SUVs for rental in Birmingham

BMW X5

Nissan Qashqai

Renault Captur

BMW X5 Nissan Qashqai Renault Captur
Category: Large SUV Medium SUV Small SUV
Great for: Loads of passenger space in both front and rear seats. Very high quality interior and fun to drive. Comfortable and practical. Great fuel economy for this class of car. The best to drive in the small SUV category with a surprising amount of luggage capacity. Perfect if you're trying to find something that feels like driving a smaller car but has a higher driving position with improved visibility.
Not so great for: If you're not accustomed to driving a car this size it can feel difficult to manoeuvre. Some other SUVs have more space. The interior is a little dated. The diesel engine version suffers with quite a lot of engine noise. Although there is a good amount of luggage space, internal cabin storage space is limited.
Most popular rental model and options:
  • Engine size: 3L
  • Gearbox: Automatic
  • Fuel Policy: Full to full
  • Average insurance excess : £1,200
  • Average security deposit : £1,475
  • Engine size: 1.5L (Diesel)
  • Gearbox: Manual
  • Fuel Policy: Full to full
  • Average insurance excess : £1,150
  • Average security deposit : £1,450
  • Engine size: 1.3L
  • Gearbox: Manual
  • Fuel Policy: Full to full
  • Average insurance excess: £643
  • Average security deposit: £1,450
Driving: Fantastic handling for a car of this size and very little noise on long trips or at high speed. The easiest SUV in this class to drive. Feels like driving a much smaller car. Good to drive on motorways with a little noise at high speed. A reasonably stiff suspension, so you will feel the bumps on bad road surfaces.
Dimensions and fuel efficiency:
  • Vehicle dimensions: 4.922m x 2m x 1.745m
  • Boot space: 500 litres
  • Boot space with rear seats down: 1,720 litres
  • Miles per gallon: 37mpg combined
  • Fuel tank size: 69 litres
  • Vehicle dimensions: 4.39m x 1.8m x 1.59m
  • Boot space: 430 litres
  • Boot space with rear seats down: 1,569 litres
  • Miles per gallon: 74mpg combined (diesel)
  • Fuel tank size: 55 litres
  • Vehicle dimensions: 4.2m x 1.8m x 1.6m
  • Boot space: 406 litres
  • Boot space with rear seats down: 1,235 litres
  • Miles per gallon: 44-59mpg combined
  • Fuel tank size: 39-45 litres
Passenger space: Lots of storage and passenger space in the front. A good amount of room in the back but not quite as much as some other cars in this class. Enough space in the front for taller passengers. Not as much room in the rear as some other SUVs. The back seats are only just about large enough to fit 3 adults but it's a tight fit. When you're travelling with 5 adult passengers it's recommended to choose a larger SUV.
Luggage capacity: Less boot space than some of the alternatives but still a decent amount of space for a couple of large suitcases and a small cabin bag. Practical loading capacity when the rear seats are folded down. Room for 2 large suitcases and a small carry on bag. The back seats are also adjustable to create more storage capacity. 2 large suitcases and 1 carry on sized bag

About Birmingham

Birmingham is the second-largest city in the United Kingdom and the largest city of the West Midlands in the heart of England. It is also one of England's main industrial and commercial centres. The city lies about 177 kilometres (110 miles) northwest of London, which means that you can go on a day trip to the country's capital with your car hire.

In medieval times the settlement of Birmingham was a small manufacturing town. In fact, the city is known as the first manufacturing town in the world. However, in the late 18th century, the city became the leading centre of the Industrial Revolution in Great Britain.

Today, Birmingham remains the main centre of the country's light and medium industry, often described as "the city of a thousand and one trades."

Modern Birmingham is known as the youngest city in Europe with almost half of its population under the age of 25. The city is also home to 571 open spaces and parks – more than any other city of equal size in Europe.

It is a less known fact that Birmingham has an extensive network of waterways, which is even longer than canal waterways in Venice.

Don't miss to visit the famous Jewelry Quarter in Birmingham and learn that this city is responsible for producing more than 40 per cent of the jewellery in the United Kingdom.

From attending family events and city festivals to relaxing in one of Birmingham's many green spaces and countryside, and from enjoying the sports to indulging in excellent food in one of the Michelin-starred restaurants, things to do and see in this amazing city are nearly endless.

Best Time to Visit Birmingham, UK

There are a lot of things to do in the UK's second most largely populated city all-year-round. However, if you want to make the most of the weather, travel to Birmingham during summer months, from June to September. During summer, the weather in the Midlands is pleasant and warm, with lots of sunny days, which is ideal for sightseeing, hiking, or cruising the countryside in your car rental.

Driving In and Around Birmingham

When your flight lands at Birmingham Airport, your car hire will wait for you at the designated pick up location close to the terminal building. The airport is just off of the M42 at junction 6 via the A45. So, it will take you around twenty to thirty minutes-drive to get to the city centre from the airport.

Although Birmingham has a good network of roads in and around the city, you may want to avoid driving your car hire during the peak commuting hours in the morning and in the afternoon. According to recent research, commuters in the West Midlands spend 74 hours stuck in a traffic jam every year.

Events and Festivals in Birmingham

Birmingham is well-known for a diverse range of colourful festivals and events taking place year-round. If you're coming with your family, you should not miss events such as Bournville Book Fest, Doodle, or Bubble Rush.

There is also a list of annual favourites, from Birmingham International Dance Festival and Brindleyplace Film Festival to Moseley Folk & Arts Festival and Birmingham Coffee Festival.

From sporting events to art and exhibitions, and from food and drink events to endless family fun, there is something for everyone in Birmingham.

Rental car terminology explained

Excess reimbursement insurance

Buying essential cover means you'll be reimbursed for the excess that's held on your credit card by the car hire company when you drop off the car.

Excess insurance also usually covers other potential costs, like cleaning, towing, admin fees and misfuelling costs.

Collision damage waiver (CDW)

CDW is included with all rental cars at Birmingham. It insures the car for damage in a similar way the insurance cover you have on your personal vehicle does. CDW usually includes an excess amount which you can insure with an additional policy (See Excess reimbursement insurance). Our website also list cars that include CDW with no excess amount

Third party liability cover

Rental cars at Birmingham listed on our site always includes third party liability insurance.

Third party liability insurance provides protection in case you cause an accident. If you do, it could injure or kill others (such as your passengers, pedestrians or people in other vehicles), or damage their property (their vehicle, house or possessions, for example). Since they need to be covered, you could be responsible any claim, or treating any injuries or financially covering their loss of earnings, as well as any legal costs and court costs.

Third party liability is usually subject to an excess, which means you would have to pay the first part of any claim (normally between £750 to £3,000, varying dependent on the value of the car, the country and the deal). If you choose to cover the excess amount, you will be refunded for all of the excess you have to pay. If you decide to take out Premium Cover, the excess amount is often reduced to zero.

If you fail to do so, you might find that your rental will not be insured if you take the rental into a different country.

You can find the information relating to cross border policies by checking the Rental terms and checking the Cross Border Rules section.

If you cant find the cross border terms and conditions please get in touch with one of our car rental advisors and they'll be happy to help.

How to Hire a Car in Birmingham with Free Cancellation

All of the hire cars we offer in Birmingham include a free cancellation policy. This means that you can cancel the rental with a full refund anytime until 48 hours before picking up the vehicle.

If you've purchased our Essential Cover product to insure the car rental excess, you're able to cancel this with a refund anytime up until the booking collection time( as printed on your rental confirmation email).

We process all refunds in less than 24 hours. If you decide to cancel your booking, this means that the refund will be back in your bank account within 7 days.

How to Rent a Car in Birmingham without an Insurance Excess Held on Your Credit Card

Your hire car will already be fully covered for theft and accidents included in the hire fee you will see the website. This insurance is known as Collision Damage Waiver (CDW).

Although all of our rental cars in Birmingham include CDW in the price , there's usually an insurance excess, this excess is held on your credit card on collection. The insurance excess is the total amount you'd be liable to pay if the car is stolen, written off or severely damaged. However, the excess amount on rental cars can be expensive. It's normally between £850 to £3,000. If the car is returned damaged, or it's stolen or written off, you will have to pay up to the total amount of the excess.

When you arrive to collect the rental car, the excess is held on your card as something called a 'pre-auth' transaction. Pre Auth means that the money is not charged to your credit card as a regular transaction, it's held as a pending transaction until you drop off the car. You won't usually pay foreign currency charges on credit cards for pre authorised payments. As long as the vehicle is returned in the same condition as when it was collected, the amount is fully refunded to your card with nothing further to pay.

If you're paying by debit card, the insurance excess is taken from your bank account and fully refunded when the car is returned. If you intend to use debit card on collection, as the excess is often very high, we recommend to either buy Premium Cover when you book or to buy top up insurance at the rental desk.

This is an area of 2,100 square kilometres (800 square miles) to be discovered. Each of the counties has its own identity, so consider booking an overnight stay in the Cotswolds, as there are so many things to do and attractions to see in this region. Yet, in all of them, you will find quintessential English villages with well-preserved homes of honey-coloured stone, rolling green hills, nature of outstanding beauty, and magnificent medieval castles.

Visit the region's lively market towns such as Bourton-on-Water, also known as the Venice of the Cotswolds, because of its meandering rivers and stone bridges crossing them.

  3. Alton Towers

Alton Towers is the UK's most famous Theme Park located in Staffordshire, in the heart of the UK. It's only about an hour's drive from Birmingham. There are more than 40 rides and attractions to enjoy, from play areas for small children to thrilling rides for the bravest.

When you park your car hire in one of the park's designated car parks, you can either walk to the entrance of Theme Park or catch the monorail.

Or make a splash at the Waterpark and drift along its lazy rivers before you gather up the courage to try the heart-pounding Master Blaster water coaster.

Have an unforgettable family meal at the Rollercoaster Restaurant (the first of its kind in the UK), set below a rollercoaster track.

Finally, wrap up the experience by unwinding in the Alton Towers Spa to help you relax and feel re-energised before you head back to Birmingham.

In Ironbridge, Abraham Darby mastered the art of smelting iron ore with coke at the beginning of the 18th century, opening the door for mass-producing cast iron for the first time.

Birmingham Restaurants

It is not only the Industrial Revolution and medieval history that Birmingham is famous for. The city is known as the sweet tooth and savoury heaven too. There are more Michelin-starred restaurants in Birmingham than any other UK city outside of the capital.

From energy-boosting breakfast and brunch to elegant dining experience, Birmingham's eatery scene has something for everyone.

  1. The Lord Clifden

Whether you're after a full English breakfast, American-style pancakes, or a bowl of granola, the Lord Clifden won't disappoint you. Located in the buzzing Jewellery Quarter, this place gathers Brummies and visitors alike for beefsteak at brunch, the American, and the full English breakfast –the restaurant's staple on a brunch menu. There are also many sandwich choices, both meaty and vegetarian.

  2. The Plough

The Plough is one of the city's favourite pub-restaurants. It's located in the neighbourhood of Harborne, and it offers a variety of food and drink options, a relaxed atmosphere, and an excellent selection of wine.

Try one of the Plough's famous pizzas and delicious burgers or stop by for an excellent brunch.

  3. Maison Mayci

If you fancy French artisan bread, don't miss Maison Mayci and their excellent French cuisine. You won't be able to get enough of their toasted bread with butter and jam – is that tasty.

  4. Simpsons

Simpsons is one of the first Michelin-starred restaurants in Birmingham and one of the city's favourite destinations or fine dining.

One of the city's first Michelin-starred restaurants, Simpsons is still a shining destination for fine dining. Located in the leafy suburb of Edgbaston, the pretty garden of this grand Georgian restaurant and guest house is a draw in summer. It makes a perfect backdrop for chef Luke Tipping's seasonal menu.

  5. The Edgbaston

While in Birmingham, don't miss the opportunity to indulge in an award-winning afternoon tea at the Edgbaston, served at their cocktail lounge from noon until 6 pm. Please note that there is no car parking on the spot, so you'll need to park your Birmingham car hire in a free car parking on the main road (for up to two hours mid-week) or in a fee-paying car park opposite The Edgbaston.

  6. Praza by Pushkar

Visit Praza by Pushkar for the best Indian in the town. They went the step further, bringing the flavours of India and combine them with the local tradition of the afternoon tea, all styled with the delicate attention to detail. From a selection of Indian street food favourites to sweet treats such as gulab jamun, Praza by Pushkar's offer is unique and unforgettable.

  7. Adam's

Adam's has started as a sandwich shop in 2013, but it outgrew the original idea and developed into a fancy dining spot, receiving a Michelin star in the process. Try the Adam's tasting menu, where every delicious course offers a bit of gastronomic adventure.

Wherever you in the city, the tempting restaurants will keep popping up in front of you. From cheap eateries to expensive Michelin-starred restaurants, there is something for everyone in Birmingham when it comes to delicious food.

Having had issues with car rental in Milan Malpensa airport recently, whereby we had a ridiculously long wait and bad service. It was refreshing to use Stress Free for our most recent trip. The site was easy to use and we got the confirmation quickly. Would certainly recommend this to anyone who uses hire cars when they travel.
