The excess is the amount you'd be required to pay if the car is severely damaged, written off or stolen. The excess on hire cars can be expensive. It's normally between £900 to £2,100, depending on the car, the country and the deal. If you return the car damaged, or it's stolen or written off, you will have to pay some or all of the excess.

On collection of the hire car, the excess is held on your card as a 'pre authorised' transaction. Pre Auth means that the amount isn't charged to your credit card as a normal payment, it's held as a pending transaction until you return the vehicle. You won't normally pay currency fees on credit cards for pre authorised transactions, so provided the car is dropped off in the same condition as when it was collected, this amount will be fully refunded to your card with nothing further to pay.

If you're paying by debit card, the insurance excess will be taken from your account and fully refunded when the car is dropped off. If you intend to use debit card on collection, as the excess is often high, we recommend to either buy Premium Cover on our website or to buy top up insurance at the collection desk.

Limited mileage rentals can often be a cheaper option than unlimited. When considering limited mileage rentals, the daily mileage allowance will always be clearly visibile. If you choose a rental with limited mileage, you will be liable to pay an additional fee if you exceed the daily allowance. The mileage allowance for the rental period is calculated as (the number of hire days X the daily allowance). You don't have to stay within the daily allowance on every day, provided that the total miles used during the rental does not exceed the number of days X the daily limit.

It's usually in the region of £1,200 to £2,700. If you decide not to insure the excess you could be liable to pay for any damage up to the excess . Take a look at our Premium Cover car rental options if you'd prefer not to have a large amount held on your credit card when you collect the car.

Choosing this policy means you'll be refunded for any of the excess that's held on your credit card by the car hire company .

This insurance also tends to cover other possible costs, like cleaning, towing, admin fees and misfuelling costs.

It covers the amount due if the rental car is stolen. Theft liability is subject to an excess , this means you'll be required to pay the first part of an insurance claim (usually between £1,000 to £2,500, depending on the car, the country and the deal.

When you insure your excess with us, however, you'll be reimbursed for any of of the excess you pay (See our essential cover). Or with Premium Cover the excess amount can be reduced to zero.

Extra driver costs

Car hire agreements is between the hire car company and the one individual who signs the contract and will be the main driver. This requires that you will have to ask for any other drivers to be added, this usually comes with a cost (which can be up to £11a day ). However, there are occasional promotions that include extra drivers are free. Always be cautious of being asked if you'd like to include a driver without being informed of the price.

Third party liability insurance insures in case you cause an accident. If you do, it could injure or kill other people (for instance your passengers, people in other vehicles or pedestrians), or damage their property (their vehicle, house or possessions, for example). As legally they need to be protected, you could be responsible any claim, or treating injuries or covering their loss of earnings, as well as the third party's legal fees and court fees.

Third party liability is subject to an excess, which means you would have to pay the first part of any claim (usually between £900 to £1,700, varying dependent on the car, the deal and the country). If you choose to cover the excess amount, you'll be reimbursed for all of the excess amount you have to pay. Or if you take out Premium Cover, the excess amount can be reduced to zero.

Fuel policy (full to full vs full to empty)

The rentals on the site come with a full to fuel fuel policy.

When you collect you rental you'll be asked to hold a deposit for fuel on your credit card when you collect the rental. Fill the car up and drop it off full and there will be nothing further to pay for fuel.

You might see full to empty fuel policies on some other sites that seem to be better deals. Always check the terms and conditions for full to empty rentals as the refuelling and admin charges associated with full to empty fuel policies make it much more expensive than full to full .
