When collecting the vehicle, the lead driver must present the following:
- valid driver's license
- credit card in lead driver's name
- booking confirmation email
When collecting your vehicle you will be required to leave a security deposit
on your payment card.
Security Deposit - 1537.5 EUR
Your fuel options will be explained on collection. As a general rule you will save money choosing "Full to Full" and filling the vehicle up yourself prior to its return.
- Be aware that FireFly in Portugal only allow travel of up to 60km per day after which you would pay around €0.37 per extra kilometre. You will be offered unlimited mileage at the collection desk for €18.45 per day. (All figures are for mainland Portugal and will be slightly less in Madeira/Azores).
Fees and Taxes
All taxes are included in this rate.
Admin fees: Please also be aware that most suppliers charge administration fees following damages or for processing fines. FireFly Portugal wil charge €30 for the processing of any traffic/parking fines (including unpaid tolls).
Location is across the roundabout. 5mn walk from arrivals. Go to Hertz counter if necessay to collect further location details.
When collecting the car, the lead and any additional drivers must present their full, valid driver's license. Photocopies are not accepted.
Each driver must have had this license for at least 1 year.
For this class of vehicle, all drivers must be at least 21 years of age.
If your driver's license contains characters which are not in the Roman Alphabet, you will also require an International Driver's License.
When you collect your vehicle you must present a valid credit card in the lead driver's name on which a security deposit (1537.5 plus fuel and extras) will be charged.
This amount is reserved on your card until you return the vehicle.
The supplier accepts all major credit cards (Visa, AMEX, Master Card and Diners Club). Debit cards are not accepted.
The securtiy deposit will be reserved on your credit card until you return the vehicle which means the funds are not available. Purchasing additional cover at the collection desk will reduce the size of this deposit.
Once your paperwork has been inspected, you will be asked to sign a Rental Agreement. This is a contract between you and the car hire company and contains the terms and conditions for your rental. The agreement may include some location-specific conditions as well as setting out the limitations of any cover you have and the extra costs you may be liable for. You will be given the keys once you and any additional drivers have signed the agreement but don't rush, once you've signed you are legally bound to the terms of that document.
Insurance and Cover
Included in the price
This product includes Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) with Theft Protection and Third Party Liability Cover. This means that you are insured for damage to or theft of the vehicle and also against any third party claims. Should there be a claim, you will be liable up to the value of the excess payment unless additional insurance is taken out.
24 hour breakdown assistance is also included but you are not covered for towing charges where you are at fault unless you take on additional cover.
The basic insurance does not include cover for damage to glass/windscreens or tyres/wheels but you will be offered 'Glass & Tyres' cover at the desk. You are also not covered for towing charges should you be at fault for any breakdown.
Personal possesions, injury and medical expenses are also not covered by the basic insurance. Again, FireFly will offer you an additional product to cover this known as 'Personal Insurance'.
This vehicle comes with basic cover for theft or damage to the vehicle where you would be required to pay up to the full value of the excess on any insurance claims.
For both damage and theft claims the maximum excess is 1537.5 (inclusive of tax).
Both Stress Free and FireFly offer excess protection products to provide extra cover for this.
Please pay attention to the procedure for reporting an incident which will be explained in your rental agreement at the collection desk. Failing to follow this procedure could result in you being liable for the full value of the claim.
Depending on the supplier, you will typically have two choices when it comes to paying for fuel.
- Full to Full: This is usually the most cost effective option. The vehicle will be fuill when you collect and you must fill it up again just prior to return. If you select this policy and do not re-fill the vehicle, the supplier will charge you for the fuel you have used at a price that is often higher than would be charged at a local service station.
- Pre-paid: This is the most convenient option. You pre-pay your tank of fuel (including a service charge) which means you collect the vehicle full and can return it empty at no extra charge. Note that you will not be refunded for fuel you do not use. Some suppliers give us the "pre-paid" rate where we include this in your price but usually we offer "Full to Full" and you would ask to pre-pay your tank at the collection desk.

Additional drivers can be added to the rental agreement when you collect your vehicle. Price is €9.22 per driver, per day to a maximum of €92 for mainland Portugal (slightly less in Madeira/Azores).
Child Seats - When driving in Portugal, children who are less than 12 years old or 135 cm (4 ft, 5 in) must use appropriate child restraints. The supplier provides Child, Infant and Booster Seats for €12.30 per day (max €123).
Toll Pass Device - You must pay tolls to use the Portuguese "autoestrada" (motorway) system. By renting this device for less than €2 per day, you can drive through the tolls without stopping and your rental company will bill your credit card for any tolls after you return the vehicle.
GPS units (known as "Neverlost") are charged at €18.45 per day, €92.25 per week or €184.5 per month.
We recommend requesting any extras in advance as part of your booking to help ensure availability (especially GPS). All prices are for mainland Portugal and include VAT (prices will be slightly lower in Madeira/Azores) and all extras are paid for on collection.
Changes to length of rental
Firefly typically offer a 30 minute grace period for late returns. After this time, you will be charged for a full extra day's rental and, if you do not inform your rental office of the delay, you will also be charged an additional administration penalty.
It is possible to request an extension to your rental at time of collection (subject to availability).
You may return the vehicle early but no refund will be given for the unused time.
It is free to cancel your booking at any time until 48 hours before collecting the vehicle. Once within 48 hours of collection, you will not be able to cancel your booking and any payments made cannot be refunded.
If you wish to make changes to your booking, you will most likely be required to cancel and rebook. There is no cost for cancellations. If you only wish to change your flight or phone number, you can email our customer services team on firstname.lastname@example.org.
Refunds after vehicle collection
The suppler may refuse collection of your vehicle for reasons such as not being fit to drive, missing required identification or not having the correc type of payment card in the lead driver's name with sufficient funds available. In the event of such a refusal, no payments made will be refunded.
The supplier does not offer credit or refunds for early returns of the vehicle.
In the event of "Delayed Charges" (fines, motorway tolls, failing to refuel, extra days, damages, loss and any associated admin charges), your Security Deposit may only be part-refunded.
Unless we indicate a "guaranteed model", vehicles are reserved by class of vehicle and not by make and model. The vehicles displayed are the commonly used models for our partners in your chosen country. If that particular vehicle is not available, the supplier will typically offer another vehicle of the same or higher class at no additional cost.
If you are travelling with disabled passengers, be sure to forward your confirmation email to email@example.com with any special requirements and we will forward these to the supplier for you. We can't offer any guarantees that they will be able to help but we're happy to try. If you're collecting from an airport, providing your flight number will help.
