At a glance
When collecting the vehicle, the lead driver must present the following:
- Valid driver's license
- Credit or UK-issued Debit card in the lead driver's name
- Proof of address 1 - credit/debit card statement
- Proof of address 2 - utility or council tax bill
- Booking confirmation email
- UK Residents: DVLA License Summary Report or Check Code (issued in past 3 weeks)
- Non-UK Residents: Passport and, for non-EU licenses, an International Drivers Permit
Dollar will verify your home address - this means that your payment card and license must be registered to your home address. If your license is not registered to the same address, you may still rent provided you also show your passport or national ID card.
Proof of address documents must be no more than 8 weeks old when you collect the vehicle.
When collecting your vehicle you will be required to leave a security deposit
on your payment card.
Security Deposit - £500 GBP
Your fuel options will be explained on collection. As a general rule you will save money choosing 'Full to Full' and filling the vehicle up yourself prior to its return.
All rentals of 28 days or less include unlimited mileage. (For rentals of 28 days or more, the limit is 2,250 miles per 28 day period). Further restrictions will also apply when taking the vehicle outside of the UK.
Fees and Taxes
All taxes are included in this rate.
Admin fees: Please also be aware that most suppliers charge administrtaion fees following damages or for processing fines. For Dollar in the UK you are charged £35 for the processing of any traffic/parking fines and £25-50 following any accidents (amount varies depending on the cost of damages).
Dollar UK are unable to rent vehicles to the following groups of people:
- Students who are less than 23 years old
- Professional entertainers
- Professional sports people including trainers and managers.
- Sufferers of some medical conditions are also prevented from hiring. If in doubt, please email firstname.lastname@example.org or contact us and we will enquire on your behalf.
Please be aware that Dollar and Thrifty are the same company in the UK and, at some locations, only the Thrifty brand may be visble on signs as you approach.
In the UK, Dollar require your credit/debit card, your booking confirmation email and a few additional forms of identification at the collection desk as detailed here.
Drivers with a UK license should present their photo license and it should be registered to your current home address. If it is registered to an old address, you will also need to show your passport or national ID card. You must have had this license for at least 1 year.
DVLA License Summary
UK drivers with 9 points or less are permitted to rent from Dollar. Previously banned drivers may only rent 5 years after the license was returned. This will be checked with a License Summary report which you can get for free online from the DVLA. Enter the necessary details and you will get to the 'View you driving licence' page. From here:
- Click on the tab named 'Get your check code'
- Click on the 'Create a Code' button.
If you have a printer you can click the link 'Print or save a driving summary' and print a copy of your Licence Summary. If you don't have a printer, just take a note of the Unique Code that was given and share this at the collection desk. You may do this up to 21 days prior to collection.
As proof of your home address you must bring a recent credit card/bank statement for the payment card you are using PLUS a utility or council tax bill. Both documents must be no more than 8 weeks old at the time of collection.
The requirements for non-UK residents are to bring your passport, credit card (debit cards not accepted), driver's license (with a International Driver's permit if not in English) and travel documents (e.g. flight tickets) confirming dates of travel.
The card you use for booking must be presented at the time of collection, be in the lead driver's name and registered to your current home address.
Only Mastercard or Visa credit card or UK issued debit cards are accepted. American Express, Cash, cheque or pre-paid credit cards are not accepted at any location.
A security deposit of £500 will be required at the time of collection. With credit cards, the security deposit is reserved on your card until you return the vehicle. For debit cards the payment is taken from your account and refunded on return but, depending on your bank, this can take 4-7 days.
Check that the card will not expire prior to your return date.
Once your paperwork has been inspected, you will be asked to sign a Rental Agreement. This is a contract between you and the car hire company and contains the terms and conditions for your rental. The agreement may include some location-specific conditions as well as setting out the limitations of any cover you have and the extra costs you may be liable for. You will be given the keys once you and any additional drivers have signed the agreement but don't rush, once you've signed you are legally bound to the terms of that document.
Cross Border Rules
You may take this vehicle to any of the following countries:
- Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Channel Islands, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Gibraltar, Hungary, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Monaco, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Republic of Ireland, Romania, San Marino, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain (excluding Ceuta and Melilla), Sweden and Switzerland
You must inform the staff at the collection desk who will charge you for to extend the breakdown cover and produce a VE103 (a document that is legally required as proof that you have permission to take the vehicle outside the UK).
Note that when travelling to other countries, a mileage restriction comes into effect. The limit is as follows:
- 1 - 6 days: 200 miles per day
- 7 days or more: 700 miles per week plus 100 miles per additional day
If you exceed these limits, you will be charged 15p per additional mile when you return the vehicle.
Should you be late for collection, Dollar UK will attempt to honor the original booking for up to 4 hours after the booked collection time provided that you inform them of the delay. You can do this by contacting your Dollar UK collection office direct or, in case of a delayed flight, if you have provided a valid flight number as part of your booking.
You should always contact your collection branch if you expect to arrive beyond normal closing time to ensure that they can remain open for you. Any collections outside normal opening hours will incur a £48 out of hours charge regardless of the reason.
Insurance and Cover
Included in the price
This product includes Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) with Theft Protection and Third Party Liability Cover. This means that you are insured for damage to or theft of the vehicle and also against any third party claims. Should there be a claim, you will be liable up to the value of the excess payment unless additional insurance is taken out.
Roadside Assistance is provided but you may be liable for the costs should you deemed to be at fault.
The standard insurance does not cover you for damage to wheels and tyres, windscreen, underside of vehicle, roof of vehicle and any damage to the interior of the vehicle. You are also not covered for towing costs should you be at fault for the breakdown.
Lastly, the standard policy does not cover you for any personal injury or loss/damage to personal possessions.
This vehicle comes with basic cover for theft or damage to the vehicle where you would be required to pay up to the full value of the excess on any insurance claims.
For both damage and theft claims the maximum excess is £1000 (inclusive of tax).
Both Stress Free and Dollar UK offer excess protection products to provide extra cover for this.
Please pay attention to the procedure for reporting an incident which will be explained in your rental agreement at the collection desk. Failing to follow this procedure could result in you being liable for the full value of the claim.
All Dollar UK rentals are sold as "Full to Full" as standard meaning the vehicle will be full when you collect and should be returned full to avoid any extra charges.
When you get to the collection desk you will be given the option to pre-purchase the tank of fuel. This would mean that the vehicle can be returned empty at no further charge but you would not be refunded for any unused fuel.
Additional drivers can be added at the collection desk. They must be at least 22 years of age but the age limit may be higher for larger vehicles. Each driver must be able to show the same documents we list as the "Driver Requirements" apart from a credit card; only the lead driver needs to show their credit card. Their license should be registered to their home address but, if it is not, a passport or national ID card must also be shown.
UK law states that all children who are both less than 135cm tall and less than 12 years old must use a child seat, Dollar offers the following choices:
- Baby seat (birth to 4 years)
- Toddler seat (9 months to 11 years
- Booster seat (4 to 11 years)
These are subject to local availability and must be requested prior to collection. The easiest way to do this is to add them to your booking on the Extras page. You can also phone your Dollar office on the number given on your confirmation email prior to arrival (especially when booking only a few days in advance).
Changes to length of rental
You may return your vehicle early - there will be no fees for this but also no refunds for unused days..
Dollar UK do not publicise a grace period for late returns and you should contact your rental office if you believe you will not be able to return the vehicle in time.
To extend your rental after collection simply phone the supplier who will grant this subject to vehicle availability. Additional days will be paid for on return.
It is free to cancel your booking at any time until 48 hours before collecting the vehicle. Once within 48 hours of collection, you will not be able to cancel your booking and any payments made cannot be refunded.
If you wish to make changes to your booking, you will most likely be required to cancel and rebook. There is no cost for cancellations. If you only wish to change your flight or phone number, you can email our customer services team on email@example.com.
Refunds after vehicle collection
The suppler may refuse collection of your vehicle for reasons such as not being fit to drive, missing required identification or not having the correc type of payment card in the lead driver's name with sufficient funds available. In the event of such a refusal, no payments made will be refunded.
The supplier does not offer credit or refunds for early returns of the vehicle.
In the event of "Delayed Charges" (fines, motorway tolls, failing to refuel, extra days, damages, loss and any associated admin charges), your Security Deposit may only be part-refunded.
Unless we indicate a "guaranteed model", vehicles are reserved by class of vehicle and not by make and model. The vehicles displayed are the commonly used models for our partners in your chosen country. If that particular vehicle is not available, the supplier will typically offer another vehicle of the same or higher class at no additional cost.
If you are travelling with disabled passengers, be sure to forward your confirmation email to firstname.lastname@example.org with any special requirements and we will forward these to the supplier for you. We can't offer any guarantees that they will be able to help but we're happy to try. If you're collecting from an airport, providing your flight number will help.
