At a glance
When collecting the vehicle, the lead driver must present the following:
- Valid driver's license (If your license contains any non-Latin characters, an International Driver's Permit is also required).
- Passport or National Identity Card
- Credit card in the lead driver's name
- Booking confirmation email (you may show this on your phone)
When collecting your vehicle you will be required to leave a security deposit
on your payment card. With most car rental companies, the deposit will be of equal value to your excess - €1181
EUR (approx. £1062).
Note – Releasing your deposit
If you have activated the Via Verde toll device on your car, be aware that the "hold" on your credit card will not be cancelled until a few days after you have returned your vehicle. This is to give Guurin enough time to process any toll charges you may have incurred.
All Guerin vehicles are supplied on a "Full to Full" fuel policy which means the vehicle will be given with a full tank of fuel and should be returned full to avoid additonal charges.
All Guerin vehicles come with unlimited mileage.
Fees and Taxes
Local fees and taxes are included in this price.
Guerin charge a €24.60 administration fee for the processing of any fines or a €61.50 fee for following any damages.
In Terminal: The collection desk is located within the airport terminal building. Follow the signs after passport control and baggage collection
When collecting the car, the lead and any additional drivers must present their full, valid driver's license. Photocopies are not accepted.
Each driver must have had their license for at least 1 year. For this class of vehicle, all driver's must be at least 25 years of age.
If your driver's license contains characters which are not in the Roman Alphabet, you will also require an International Driver's License.
You must present a valid credit card in the lead driver's name when you collect the vehicle. All major credit card types are accepted (including Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Diner's Club). Only one credit card may be used per rental. Check that the card will not expire within 30 days of your collection date.
Debit cards and cash may only be used to pay the final bill when the vehicle is returned.
Once your paperwork has been inspected, you will be asked to sign a Rental Agreement. This is a contract between you and the car hire company and contains the terms and conditions for your rental. The agreement may include some location-specific conditions as well as setting out the limitations of any cover you have and the extra costs you may be liable for. You will be given the keys once you and any additional drivers have signed the agreement but don't rush, once you've signed you are legally bound to the terms of that document.
Cross Border Rules
Guerin allow travel outside Portugal to all countries in the European Community (and Switzerland) but you must purchase the Cross Border product at the collection desk. The cost for this is €73.80 per rental. You may not travel to any Eastern European country apart from Slovenia and Slovakia and travel by ferry is also not allowed.
We recommend that you always contact your collection office if you will be arriving late, especially if you will be more than 30 minutes late or arriving after closing time. For delayed flights where you have prvided the flight number, Guerin will hold you car for you but will not stay open for more than 1 hour after normal closing time.. If a branch does agree to remain open after normal closing time for you, you wil be charged an extra €44.60 Out Of Hours fee.
Insurance and Cover
Included in the price
This product includes Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) with Theft Protection and Third Party Liability Cover. This means that you are insured for damage to or theft of the vehicle and also against any third party claims.
Guerin's breakdown cover protects you 24x7 in case of break down or accident. This service provides breakdown service or towing of the rented vehicle and or transportation of the passengers to the nearest Guerin rental service centre.
Even if you choose to included Guerin's extra cover (known as "Super CDW"), you are not covered for acts of vandalism or damage to the roof & underside of vehicle (unless in a collision). Cover is also void when damage caused through misuse or failure to comply with the road code.
Unless you choose to upgrade to Guerin's "Super CDW" cover you will also not be covered for damage to wheels & tyres. Glass is only covered if you also purchase the "Additional CDW" product at the collection desk.
The standard theft protection covers the vehicle and any of its components but is only valid if you report the theft to the local authorities and you still have the vehicle's keys.
This vehicle comes with basic cover for theft or damage to the vehicle.
Should there be any damage or theft of the vehicle you will be liable for up to €1181 (inclusive of taxes).
If you would like to reduce the risk of any large payouts, you can select a vehicle that includes Guerins premium cover product (which they call "Super CDW") to reduce your excess to zero.
Please pay attention to the procedure for reporting an incident which will be explained in your rental agreement at the collection desk. Failing to follow this procedure could result in you being liable for the full value of the claim.
Depending on the supplier, you will typically have two choices when it comes to paying for fuel.
- Full to Full: This is usually the most cost effective option. The vehicle will be fuill when you collect and you must fill it up again just prior to return. If you select this policy and do not re-fill the vehicle, the supplier will charge you for the fuel you have used at a price that is often higher than would be charged at a local service station.
- Pre-paid: This is the most convenient option. You pre-pay your tank of fuel (including a service charge) which means you collect the vehicle full and can return it empty at no extra charge. Note that you will not be refunded for fuel you do not use. Some suppliers give us the "pre-paid" rate where we include this in your price but usually we offer "Full to Full" and you would ask to pre-pay your tank at the collection desk.

There is no need to pre-book additional drivers as they can be added at the collection desk. Each additional driver will need to show their Driver's License and Passport.
The cost per additional driver is €5 per day except for young drivers (less than 21) who would pay €7.70pd. In either case you only pay a maximum of 10 days charge (€50 / €77).
When driving in Portugal, children under 12 years of age and less than 135 cm in height must use an approved child seat which must be secured in the back seat of the vehicle unless the child is less than 3 years old. Guerin provide both Infant, Child and Booster seats and recommend that they be included in your reservation to ensure availability.
"Via Verde": Toll roads are common on Portuguese highways, many do not have payment booths and the means of payment are problematic for tourists. We recommend that you ask at the collection desk for the "Via Verde" device to be activated which will allow you to pass straight through the tolls and your credit card will be billed automatically. This will cost you less than €2 per day (max charge of €18.50).
GPS and Mobile Data (wifi) systems are only available from selected airport locations and should be requested in advance to ensure availability.
At the collection desk you may also be offered a "Pack Hours" extra which basically gives you an extra hour's breathing room at the end of your rental for late returns.
Changes to length of rental
If you are late to collect your car, Guerin will hold you car for you for X hour after which your bookng may be cancelled. You can avoid this by contacting them or, for airports, by providing a valid flight number.
Any collections or returns outside normal opening hours will incur an extra charge of €44.60.
On returning the vehicle you will have 59 minutes grace period for late returns before you will be charged for a whole, additional day's rental at higher than normal rate. You can purchase a "Pack Hours" extra at the collection desk to extend this by an hour. Vehicles may be returned early - there is no extra charge for this but nor will you be refunded for any unused days.
If you wish to extend your rental after you have collected the vehicle, you will have to return to a Guerin office to sign a new rental agreement.
It is free to cancel your booking at any time until 48 hours before collecting the vehicle. Once within 48 hours of collection, you will not be able to cancel your booking and any payments made cannot be refunded.
If you wish to make changes to your booking, you will most likely be required to cancel and rebook. There is no cost for cancellations. If you only wish to change your flight or phone number, you can email our customer services team on firstname.lastname@example.org.
Refunds after vehicle collection
The suppler may refuse collection of your vehicle for reasons such as not being fit to drive, missing required identification or not having the correc type of payment card in the lead driver's name with sufficient funds available. In the event of such a refusal, no payments made will be refunded.
The supplier does not offer credit or refunds for early returns of the vehicle.
In the event of "Delayed Charges" (fines, motorway tolls, failing to refuel, extra days, damages, loss and any associated admin charges), your Security Deposit may only be part-refunded.
Unless we indicate a "guaranteed model", vehicles are reserved by class of vehicle and not by make and model. The vehicles displayed are the commonly used models for our partners in your chosen country. If that particular vehicle is not available, the supplier will typically offer another vehicle of the same or higher class at no additional cost.
If you are travelling with disabled passengers, be sure to forward your confirmation email to email@example.com with any special requirements and we will forward these to the supplier for you. We can't offer any guarantees that they will be able to help but we're happy to try. If you're collecting from an airport, providing your flight number will help.
