  • The insurance excess - this is the amount that is held on your card in case the car is damaged or stolen. The amount varies significantly dependent on the vehicle type and location (and can be as much as £2000). This amount is usually held on your credit card as something known as a ‘pre authorisation’. This means that the money is held on your card rather than taken, so you don’t pay interest on the amount but the available balance of your credit card is reduced. However, If you book your car hire with a debit card this amount will be taken from your bank account and returned once you return the car.
  • The fuel deposit - All of the car hire we compare includes a fair full to full fuel policy. This means you’ll leave a deposit on your credit card for a full tank of fuel. When you return the car with a full tank the amount is refunded. If you choose to collect your car hire using a debit card, this amount will be taken from your bank account and refunded when you return the car.

Fuel policy (full to full vs full to empty)

The rentals on the site come with a fair full to fuel fuel policy.

You'll be required to pay a deposit for fuel on a credit card when you collect the rental. Ensure that you fill the rental up and return it full and there's nothing further to pay for fuel.

You might find full to empty fuel policies on some other sites that seem to be lower cost deals. Always check the terms and conditions for full to empty rentals as usually the admin and refuelling fees associated with full to empty fuel policies always make it much more expensive than full to full .

Car Rental excess

For rentals outside of the US and Canada there is almost always an insurance excess held on your card* - this is similar to the excess on domestic car insurance in the UK. However, the excess on rental cars is very high. It's normally between £1,000 to £2,500. If you decide not to insure the insurance excess amount you could be liable to pay for damage up to the excess amount. Check out the Premium Cover hire car options if you'd like to avoid having the excess amount blocked on your card when you collect the car.

CDW (Collision damage waiver)

It provides insurance protection for damage in a similar way the insurance you usually have on your own car does. It usually includes an excess amount which you can choose to insure with an additional policy (See Excess reimbursement insurance). We also list car hire that include CDW with no excess amount

Third party liability insurance

Third party liability insurance provides protection in case you cause an incident. If you do, it could injure or kill others (such as your passengers, pedestrians or people in other vehicles), or damage property (their vehicle, house or possessions, for example). As legally they need to be protected, you'd be responsible the cost of any damage, or treating any injuries or financially covering their loss of earnings, as well as any legal costs and any court costs.

Third party liability is subject to an excess, which means you'll need to pay the first part of any claim (normally between £750 to £1,600, depending on the value of the car, the country and the deal). When you insure the excess amount, you will be refunded for all of the excess you have to pay. Or if you take out Premium Cover, your excess amount can be reduced to zero.

Theft liability insurance (theft protection)

It insures the amount due if the hire car is stolen. Theft liability is subject to an excess , which means you would need to pay the first part of any claim (normally between £800 to £2,750, depending on the deal, the car rental company and the location.

When you insure your excess , however, you'll be refunded for any of of the excess amount you have to pay (See our essential cover). Or with Premium Cover your excess amount can be reduced to zero.

Extra driver costs

A rental contract is between the hire car company and the one individual that signs the contract and will be the main driver. This requires that you will need to ask for any other drivers to be added, this usually means an additional cost ( can be up to £12a day or even more). We often list promotions that include extra drivers are free. Always be cautious of being asked if you'd like to include a driver without being told the cost.

Essential Cover

Purchasing this policy means you'll be refunded for any of the excess that's held on your credit card by the car hire company when you drop off the car.

This insurance also usually covers other potential costs, such as towing, cleaning or admin fees, or misfuelling fees.
