Driving and parking in London

In general, the city is very busy and can get very congested making it hard to move around as quickly as you would like. However, with prior information on the issues that affect Londoners when driving in the city, you will find it easy to navigate with a rental car. Besides having information available regarding London traffic, you also need to have all your documentation in order. Some of the driving documents for foreigners that you will need while driving in London are listed below.

  • Driving license – Your license must be valid to allow you to drive within the UK. For non-UK citizens, the license must be valid at least for one year from the time you arrived in the country.
  • Passport – To hire a rental car in London, you need to present a passport or an identification document with your photo. In some cases, you may be asked for an address to your hotel or travel documents such as airline tickets.
  • Insurance - UK laws require motor vehicles to have a valid insurance certificate. The certificate is even more important when renting a car as the paperwork might be requested by traffic police when driving. If you have a driver, they need to be insured under the same agreement.
  • Driving permit (international) - The document isn't critical when driving in London especially for license holders from the US. In some cases, car rental companies may require it before handing over a vehicle to you.

Car hire collection documentation for UK residents

If you have a UK driving license, you'll need to take along a recent utility bill (in some cases for the same address as the credit card you're using to collect the car). You'll also need to provide a driving license check code when you collect the car. To obtain a check code on the DVAL website you'll need your national insurance number and your driving license number. Be sure to do this before you set off to collect the car as without it you'll be unable to collect the car.

Speed limits in London

London is a busy city that sees an incredible amount of traffic within a given day. Speed limits are displayed in miles per hour instead of kilometers like in other countries. The police often use speed cameras to enforce the limits.

In general, the speed limits in London are:

  • City roads: 30 mph
  • Open roads: 50 mph
  • Motorways: 70MPH

We recommend that you do not drink any alcohol whilst driving. It is also important to know that London drivers are expected to have a blood alcohol limit of less than 0.08%. This is similar to many cities in Europe as well as the US. To have a good time in London, consider taking a taxi after a night out to reduce the chances of getting arrested by driving your rental car. Additionally, the fines given to violators of either the speed limits or those caught driving under the influence of alcohol are high and could lead to imprisonment.

London driving charges

Congestion is a major problem in London. For this reason, London city council introduced a congestion charge which applies to vehicles driven into the city during peak hours, which are from 7 am to 6 pm. The charge is applied throughout the week except for weekends and is paid in advance at a daily rate of £11.50. Payment can be done online or through the phone for easier management of the congestion zones. Fortunately, the zones have a large "C" in white displayed within a red circle for easier identification by drivers. Also, the lack of payment will result in fines to be paid by drivers of the violating vehicles.

Check the terms and conditions of your car hire if you plan to drive within the congestion zone area. Different car rental companies have different policies in place as to how they charge for this, with some automatically adding the charge to your invoice and some requiring that you register for the charge yourself.

Besides the congestion zones, London also has the Ultra-Low Emission Zone which is targeted towards vehicles that exceed particular emission standards or they are charged. It is operational all day and night throughout the night and payment is made daily. The Low Emission Zone applies to residents of the larger part of London and targets vehicles that are considered to emit pollutants and need to meet particular emission standards. These vehicles include lorries, coaches, and minibuses which are not charged a daily rate when they stay within particular emission standards.

Parking in London

Street parking can be an impossible task with many restrictions put in place by the city from morning to evening in London. Thankfully, there are car parks in the city operated by National Car Parks (NCP) and Q-Park which offers space at reasonable costs. These parking spots can be booked earlier before driving into the city to avoid unnecessary delays.

NCP operates at least one hundred car parks within the city which also includes some at airports. If you are collecting your rental car at Heathrow Airport or one of London's other airports, you are likely to use a car park run by NCP. Alternatively, Q-Park is in charge of sixteen car parks across Central London in areas such as Harley Street, Soho, Victoria, Oxford Street, Leicester Square, Park Lane, Trafalgar Square, Knightsbridge, China Town and Queensway among others.

Parking prices in London

Parking in the streets of London have restrictions that apply throughout the week except for Sundays. Every street has its requirements which make it important to check for signs with important information before parking. When you have paid for parking for your rental car, you need to display it on the vehicle dashboard or windscreen.

In general, the costs for parking through NCP or Q-Park depend on the street or borough you plan to leave your car. Luckily, it is easy to know the exact price for your parking by checking the particular websites and typing in your preferred parking location. Also, you can choose to purchase a seasonal ticket to eliminate the need to pay daily whenever you need to park.

In case your vehicle is found to have contravened the parking restrictions in the city, you will be slapped with penalty charges. The notice is usually placed on the vehicle or you may find your rental car clamped. Vehicles whose parking is not paid in time can be charged fines of between eighty and one hundred and thirty pounds. Payment made within fourteen days attracts a discount of 50% from the original amount given on the date of issue. Vehicle owners can pay the fines in person, by phone, post, or online. If you find that you have been issued with a parking violation or speeding ticket for your car hire after you've dropped off the car, most car rental companies will charge the fine amount to your credit card along with an administration fee.

Tips for driving in London

Driving your hire car in London is a great way to learn more about the city and its unique sites. To ensure you experience fewer hiccups on the road, it is advisable to be familiar with the traffic rules in the city. Most times, they are similar to other cities in Europe but may have one or two unique to London. Some of these driving rules include:

  • Vehicles in London are expected to keep left at all times except when overtaking another car on designated roads.
  • Seatbelts for all passengers are compulsory for the driver and passengers in any vehicle. Driving without a seatbelt attracts a fine of £500. Children in cars must be strapped into a car seat for their protection.
  • Plan in advance about the route you are going to take when driving in London to avoid getting lost. If possible use a GPS device for directions but don't over-rely on it as unexpected changes may take place on the roads.
  • Mobile phones are not allowed when driving except when calling emergency service providers.

Some of the SUVs for rental in London

Mitsubishi Outlander

Mercedes GLE 4x4

Jaguar F-Pace

Mitsubishi Outlander Mercedes GLE 4x4 Jaguar F-Pace
Category: Large SUV Large SUV Large SUV
Great for: Lots of boot space and most versions can transport seven people. Lots of space in the front and back seats and a wonderful looking interior. Brilliant handling, a lot of fun to drive and a decent amount of storage space.
Not so great for: Poor fuel economy and reduced rear head space for an SUV of this size. Not as much capacity for luggage as some competitors. Adequate for 4 passengers but not great for more passengers.
Most popular rental model and options:
  • Engine size: 2L
  • Gearbox: Automatic
  • Fuel Policy: Full to full
  • Average insurance excess: £1,300
  • Average security deposit: £1,425
  • Engine size: 3L
  • Gearbox: Automatic
  • Fuel Policy: Full to full
  • Average insurance excess: £1,350
  • Average security deposit: £1,550
  • Engine size: 2L Diesel
  • Gearbox: Manual
  • Fuel Policy: Full to full
  • Average insurance excess : £1,200
  • Average security deposit : £1,550
Driving: Automatic transmission makes the Outlander easy to drive, especially if you're renting an SUV somewhere that drives on the opposite side of the road than you're used to. The non turbo charged version can feel a bit sluggish especially when compared with other SUVs of this size. Good acceleration and a good amount of pull for towing. Brilliant for long motorway journeys. Quiet in the cabin at speed on the motorway. A bit of of road noise especially in models with larger wheels. The best handling to be found in this class of SUV.
Dimensions and fuel efficiency:
  • Vehicle dimensions: 4.695m x 1.8m x 1.68m
  • Boot space: 463 litres
  • Boot space with rear seats down: 1,602 litres
  • Miles per gallon: 32-38mpg combined
  • Fuel tank size: 45-60 litres
  • Vehicle dimensions: 4.92m x 1.94m x 1.77m
  • Boot space: 490 litres
  • Boot space with rear seats down: 1,915 litres
  • Miles per gallon: 29-40mpg combined
  • Fuel tank size: 85 litres
  • Vehicle dimensions: 4.73m x 1.93m x 1.67m
  • Boot space: 650 litres
  • Boot space with rear seats down: 1,740 litres
  • Miles per gallon: 47mpg combined
  • Fuel tank size: 60 litres
Passenger space: Great space up front and a sufficient amount of room in the middle seats. The centre middle row seat suffers with reduced head room. The back two seats are suitable for children or small adults. The Mercedes GLE comes with 7 seats as standard. Lots of space in the first two rows of seats but the third row can be a little bit cramped, especially for tall passengers. Plenty of space and headroom up front, even for taller passengers. Decent space in the back for 2 passengers but cramped for 3.
Luggage capacity: More than enough space for three full size bags in the boot when the car is in 5 seat mode. The slightly high boot entrance makes loading a a bit harder than some other large SUVs Lots of storage space with the seats down (almost as much as a small van). Can easily hold up to 8 carry on sized bags in the boot with the normal seat configuration. Plenty of boot space for a couple of large suitcases, a small cabin bag and a pram. You can also fold down the rear seats.

About London

London is the capital city of the UK and is the base of government in the country. It is a financial centre and has always enjoyed a privileged location in England for many centuries. Before becoming the famous city it is now, London was ruled by Romans who founded it under the name Londinium. Its influence grew because of the presence of a major port and made it a target of attacks from Vikings and other foreign powers.

In the 9th Century, Danish Settlers took over the area and began trading which opened up lots of businesses resulting in the town becoming an urban center. The wealth of the town and the growing economic power attracted invasions from other Danish armies and the Normans. The invasion by the Normans saw the establishment of a King of England, named William Duke who built the Tower of London.

As the years went by, the ports in London became an important hub for the distribution of products across Europe. The 16th-17th century saw trade expansion that boosted the economy and consequently its population. In 1694, the Bank of England was founded and it became very successful providing financial flexibility that gave London its footing as a financial hub. The town continued to operate within the boundaries set by the Romans but later expanded due to an increased population brought on by the industrial revolution. By the 19th century, the city had become a recognized international trade center as well as a financial capital.

In response to the exponential growth in London, the County of London was created to make administration easier. The division of the county resulted in 29 electoral units which included the city and metropolitan boroughs. In 1963, new changes came into place which included the setting up of a division of London that comprised of thirty-two metropolitan boroughs and the old town. These divisions are the ones that make up the current one in London.

How to Rent a Car in London without an Insurance Excess

Renting a Car in London with no Excess Held on Your Card

The rental car will be covered for theft and accidents included in the rental price you'll see displayed on the website. This insurance is known as Collision Damage Waiver (CDW).

Although all of our rental cars in London come with collision damage waiver in the price , there's often an insurance excess, which is held on your credit card on collection. The excess is the total amount you would be required to pay if the vehicle is written off, severely damaged or stolen. However, the excess on rental cars can be expensive. It's often between £900 to £2,100. If the car is returned damaged, or it's stolen or written off, you'll be required to pay up to the total amount of the excess.

When you pick up the rental car, the excess is held on your credit card as something called a 'pre authorised' transaction. This means that the amount is not taken from your card as a regular payment, it's held as a pending payment until you drop off the car. You won't usually pay foreign currency charges on credit cards for pre authorised payments. As long as the car is dropped off in the same condition as when you collected it, the amount will be fully refunded to your credit card with nothing further to pay.

If you're paying by debit card, the excess amount is taken from your account and refunded when the vehicle is dropped off. If you plan to use debit card on collection, as the excess amount is often very high, it's recommended to buy Premium Cover on our website or to buy top up insurance at the rental desk.

To view car hire options in London with a £0 or reduced insurance excess check out our Premium Cover rental options.

Hiring a Car in London with A Fair Mileage Policy

We offer unlimited and limited mileage rental.

The total mileage allowance for the whole rental is calculated as (the number of rental days X the daily mileage allowance). You do not have to remain within the daily allowance on every day, provided that the total miles used during the rental doesn't go over the number of days X the daily allowance.

When you decide to book a limited mileage rental, we recommend checking the costs for excess mileage. These can be found in our T&Cs. You can also use the search filters on our website to display hire cars including unlimited mileage which will save you money if you're planning a longer trip
