How to Rent a Car with Child Seats

You're allowed to use your own child seats and booster seats for your car rental, so long as they meet all of the legal safety requirements for use in your car hire location.

You'll also be offered the option to include them with your car rental when making a booking on the website. Child seats and booster seats are paid for in local currency when picking up the car.

How to Hire a Car with Unlimited Mileage

Our website offers both limited and unlimited mileage rentals.

Limited mileage rentals can often be less expensive than unlimited. For limited mileage rentals, the mileage allowance is always clearly visibile. If you choose a rental with limited mileage, you'll be charged a per mile additional fee if you go above the daily allowance. The mileage allowance for the whole rental duration is calculated as (the number of hire days multiplied by the daily allowance). You do not have to remain within the daily limit on every day, provided that the total miles used during the rental doesn't go over the number of days multiplied by the daily allowance.

When you decide to book a limited mileage car hire, it's receommended to check the charges for excess mileage. You'll find these in our term and conditions. How to hire a car without a credit card

You can pay for your car hire on our website using any credit or debit card, including Visa, Mastercard or American Express. We also compare car hire deals at 1000s of locations that accept a debit card on collection. You can quickly and easily find these by using the filters on the search results page or taking a look at our Premium Cover options on the extras page.

Car Hire with a Reduced Security Deposit

At the collection desk, you'll be required to leave a security deposit on your credit card or debit card. The security deposit vary significantly dependent on the size of the vehicle and the insurance excess . Car rental Security deposits can range between £0 and £2,500.

We compare all of the car hire options with a low security deposit and in some instances no deposit at all except for fuel. When you choose to reserve a rental with Premium Cover included, you can reduce your deposit to cover only fuel (usually less than £100), which is fully refunded to your card when the vehicle is returned with a full tank.

Hiring a Car with Free Cancellation

All the car rentals we offer include free cancellation. Free Cancellation means that you can cancel the rental with a refund anytime until 48 hours before picking up the car.

If you've purchased our Essential Cover product to insure the car hire excess, you're able to cancel this and receive a refund up until the rental start time( as printed on your rental confirmation email).

All refunds are processed by us in less than 24 hours. If you have to cancel the rental, the money will be in your account in 7 days.

Renting a Car with One Way Fees included

Many of the car rental providers we work with permit you to pick up the car in one location and return the vehicle at a different location. If you've chosen a different drop off location for the rental, the prices you'll see displayed on our website will include any extra charges for this. You will also see a full breakdown of all additional fees on the payment page.

How to Rent a Car without an Insurance Excess

The excess is the amount you'd be liable to pay if the vehicle is stolen, written off or severely damaged. However, the excess on hire cars can be very expensive. It's often between £900 to £2,100, depending on the car, the country and the deal. If the car is returned damaged, or it's stolen or written off, you'll be required to pay some or all of the excess.

On collection of the vehicle, the excess is held on your credit card as a 'pre authorised' transaction. Pre Auth means that the amount is not charged to your card as a regular payment, it's held as a pending transaction until you drop off the car. You won't usually pay currency fees on credit cards for pre authorised transactions. As long as the car is returned in the same condition as when you collected it, the excess amount is fully refunded to your credit card without anything additional to pay.

If you plan to pay by debit card, the insurance excess amount will be taken from your bank account and fully refunded when the vehicle is returned. If you plan to use a debit card on collection, as the excess is often very high, we recommend to either buy Premium Cover on our website or to buy top up insurance at the rental desk.

What's the best fuel policy for car rental?

All of our rentals include a full to full fuel policy. You'll collect the car with a full tank of fuel and be asked to leave a small deposit for fuel when you collect the car. The deposit is refunded when you return the car with a full tank.

What do I need when I collect the car?

To collect your car the lead driver should present a Valid driver's license, Passport or National Identity Card, Credit or debit card in the lead driver's name, Home and local (hotel, villa etc) address and a Booking confirmation email. Any other requirements at collection will be clearly explained in your booking confirmation email.

Are there any hidden charges in your prices for car rental?

Essential cover will appear as an optional extra in the car hire insurance options. For some geographical/partner car rental combinations the cover isn't always available.

Stress Free Car Rental's Premium cover

Premium cover is the highest option for car hire insurance we provide.

You're able to buy Premium Cover bundled with your car rental, so that you understand the full price of everything before starting your trip.

Choosing Premium Insurance is optional, you can also decide to purchase Premium Cover at the collection desk, it's often cheaper to book this in advance on our website at the same time as you make your car hire booking.

Many of our customers choose the Premium Cover option when renting a vehicle because it usually brings the excess down to zero meaning that the customer has no large security deposit or car hire insurance excess risk. Car hire terms explained

Theft liability cover (theft protection)

It covers the amount due if the rental car is stolen. It is subject to an excess , this means you'll be required to pay the first part of any claim (normally between £900 to £2,750, depending on the deal, the car rental company and the location.

When you insure your excess , however, you will be refunded for the of the excess amount you pay (See essential cover). With Premium Cover the excess is often reduced.

Third party liability cover

Third party liability insurance provides protection in case you cause an incident. If you do, it could kill or injure other people (for instance your passengers, pedestrians or people in other vehicles), or damage their property (their vehicle, house or possessions, for example). Since they need to be covered, you'd be responsible the cost of any damage, or treating injuries or financially covering their loss of earnings, as well as the third party's legal fees and court fees.

Third party liability is subject to an excess, which means you would have to pay the first part of any claim (usually between £750 to £1,600, varying dependent on the car, the country and the deal). If you choose to insure the excess , you will be reimbursed for any or all of the excess you have to pay. If you decide to take out Premium Cover, the excess can be reduced .

Extra driver costs

A car hire agreement is between the car hire company and the individual who signs the agreement and will be the named driver. This requires that you need to ask for other drivers to be added, and this usually means an additional cost (which can be up to £11a day or even more). We often list special offers where extra drivers are free. Always be cautious of being asked if you'd like to include a driver without being told the price.

Fuel policy (full to full vs full to empty)

The hire cars on our site always come with a fair full to fuel fuel policy.

When you collect you rental you'll be required to hold a small deposit for fuel on your credit card when you collect the rental. Ensure that you fill the car up and drop it off full and there will be nothing further to pay for fuel.

You might see full to empty fuel policies on some other websites that seem to be lower cost deals. Be sure to check the terms and conditions for full to empty rentals as the refuelling and admin costs associated with full to empty fuel policies make it much more expensive than full to full .

CDW (Collision damage waiver)

CDW insures the car for damage in the same way the insurance cover you have on your own vehicle does. CDW includes an excess amount which you can choose to insure with an additional policy (See Excess reimbursement insurance). We also include rental cars that include CDW with a zero excess

Excess reimbursement insurance

Choosing essential cover means you'll be reimbursed for the excess that's held on your credit card by the rental car company .

Excess reimbursement insurance also usually covers other potential costs, like cleaning, towing, admin fees and misfuelling fees.

Rental car excess

For rentals outside of the US and Canada there is almost always an excess held on your card* - just like on your own car in the UK. However, the excess on hire cars can be very high. It's usually between £1,200 to £3,000. If you decide not to cover the excess amount you could be liable to pay for any damage up to the value of the excess . Check out our Premium Cover car rental options if you'd prefer not to have a large amount blocked on your credit card when you pick up the car.

If you choose Essential or Basic Cover for your rental, it usually means that you'll need a credit card in the name of the lead driver on collection of the car. You will more often than not be given the option to purchase a top up policy by the hire partner at the collection desk, this then enables you to use a debit card in the name of the lead driver.

Very often, car rentals that include the Premium Cover option will allow you to use a debit card when you pick up the car with no additional charges. You can compare if a debit card is allowed, along with all of the different car rental excess and insurance alternatives on the second step of the website booking process.

It's worth bearing in mind that often car rental companies that will allow debit card on collection are more costly than those that accept credit card only.

It's important to consider when deciding if you'd like to use a debit card when collecting your car, car hire companies often hold an insurance excess on the lead drivers credit card, the hold is often a significant amount of money and if you opt to pay with debit card this will be debited from your bank account and not refunded until a couple of weeks following completion of your rental contract.

Many of the car hire companies we work with accept a debit card when you collect the rental; but often these do have different T&Cs associated with them. Be careful to understand the contract terms if you intend to use a debit card at the desk when collecting the car.
