At a glance
When collecting the vehicle, the lead driver must present the following:
- Driver's license
(You must have had your license for a minimum of 2 years. If your license is not written in English, an International Drivers License is also required).
- Credit card in the lead driver's name (American Express, Diners Card, MasterCard or Visa only).
- Passport (foreign drivers only)
- Booking confirmation email (no need to print this, may be shown on your phone)
First Car Rental typically place two separate transactions on your credit card at the start of your rental:
- Payment Amount - this is an actual payment withdrawn from your account to cover your rental costs PLUS a fuel deposit PLUS any extras (like child seats) you have hired.
- Authorisation Amount - this is an amount "held" on your card (not withdrawn) to cover your potential liability (excess) in event of any damage or theft claims.
Full to full:
All vehicles will be given with a full tank of fuel and should be returned full to avoid additonal charges. First will attempt to re-fill your vehicle when you drop it off and you will be charged for any missing fuel. If the amount that is missing exceeds R25 in value, you will also be charged a R25 Fuel Admin Fee.
(In South Africa, if you'll be filling up at a regular service station, it is advisable to always have some spare cash ready to pay for fuel as credit cards are not always accepted).
First offer all vehicles with unlimited kilometres when hiring for 4 days or more
Fees and Taxes
We include all mandatory taxes and contract fees (R95) in the price shown.
Your first additional driver is included at no extra cost.
Admin fees: Please also be aware that most suppliers charge administration fees following damages or for processing fines. For First in South Africa you may be charged the following:
- Traffic Fine Admin. Fee: R325 per fine
- Claims Handling Fee (following any damage or theft): R825
- Toll Administration: R35 per rental (if electronic toll charges are incurred)
Proceed out of the Arrivals Hall and Terminal building, follow car rental signs to First Car Rental office. Look for First Car Rental signs.
When collecting the car, the lead and any additional drivers must present their full, valid driver's license. Photocopies are not accepted.
Each driver must have had their license for at least 2 years.
If your license is not written in English, you will also require an International Driver's License.
First require that the lead driver presents a credit card in their name when collecting the vehicle.
Only Visa, Mastercard, Diner's or AMEX credit cards will be accepted. You may not use a debit card.
Please ensure that the card has enough funds to pay the rental cost and security deposit. The card should not expire until after the vehicle is returned and that it has been cleared by your bank for use in Africa.
The Rental Costs will be withdrawn from your account and there will also be a separate hold placed for the "Autorisation Amount" (which is like a security deposit for any damage/theft claims).
Once your paperwork has been inspected, you will be asked to sign a Rental Agreement. This is a contract between you and the car hire company and contains the terms and conditions for your rental. The agreement may include some location-specific conditions as well as setting out the limitations of any cover you have and the extra costs you may be liable for. You will be given the keys once you and any additional drivers have signed the agreement but don't rush, once you've signed you are legally bound to the terms of that document.
Cross Border Rules
To take your vehicle out of South Africa, you must ask for a Letter of Authorisation at the collection desk. This document will be needed at the border crossing as evidence that First have given you permission to take the vehicle out of the country. The countries to which you can travel (and the cost for each) are listed here:
- Botswana (R2000); Lesotho (R1500); Swaziland (R1300); Namibia (R2000)
Please be aware that unless you take out the Executive Waiver, you would pay double the normal excess if the vehicle is stolen outside of South Africa.
Note - Restricted Nationalities: First do not allow cross border travel for drivers with a license or passport from any of the following countires - Angola, Botswana, DRC, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe.
First ask that you contact your rental office if you believe you will be late for collection so that your booking is not cancelled. If you have provided a flight number as part of your booking and your flight is delayed, the rental office will allow one hour after the flight lands for you to reach the collection desk (they would also keep the office open for delayed flights landing after normal closing time).
Insurance and Cover
Included in the price
This product includes Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) with Theft Protection and Third Party Liability Cover. This means that you are insured for damage to or theft of the vehicle and also against any third party claims.
Should there be a claim, you will be liable up to the full value of the excess amount unless additional insurance is taken out.
The standard damage and theft waivers do not cover you for damage to the wheels, tyres, glass, underside of the vehicle or for any damage caused by water or hail. If there was an incident you would be liable for up the the full value of the excess amount plus accident administration fees and any towing charges.
Please take extra care in South Africa as it is common for vehicles not to be insured for incidents where no other vehicle, animal or object was involved or when travelling on "unsuitable" road surfaces.
This vehicle comes with basic cover for theft or damage to the vehicle. Should there be any damage, you will be liable for up to R7500 (inclusive of taxes). If you would like to remove this risk, look to add premium cover (known as "Executive Waiver") as part of your booking.
Please pay attention to the procedure for reporting an incident which will be explained in your rental agreement at the collection desk. Failing to follow this procedure could result in you being liable for the full value of the claim.
In South Africa, virtually all rental companies offer the simple "Full to Full" fuel policy. Your vehicle will be given with a full tank and they will attempt to fill it up again when you return. If they can put more than a small amount of fuel in the car, you'd be charged for missing fuel plus a service charge. Unlike other countries however, the service charge is usually very small (e.g. R50) so many people
Your rate with First includes one additional driver for free. You may add more drivers at the collection desk if required.
As with the lead driver, each additional driver must have had their license for at least 2 years. Each additional driver will need to present their license and passport at the collection desk. The price for any extra additional drivers is R410 per driver.
For those with young children, please be aware of the child seat laws in South Africa. The law is quite basic and states that all children aged less than 3 must be in a child seat and, for those aged less than 1 or weighing less than 9kg, the seat must be rear-facing. Beyond that it is up to you but South African roads can be quite dangerous so we still advise child seats for older children as well.
First offer three types of child seat - Infant Seat (0-10kg); Toddler Seat (10-18kg) and Child Seats (18kg+). Most locations also GPS devices. Fire extinguishers (required if you are travelling outside the RSA to some countries) may also be available but usually by special request only.
You should add any extra to your booking if possible or otherwise contact your rental office prior to arrival to ensure they have availability
Changes to length of rental
On returning the vehicle you will have a 1 hour grace period for late returns before you will be charged for a whole additional day's rental. Make sure to contact your return office if you may be arriving after closing time.
If you decide to return the vehicle much earlier than the booked return date and time, there will be no extra charge for this but nor will you be refunded for any unused days.
If you wish to extend your rental after you have collected the vehicle, you can simply phone your drop-off office and make the arrangement (subject to vehicle availability). The rate for your extra days will be slightly higher than normal./p>
It is free to cancel your booking at any time until 48 hours before collecting the vehicle. Once within 48 hours of collection, you will not be able to cancel your booking and any payments made cannot be refunded.
If you wish to make changes to your booking, you will most likely be required to cancel and rebook. There is no cost for cancellations. If you only wish to change your flight or phone number, you can email our customer services team on email@example.com.
Refunds after vehicle collection
The suppler may refuse collection of your vehicle for reasons such as not being fit to drive, missing required identification or not having the correc type of payment card in the lead driver's name with sufficient funds available. In the event of such a refusal, no payments made will be refunded.
The supplier does not offer credit or refunds for early returns of the vehicle.
In the event of "Delayed Charges" (fines, motorway tolls, failing to refuel, extra days, damages, loss and any associated admin charges), your Security Deposit may only be part-refunded.
Unless we indicate a "guaranteed model", vehicles are reserved by class of vehicle and not by make and model. The vehicles displayed are the commonly used models for our partners in your chosen country. If that particular vehicle is not available, the supplier will typically offer another vehicle of the same or higher class at no additional cost.
If you are travelling with disabled passengers, be sure to forward your confirmation email to firstname.lastname@example.org with any special requirements and we will forward these to the supplier for you. We can't offer any guarantees that they will be able to help but we're happy to try. If you're collecting from an airport, providing your flight number will help.
The Rental Terms displayed on stressfreecarrental.com are a summary of the rental company's own terms and conditions. We take every care to present the important details from these legal documents in a way that is easier for our customers to understand but, in so doing, some of the finer details may have been omitted. The rental company's terms are also subject to change; all efforts are made to keep our information up to date but there will inevitably be a small delay before we can do so. The full terms and conditions will be supplied as part of your Rental Agreement that you will receive and must sign before your rental can begin. If any customer would like to read the full terms and conditions prior to collecting their vehicle, please contact our customer support team.
