain and on Spanish roads isn't particularly difficult. But, before your trip, it's important to know a few things so that when you're there, you won't have anything to worry about it.

Spanish authorities and Guardia Civil are good at making you aware of established speed limits. Like in France, radar detectors are banned so you needn't worry about that.

The rules of the road in Spain are fairly similar to that of the UK. The Spanish drink-drive limit is 0.5 mg/ml of blood and decreases to 0.3 mg/ml for people with fewer than 3 years' of experience behind the wheel. It is against the law to carry spare petrol however you can be fined for running out of petrol on specified main roads, for more information about how we help when it comes to petrol, check out our Full to Full Fuel Policy. And finally, when on a Spanish roundabout, a car that is on the roundabout has priority over those that don't.

At this point we'd also like to offer a bit of advice, Spain is a very large country and driving around there in your cheap rental car from Stress Free Car Rental can be tiring. If you're planning on doing long and tiring journeys we'd recommend adding an additional driver or extra driver to your rental contract. While this may be a little more expensive (usually it's around £10 a day but it can be more expensive) it'll be worth it if you're driving for long hours on one of Spain's many motorways.

There are some slightly different road signs in Spain that you should be aware of, these are as follows.

a. Perform u-turn on next level
b. Turn on headlights
c. Check your headlights
d. Speed cameras ahead
  1. If you have to do a u-turn this sign tells you to take the next right and perform the u-turn on the next level.
  2. You should switch your headlights on.
  3. Drivers should check their headlights and switch them off if necessary.
  4. There are speed cameras ahead.

As well as some different signs, it's important to be aware of speed limits. Note: it's important to know that there's a 60 km/h (37 mph) minimum speed on the motorway.

Road Speed Limit
Built-up areas 50km/h - 31mph
Single carriageways 90km/h - 55mph
Dual carriageways 100km/h - 62 mph
Motorways 120 km/h - 74 mph

Until the Brexit transition period ends (at the end of 2020) the driving rules are the same.

For more information about driving in 2021 and beyond visit the Government website.

  • International Driving Permit (IDP) - If you have a non-EU driving license you'll need an IDP. For more information on IDPs, visit this Government page.
  • Proof of address - Printed on a utility bill or credit card bill. A credit card statement might need to be for the same credit card you used for the security deposit on the hire car.

  • Spare glasses

    • Reflected/hi-vis jacket

Spanish Toll Roads

When approaching a Spanish toll road, most will take cash or credit cards for payment. The most common way to pay is by taking a ticket when you enter the entry section and paying by cash when you leave the motorway. Those paying by card will see specific lanes where you'll insert your ticket and complete the payment that way.

Some toll roads have fixed fees regardless of how long you spend on it and some depend on the length of time spent. In terms of cost, Spanish toll roads are largely controlled by the local authority. They will set prices for all the toll roads in their area. Some will cost as little as a euro per ten kilometres while others might be twice that price.

General Tips For Driving In Spain

As well as being courteous, be aware of your surroundings and present while driving (all of which apply, no matter where you're driving). As well as the usual stuff we'd also recommend looking at adding an additional driver or extra driver to your car hire contract, as we mentioned earlier if you plan on driving for long hours then having that option is something you'll be glad you arranged. There are a few general tips that we advise people who hire a car from us to do when driving in Spain:

  • Drivers approaching intersections must give way to vehicles from the right
  • Vehicles on rails and emergency vehicles have priority
  • Persistent use of horns is prohibited. In built-up urban areas, the use of horns is prohibited unless in the event of an emergency.
  • The wearing of seatbelts is compulsory in all vehicles.
  • When travelling with children, those 12 & under and measuring less than 135cm sitting on the front seat must be fitted with a child restraint system that is adapted to their size & weight. This also applies to children sitting in the back seat.
  • On the spot, fines can be imposed by police. These can be reduced by 50% if paid within 20 days. It can be contested in 15 days. For people visiting they must pay immediately unless they can give the name of a person who is a Spanish resident that can guarantee payment.
  • Parking is prohibited within 5 metres of a bend or intersection
  • The maximum period to park in the commonly seen blue parking zones is two hours, however, there is usually no limit between 8pm and 8am.
  • If you park your rental car on an inadequately lit street, you must keep your sidelights illuminated.
  • Vehicles must be parked on the right-hand side of the carriageway except on one-way streets where it's allowed on both sides.
