Car Rental excess

Rental car excess
For rentals outside of the US and Canada there is usually an insurance excess held on your card* - this is similar to the excess on your own car in the UK. However, the excess on rental cars is high. It's often in the region of £1,200 to £3,000. If you decide not to insure the excess amount you will be liable to pay for any damage up to the excess amount. Take a look at our Premium Cover hire car options if you'd like to avoid having the excess amount blocked on your card when you collect the car.

Theft liability cover (theft protection)

It covers the amount due if the hire car is stolen. It is subject to an excess , which means you'll have to pay the first part of any claim (usually between £950 to £2,500, depending on the car, the country and the deal.

If you choose to insure your excess with an excess reimbursement policy, however, you'll be reimbursed for the of the excess you have to pay (See essential cover). With Premium Cover your excess amount is often reduced.
Theft liability insurance (theft protection)

CDW (Collision damage waiver)

Collision damage waiver (CDW)
CDW provides insurance protection for damage in a similar way the insurance cover you have on your own car does. CDW includes an excess which you can choose to cover with an additional policy (See Excess reimbursement insurance). We also include rental cars that include CDW with no excess amount

Third party liability insurance

Third party liability insurance provides protection in case you cause an accident. If you do, it might injure or kill other people (such as your passengers, people in other vehicles or pedestrians), or damage their property (their vehicle, house or possessions, for example). Since they need to be protected, you could be responsible any claim, or treating any injuries or covering loss of earnings, as well as any legal fees and court fees.

Third party liability is usually subject to an excess, which means you would need to pay the first part of any claim (usually between £900 to £1,600, varying dependent on the car, the deal and the country). When you insure your excess , you'll be refunded for all of the excess amount you have to pay. If you decide to take out Premium Cover, the excess is often reduced .

Fuel policy (full to full vs full to empty)

Fuel policy (full to full vs full to empty)
The hire cars on the site include a fair full to fuel fuel policy.

When you collect you rental you'll be required to pay a deposit for fuel on your credit card when you collect the hire car. Fill the rental up and drop it off full and there will be no additional fees for fuel.

You might see full to empty fuel policies on some other websites that seem to be offering better deals. Be sure to check the terms and conditions for full to empty rentals as the admin and refuelling charges included with full to empty fuel policies always make it more expensive than full to full fuel policies.

Additional driver charges

Car rental contracts is between the car hire company and the person who signs the agreement and will be the main driver. This means you will have to ask for other drivers to be added, and this usually means an additional cost ( can be up to £11a day or even more). However, there are occasional special offers where extra drivers are free. Beware of being asked if you'd like to include a driver without being told the cost.

Excess reimbursement insurance

Essential Cover
Buying this policy ensures you'll be refunded for any of the excess you have to pay to the car rental company when you drop off the car.

Excess insurance also usually covers other possible costs, such as towing, cleaning or admin fees, or misfuelling fees.

Ecovia Car Hire with Cross Border Fees Included

Ecovia Car Hire with Cross Border Fees Included

If you want to pick up your rental and take it over the border , you should always review the terms and conditions. Many car rental providers require that you let them know on collection; and will charge extra fees to top up the insurance. If you do not let them know, you might find that the rental car will not be insured when you cross over into a different country.

You'll find the details of cross border charges and fees by clicking Rental terms and viewing the Cross Border Rules section.

If you cant find the cross border information for your car hire please get in touch with one of our car rental advisors and they'll be happy to help.

Hiring a car with Ecovia without an Excess Held on Your Credit Card

The insurance excess is the total amount you'd be required to pay if the car is severely damaged, written off or stolen. However, the excess on hire cars can be high. It's often between £800 to £2,000. If the car is returned damaged, or it's stolen or written off, you will be required to pay some or all of the excess.

On collection of the vehicle, the insurance excess is held on your credit card as a 'pre-auth' transaction. This means that the money isn't charged to your card as a regular transaction, it's held as a pending transaction until you drop off the car. You don't usually pay currency charges on credit cards for pre authorised payments, so provided the rental car is returned in the same condition as when it was collected, the excess amount will be fully refunded to your credit card without anything further to pay.

If you intend to pay for your rental by debit card, the insurance excess amount will be taken from your account and refunded when the vehicle is dropped off. If you plan to use debit card on collection, as the excess can be high, we recommend to either buy Premium Cover on our website or to pay for top up cover at the rental desk.

To view rental options with a £0 or reduced excess take a look at our Premium Cover options.
