The insurance excess is the amount you would be required to pay if the car is stolen, written off or severely damaged. The excess amount on hire cars can be high. It's often between £800 to £2,100. If you return the car damaged, or it's stolen or written off, you will have to pay some or all of the excess.

When you arrive to collect the hire car, the insurance excess is held on your credit card as something called a 'pre authorised' transaction. This means that the amount isn't charged to your card as a normal transaction, it's held as a pending transaction until you return the vehicle. You don't usually pay foreign currency charges on credit cards for pre authorised transactions. As long as the car is dropped off in the same condition as when it was collected, this amount will be fully refunded to your card without anything further to pay.

If you're paying by debit card, the insurance excess will be taken from your bank account and fully refunded when the car is dropped off. If you intend to use a debit card on collection, as the excess amount can be very high, it's recommended to buy Premium Cover on our website or to pay for top up cover at the rental desk.

All the hire cars we offer include free cancellation. This means that you can cancel the booking and receive a refund anytime until 48 hours before you collect the car.

If you have purchased the Essential Cover product to cover your car rental excess, you can cancel this with a refund up until the booking start time.

We process all refunds in less than 24 hours. If you cancel your booking, the money will be in your bank account in 7 days.

You can take along your own child seats for your vehicle rental, so long as they meet the legal safety requirements for use in your car hire location.

You will also be offered the opportunity to add them to your rental when you make a booking on our website. Child seats are paid for in the local currency when collecting the rental. Although it's highly unusual for them to be unavailable, their availability is not guaranteed by most car rental companies

If you've chosen a different drop off location for your rental, the prices you'll see on the website will include all additional charges for this. How to rent a car with Firefly including Unlimited Mileage

We offer both limited and unlimited mileage rentals.

Limited mileage rentals can often be cheaper than unlimited. For limited mileage rentals, the daily mileage limit is always clearly visibile. If you choose a rental including limited mileage, you will be charged a per mile additional fee if you go above the daily mileage allowance. The total mileage allowance for the rental is calculated as (the number of hire days X the daily allowance). You don't have to remain within the daily allowance on every day, as long as the total miles used during the rental does not go over the number of days multiplied by the daily allowance.

When collecting the vehicle, the lead driver must present the following:

Mileage Policy

Limited - Be aware that FireFly in Portugal only allow travel of up to 60km per day after which you would pay around €0.37 per extra kilometre. You will be offered unlimited mileage at the collection desk for €18.45 per day. (All figures are for mainland Portugal and will be slightly less in Madeira/Azores).

Fees and Taxes

All taxes are included in this rate.

Admin fees: Please also be aware that most suppliers charge administration fees following damages or for processing fines. FireFly Portugal wil charge €30 for the processing of any traffic/parking fines (including unpaid tolls).

Vehicle Collection

Directions

Location is across the roundabout. 5mn walk from arrivals. Go to Hertz counter if necessay to collect further location details.

Driver's License

When collecting the car, the lead and any additional drivers must present their full, valid driver's license. Photocopies are not accepted.

Each driver must have had this license for at least 1 year.

For this class of vehicle, all drivers must be at least 21 years of age.

If your driver's license contains characters which are not in the Roman Alphabet, you will also require an International Driver's License.

Credit/Debit Card

When you collect your vehicle you must present a valid credit card in the lead driver's name on which a security deposit (1537.5 plus fuel and extras) will be charged.

This amount is reserved on your card until you return the vehicle.

The supplier accepts all major credit cards (Visa, AMEX, Master Card and Diners Club). Debit cards are not accepted.

The securtiy deposit will be reserved on your credit card until you return the vehicle which means the funds are not available. Purchasing additional cover at the collection desk will reduce the size of this deposit.

Rental Agreement

Once your paperwork has been inspected, you will be asked to sign a Rental Agreement. This is a contract between you and the car hire company and contains the terms and conditions for your rental. The agreement may include some location-specific conditions as well as setting out the limitations of any cover you have and the extra costs you may be liable for. You will be given the keys once you and any additional drivers have signed the agreement but don't rush, once you've signed you are legally bound to the terms of that document.

Insurance and Cover

Included in the price

This product includes Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) with Theft Protection and Third Party Liability Cover. This means that you are insured for damage to or theft of the vehicle and also against any third party claims. Should there be a claim, you will be liable up to the value of the excess payment unless additional insurance is taken out.

24 hour breakdown assistance is also included but you are not covered for towing charges where you are at fault unless you take on additional cover.

Exclusions

The basic insurance does not include cover for damage to glass/windscreens or tyres/wheels but you will be offered 'Glass & Tyres' cover at the desk. You are also not covered for towing charges should you be at fault for any breakdown.

Personal possesions, injury and medical expenses are also not covered by the basic insurance. Again, FireFly will offer you an additional product to cover this known as 'Personal Insurance'.

Insurance Excess

This vehicle comes with basic cover for theft or damage to the vehicle where you would be required to pay up to the full value of the excess on any insurance claims.

For both damage and theft claims the maximum excess is 1537.5 (inclusive of tax).

Both Stress Free and FireFly offer excess protection products to provide extra cover for this.

Please pay attention to the procedure for reporting an incident which will be explained in your rental agreement at the collection desk. Failing to follow this procedure could result in you being liable for the full value of the claim.

Fuel Options

Depending on the supplier, you will typically have two choices when it comes to paying for fuel.

  • Full to Full: This is usually the most cost effective option. The vehicle will be fuill when you collect and you must fill it up again just prior to return. If you select this policy and do not re-fill the vehicle, the supplier will charge you for the fuel you have used at a price that is often higher than would be charged at a local service station.
  • Pre-paid: This is the most convenient option. You pre-pay your tank of fuel (including a service charge) which means you collect the vehicle full and can return it empty at no extra charge. Note that you will not be refunded for fuel you do not use. Some suppliers give us the "pre-paid" rate where we include this in your price but usually we offer "Full to Full" and you would ask to pre-pay your tank at the collection desk.

Additional Drivers

Additional drivers can be added to the rental agreement when you collect your vehicle. Price is €9.22 per driver, per day to a maximum of €92 for mainland Portugal (slightly less in Madeira/Azores).

Other Extras

Child Seats - When driving in Portugal, children who are less than 12 years old or 135 cm (4 ft, 5 in) must use appropriate child restraints. The supplier provides Child, Infant and Booster Seats for €12.30 per day (max €123).

Toll Pass Device - You must pay tolls to use the Portuguese "autoestrada" (motorway) system. By renting this device for less than €2 per day, you can drive through the tolls without stopping and your rental company will bill your credit card for any tolls after you return the vehicle.

GPS units (known as "Neverlost") are charged at €18.45 per day, €92.25 per week or €184.5 per month.

We recommend requesting any extras in advance as part of your booking to help ensure availability (especially GPS). All prices are for mainland Portugal and include VAT (prices will be slightly lower in Madeira/Azores) and all extras are paid for on collection.

Changes to length of rental

Firefly typically offer a 30 minute grace period for late returns. After this time, you will be charged for a full extra day's rental and, if you do not inform your rental office of the delay, you will also be charged an additional administration penalty.

It is possible to request an extension to your rental at time of collection (subject to availability).

You may return the vehicle early but no refund will be given for the unused time.

General Terms

Cancellations
It is free to cancel your booking at any time until 48 hours before collecting the vehicle. Once within 48 hours of collection, you will not be able to cancel your booking and any payments made cannot be refunded.

Amendments
If you wish to make changes to your booking, you will most likely be required to cancel and rebook. There is no cost for cancellations. If you only wish to change your flight or phone number, you can email our customer services team on help@stressfreecarrental.com.

Refunds after vehicle collection
The suppler may refuse collection of your vehicle for reasons such as not being fit to drive, missing required identification or not having the correc type of payment card in the lead driver's name with sufficient funds available. In the event of such a refusal, no payments made will be refunded.

The supplier does not offer credit or refunds for early returns of the vehicle.

In the event of "Delayed Charges" (fines, motorway tolls, failing to refuel, extra days, damages, loss and any associated admin charges), your Security Deposit may only be part-refunded.

Vehicle Types
Unless we indicate a "guaranteed model", vehicles are reserved by class of vehicle and not by make and model. The vehicles displayed are the commonly used models for our partners in your chosen country. If that particular vehicle is not available, the supplier will typically offer another vehicle of the same or higher class at no additional cost.

Disabled Passengers
If you are travelling with disabled passengers, be sure to forward your confirmation email to help@stressfreecarrental.com with any special requirements and we will forward these to the supplier for you. We can't offer any guarantees that they will be able to help but we're happy to try. If you're collecting from an airport, providing your flight number will help.

It provides insurance protection for damage in the same way the insurance cover you usually have on your personal vehicle does. CDW usually includes an excess amount which you can choose to insure separately (See Excess reimbursement insurance). Our website also list cars on the site that include CDW with a zero excess

Extra driver fees

A rental contract is between the hire car company and the one individual who signs the contract and will be the named driver. This requires that you need to ask for any other drivers to be added, and this usually comes with a cost ( can be up to £13a day ). We often list promotions where extra drivers are free. Beware of being asked if you'd like to add a driver without being informed of the cost.

Third party liability cover
Third party liability insurance insures in case you cause an incident. If you do, it could injure or kill other people (for instance your passengers, people in other vehicles or pedestrians), or damage their property (their vehicle, house or possessions, for example). Since they need to be covered, you could be responsible any claim, or treating any injuries or financially covering their loss of earnings, as well as any legal costs and any court costs.

Third party liability is subject to an excess, this means you'll need to pay the first part of any claim (usually between £1,000 to £3,000, depending on the car, the deal and the country). If you choose to insure your excess , you will be refunded for all of the excess you have to pay. Or if you take out Premium Cover, the excess can be reduced .

Essential Cover

Purchasing excess cover means you'll be reimbursed for any of the excess you have to pay to the rental car company when you drop off the car.

This insurance also tends to cover other potential costs, such as towing, cleaning or admin fees, or misfuelling fees.

For rentals outside of the US and Canada there is almost always an excess to pay* - just like on domestic car insurance in the UK. The excess on rental cars is very high. It's normally between £1,100 to £2,700. If you decide not to insure the excess amount you will be liable to pay for damage to the car up to the value of the excess amount. Check out the Premium Cover car rental options if you'd like to avoid having the excess amount blocked on your credit card when you collect the car.

Theft liability insurance (theft protection)

It insures the amount due if the rental car is stolen. Theft liability usually includes an excess amount, which means you would be required to pay the first part of an insurance claim (usually between £950 to £1,500, depending on the deal, the car rental company and the location.

When you insure your excess , however, you'll be refunded for any of of the excess amount you pay (See essential cover). Or with Premium Cover the excess amount can be reduced.
