About Barcelona

The seaside city is known for its stunning architecture, vibrant culture, amazing cuisine, and exceptional nightline. Barcelona has an enthralling history that has played a part in its vast growth over the years. Its history involves its hand over from one colonial power to another resulting in a lot of battles that lasted over 2,000 years. In earlier centuries, the region was dominated by the Phoenicians who named it Barcino. Your rental car will be covered for accidents and theft as part of the hire price you'll see displayed on our website. This insurance is also known as Collision Damage Waiver (CDW).

Although all of our rental cars in Barcelona come with CDW in the price , there's also usually an insurance excess, this excess is held on your credit card on collection. The insurance excess is the amount you'd be required to pay if the car is written off, severely damaged or stolen. However, the excess on hire cars can be high. It's normally between £800 to £3,000, depending on the car, the country and the deal. If you return the car damaged, or it's stolen or written off, you'll have to pay up to the total amount of the excess.

On collection of the vehicle, the insurance excess is held on your card as something called a 'pre-auth' transaction. This means that the money isn't charged to your card as a normal transaction, it's held as a pending transaction until you drop off the vehicle. You won't usually pay foreign currency fees on credit cards for pre authorised payments, so provided the car is returned in the same condition as when it was collected, the amount is fully refunded to your card without anything further to pay.

If you're paying by debit card, the excess amount will be taken from your bank account and refunded when the vehicle is returned. If you intend to use debit card on collection, as the excess amount can be high, it's recommended to buy Premium Cover when you book or to buy top up cover at the collection desk.

Car hire jargon explained

Essential Cover

Buying excess cover means you'll be reimbursed for the excess that's held on your credit card by the hire car company .

Excess reimbursement insurance also tends to cover other potential costs, such as towing, cleaning or admin fees, or misfuelling costs.

Fuel policy (full to full vs full to empty)

The hire cars at Barcelona on the site always include a full to fuel fuel policy.

You'll be required to pay a small deposit for fuel on a credit card when you pick up the car. Fill the rental up and return it full and there's nothing further to pay for fuel.

You might find full to empty policies on other websites that seem to be offering better deals. Always check the terms and conditions for full to empty rentals as usually the admin and refuelling costs associated with full to empty fuel policies always make it much more expensive than full to full .

Additional driver costs

Car rental contracts at Barcelona is between the hire car company and the person that signs the agreement and will be the main driver. This means you need to ask for any other drivers to be added, this usually comes with a cost (which can be up to £13a day at Barcelona ). However, there are occasional special offers that include extra drivers are free. Beware of being asked if you'd like to include a driver without being informed of the cost.
