About Orlando International Airport

Orlando international airport is the busiest airport in Florida and is in the top 10 busiest of the USA. In 2019 it serviced over 50.6 million passengers. The airport was actually a former Air Force base, and its airport code (MCO) actually comes from its former name: McCoy Air Force Base. The base began military operations in 1942 and served primarily as an auxiliary airfield until it was closed down in 1975 and turned into a fully operational public Airport in 1979. During the Cuban Missile Crisis, hundreds of military aircraft were stored here to prepare for a potential airstrike on Cuba.

The airport is very large in size at over 50 km2 making it one of the largest commercial airports in the US in terms of land area. The layout of the airport is focused around one large terminal building and four concourses. It contains 129 gates, and the main terminal is divided into two sections: A (northside) and B (southside). Both terminals have baggage claim and check-in, along with their own security checks. Afterward, you will go to one of four "airsides" to catch your flight or deboard from it. Airsides 4 and 1 handle most international arrivals. The airport itself is located a little over twenty minutes from the city of Orlando and from above you can see a series of lakes dividing the various airsides which makes the aerial views of the hub very pretty.

Generally speaking, the cheapest months to both rent a car and fly to Orlando are January and September. However, since this is an extremely popular destination, it is recommended to book your flights at least three months in advance. However, if you don't mind a colder beach trip (high of 22°C) and want to avoid the rain then you should go in January. There is an average of 4 rainy days in January, while September has an average of 11.
