Located just outside of Faro, the capital of the Algarve region of Portugal, Faro Airport (FAO) is also known as Algarve Airport. The airport opened in 1965 and before the airport's construction, there wasn't much tourism in this region of Portugal at all. FAO was an immediate success, quickly putting this region on the map due to its proximity to a number of fabulous beach resorts and pretty towns. Today, the Algarve region is one of the most popular coastal destinations in Europe, and the Airport services over 9 million people every year. In 2012, the Airports Council International awarded Faro as the "Best Improvement" in Europe.
The airport is located exactly 4 km west of Faro. It has 36 boarding gates, 60 check-in desks, over 10 car rental companies, and one runway. There are 22 stands in the airport, as well as a number of snack bars and shopping options like any other. It also has a VIP lounge, police station, medical care services, duty-free stores, and free wi-fi. In 2019 there were a total of 58,788 aircraft movements in and out of Faro.
Similar to Lisbon Airport, Faro is very close to the Atlantic, and so most flights into here head in from west via the ocean. The interior and exterior follow a tan and white color scheme with a curvy design that makes the building look very modern when compared to the boxy design of some other airports in Europe. The airport is relatively small, but the facilities are well-equipped to deal with the large passenger volume during the high season, so you don't have to worry about busy cafes or long lines going through security.
The cheapest time to fly to Faro is in February. Prices during this month are much lower because the region cools off considerably and experiences heavy rainfall during the winter months. However, it is also a time when there are no tourists there. If you book a flight during this time you will basically have the whole region to yourself and the locals. The big tourist boom happens during the summer months of June, July, August. Not only can you expect higher prices during these times, but also for the beaches and other popular sites to be more crowded. However, the weather is fantastic, with an average temperature of 26°C and only 1.2 cm of rainfall. The cheapest time to rent a car in Faro is actually November. Cars can be as cheap as €8 per day, much cheaper than the high season, July, which can climb as high as €35 per day.
Parking at Faro is divided into 7 areas. P0/P1 is "classic" parking. It is a two-minute walk from the terminal and reserved for short-term stays. P2 is "low-cost" also for a short stay and a three-minute walk from the terminal. P3 has the best price for parking but is an 8-minute walk from the terminal. It is available for the long term. P4 is where car hire companies not located in the terminal can be found. P5 is reserved for private transportation companies or large vehicles and P6 is reserved for transfer and shuttle companies that provide taxi services.

Faro: The capital of the Algarve sits on the oceans like a gem with its red-painted roofs, colorful facades, and historic architecture. Only a ten-minute drive from the airport, this lovely little town has multiple beaches, a charming historic center, and even a bone chapel lined with the bones of over 1000 monks. Unfortunately, due to its proximity to the airport, Faro is often overlooked as a legitimate tourism destination in the Algarve. However, this couldn't be a bigger mistake. Take a boat tour of the famous Parque Natural da Ria Formosa, explore the deserted beaches of Ilha Deserta, or even sip a cocktail on the lively summer beach resort of Praia de Faro. All of this and more if you include Faro in your vacation plans.
Lagos: This beautiful city was the former capital of the Algarve for a reason. It has the wind cut sandstone cliffs and beaches in between that perfectly encapsulate the spirit of the Algarve and Costa Vicentina region. And it's only one hour from the airport! You won't even notice the minutes go by because of the pure scenic beauty unfolding around you. On the drive to Lagos, you will see unparalleled expanses of the Portuguese countryside that will leave your heart hurting for months after the end of your vacation. Come here to see a number of beaches like Dona Ana and Camilo, and to hike up awesome sea cliffs, go on tours of the coast, and just to relax in the ocean breeze.
Odeceixe: This tiny town is a place in Portugal you can go for a day or for a week and no one will have heard of it. It's a little far from the airport at about an hour and a half away, but it's located in between the Algarve and Alentejo regions, and the beach here actually acts as a border between the two. The beach has a lovely stream that flows out of it and into the main area of the town. When the ocean here is too cold due to arctic currents, the stream serves as a warmer spot where you can wade to cool off from the sun. Inside the town is really pretty too, the center is very small but has a homey vibe with a few cafes and even a local game room where you can play pool, darts, or even watch a concert in the basement.
Carvoeiro: This is the definition of a resort town and the perfect place for people who want to enjoy their holiday by relaxing on the beach and not doing too much traveling. It's about 45 minutes from Faro Airport and is a great home-base for your adventures in the Algarve. It has a ton of tourist-friendly restaurants offering both local and international cuisine and even a number of attractions for families during the high time and summer months. The beach here, Praia de Carvoeiro is massive and although sometimes crowded provides really good surf with slightly warmer waters than other beaches to the west due to its proximity to the Mediterranean. If you're feeling really adventurous take a boat tour of Benagil Cave, a gigantic and natural atrium carved into the sandstone by the ocean waves.
Alvor: Although Alvor is 10 minutes farther from the airport (55 minutes away) than Carvoeiro, it is a great alternative if you are looking for a resort town with a little bit more historical value. Alvor was a former fortified town and fishing port but has matured into a lovely holiday destination. Located on the Alvor Estuary, it has a view of the protected marshlands of Ria de Alvor Nature Reserve. Praia do Alvor, the namesake beach of the town is one the largest sandy beaches in the Algarve region and is a great place to lay out your towel and just soak for the day. This town is also pretty cheap when compared to the more popular destinations in the area and its central location makes it exceptionally convenient for day trips to other parts of the Algarve.
