Car Hire and Cross Border Fees

If you plan to pick up your rental and take it over the border , be sure to review the terms and conditions. Many car rental brands insist that you inform them on collection; and usually charge additional fees to top up your insurance. If you do not let them know, you might find that your rental will not be insured when you cross over into a different country.

You can find the details of cross border charges and fees by checking the Rental terms and checking the Cross Border Rules section.

If you're struggling to find the cross border information for your car hire please get in touch with one of our car rental advisors and they'll be happy to help.

How to Rent a Car with Unlimited Mileage

Our website offers limited and unlimited mileage rentals.

Limited mileage rentals can often be a cheaper option than unlimited. For limited mileage rentals, the daily mileage limit will always be clearly displayed. If you choose a rental including limited mileage, you will be charged a per mile additional fee if you go above the daily mileage allowance. The mileage allowance for the rental period is calculated as (the number of hire days multiplied by the daily allowance). You do not have to remain within the daily limit on every day, provided that the total miles used during the rental does not go over the number of days multiplied by the daily allowance.

If you opt for a limited mileage car hire, it's receommended to check the charges for excess mileage. You can find these in our term and conditions section. It's also possible to use the filters on our website to display car hire including unlimited mileage which can save money if you're planning a longer trip

Hiring a Car with a Low Security Deposit

When you collect the car, you will usually be required to leave a security deposit on a credit card or debit card. Security deposits can vary significantly dependent on the make and model of the vehicle and the insurance excess amount. Car rental Security deposits can vary between £0 and £2,000.

We compare all of the car hire options with a low security deposit and in some instances no deposit at all except for fuel. If you choose to reserve a rental with Premium Cover included, you're often able to reduce your deposit to cover only fuel (often less than £100), this is refunded to your card when the car is dropped off with a full tank.

Car Hire with no Insurance Excess Held on Your Card

How to Rent a Car without an Insurance Excess Held on Your Credit Card

The insurance excess is the total amount you would be required to pay if the vehicle is stolen, written off or severely damaged. However, the excess on rental cars can be high. It's normally between £800 to £2,000, depending on the car, the country and the deal. If you return the car damaged, or it's stolen or written off, you will have to pay up to the total amount of the excess.

When you arrive to collect the car, the excess is held on your credit card as something called a 'pre-auth' transaction. This means that the money isn't charged to your credit card as a normal payment, it's held as a pending transaction until you return the car. You don't usually have to pay currency charges on credit cards for pre authorised transactions, so provided the rental car is dropped off in the same condition as when you collected it, this excess amount is fully refunded to your credit card with nothing further to pay.

If you plan to pay by debit card, the excess amount will be taken from your account and refunded when the car is returned. If you intend to use a debit card on collection, as the excess is often high, it's recommended to buy Premium Cover when you book or to pay for top up insurance at the collection desk.

To view car hire options with a £0 or reduced insurance excess take a look at our Premium Cover rental options.

Car hire terms explained

Theft liability cover (theft protection)

Theft liability cover (theft protection)
It covers the amount due if the rental car is stolen. It is subject to an excess amount, which means you'll have to pay the first part of any claim (usually between £900 to £2,750, depending on the car, the country and the deal.

When you insure your excess with an excess reimbursement policy, however, you will be reimbursed for the of the excess you pay (See our essential cover). With Premium Cover your excess amount is often reduced to zero.

Third party liability cover

Third party liability insurance insures in case you cause an accident. If you do, it might injure or kill others (such as your passengers, pedestrians or people in other vehicles), or damage their property (their vehicle, house or possessions, for example). Since they need to be covered, you could be responsible the cost of any damage, or treating any injuries or covering loss of earnings, as well as any legal costs and any court costs.

Third party liability is subject to an excess, this means you'll need to pay the first part of any claim (normally between £750 to £3,000, varying dependent on the value of the car, the deal and the country). When you cover your excess amount, you'll be reimbursed for all of the excess you have to pay. If you decide to take out Premium Cover, the excess amount is often reduced .
Third party liability cover

Extra driver fees

Extra driver fees
Car hire agreements is between the car hire company and the one person that signs the agreement and will be the named driver. This requires that you will have to ask for other drivers to be added, this usually comes with a cost ( can be up to £13a day ). However, there are occasional special offers that include extra drivers are free. Always be cautious of being asked if you'd like to add a driver without being told the price.

Fuel policy (full to full vs full to empty)

The hire cars on the site always come with a fair full to fuel fuel policy.

You'll be required to pay a deposit for fuel on a credit card when you collect the hire car. Ensure that you fill the car up and drop it off full and there will be no additional fees for fuel.

You will see full to empty policies on other websites that seem to be better deals. Always check the small print for full to empty rentals as the admin and refuelling charges associated with full to empty fuel policies always make it much more expensive than full to full .
Fuel policy (full to full vs full to empty)

CDW (Collision damage waiver)

Collision damage waiver (CDW)
CDW covers the car for accident damage in a similar way the insurance cover you have on your personal vehicle does. CDW includes an excess amount which you can insure separately (See Excess reimbursement insurance). We also list cars on the site that include CDW with a zero excess

Excess Insurance

Buying this policy means you'll be reimbursed for any of the excess that's held on your credit card by the hire car company when you drop off the car.

Excess reimbursement insurance also tends to cover other possible costs, such as towing, cleaning or admin fees, or misfuelling fees.
Excess reimbursement insurance

Hire car excess

Car Rental excess
For rentals outside of the US and Canada there is almost always an excess held on your card* - this is similar to the excess on your own car in the UK. The excess on hire cars is very high. It's usually in the region of £1,000 to £3,000. If you fail to cover the insurance excess amount you will be liable to pay for damage to the car up to the value of the excess . Take a look at our Premium Cover rental car options if you'd like to avoid having the excess amount blocked on your card .

Why Stress Free Car Rental is different

There's a huge amount of reasons why we are different from our competitors but to start, it's important to recognise that Stress Free Car Rental exists because of our own frustration with the process of hiring a car.

Our website collects and compares millions of prices at 1000s of car hire locations to find you the best offers and make booking them on our website as fast, simple, simple, fast and Stress Free as it should be

Stress Free Car Rental do not work with just any car rental firms. We're careful to only work with brands you can trust.

We don't like to be be beaten on price. Our price match promise means if you find the same hire vehicle at a lower cost, we'll match it.

Brands we list on the website include the larger car hire companies like Enterprise and Hertz there are some companies we know will not give you the experience or price that you deserve - so we don't list these on our website.

Pricing includes additional fees that other car hire websites don't usually display - this makes sure that your experience is as transparent as possible.

Car rental excess, security deposits and insurance

We understand how daunting and frightening picking a hire car insurance product can be. The additional fees that make up the price of hiring a car can be very confusing, these can include:

  • The cost of hiring the vehicle
  • Any extras (e.g. child car seats & sat nav)
  • Insurance costs

Many hire car websites hide the expensive insurance excess and security deposit costs in the small print. Customers are then shocked when the cash is taken from the debit card account or the amount is held on their credit card. We think this is unfair and can really obstruct your holiday plans which is why we work differently at Stress Free Car Rental.

On our website you'll find three options for car hire excess cover, premium, essential and basic and we help you find the hire car that suits you and your trip. You're able to view the details of these on the extras page of our website when making a booking.

Collecting your Car rental with a debit card and other payment options.

You can use a American Express, Visa or a Mastercard credit card or a debit card issued by a bank or credit card company when renting a car on our website.

Would you like us to take payment using something other than debit card and credit card? Please get in touch to let us know. We're always open to ideas about how we can enhance the service we offer and make paying for your car hire as Stress Free as it can be.

If you choose Essential or Basic Cover for your rental, it usually means that you'll need a credit card in the name of the lead driver on collection of the car. You will more often than not be given the option to purchase a top up policy by the hire partner at the collection desk, this then enables you to use a debit card in the name of the lead driver.

Very often, car rentals that include the Premium Cover option will allow you to use a debit card when you pick up the car with no additional charges. You can compare if a debit card is allowed, along with all of the different car rental excess and insurance alternatives on the second step of the website booking process.

It's worth bearing in mind that often car rental companies that will allow debit card on collection are more costly than those that accept credit card only.

It's important to consider when deciding if you'd like to use a debit card when collecting your car, car hire companies often hold an insurance excess on the lead drivers credit card, the hold is often a significant amount of money and if you opt to pay with debit card this will be debited from your bank account and not refunded until a couple of weeks following completion of your rental contract.

Many of the car hire companies we work with accept a debit card when you collect the rental; but often these do have different T&Cs associated with them. Be careful to understand the contract terms if you intend to use a debit card at the desk when collecting the car.
