JUCY began trading in New Zealand in 2001 and quickly became best known for their campervan hire which they custom build to a variety of specifications in New Zealand and are now also available in Australia. Regular car hire remains their core business with a focus on more basic vehicles provided at low prices.

The car hire business is part of the wider "JUCY World" business which, as well as campervans, also has hotel and cruise businesses.

JUCY are a great choice for customers who are exploring Australia and New Zealand with a range of travel guides, suggestions and deals available. Customers who don't need the newest vehicles and prefer the lower prices are also big fans of the brand.

Hire car terminology

Insurance excess

Car Rental excess
For rentals outside of the US and Canada there's usually an excess held on your card* - just like on domestic car insurance in the UK. The excess on rental cars is very high. It's normally between £1,000 to £2,500. If you decide not to cover the excess amount you could be liable to pay for any damage to the car up to the excess amount. Take a look at the Premium Cover rental car options if you'd like to avoid having the excess amount blocked on your card .

Collision damage waiver (CDW)

It provides insurance protection for damage in a similar way the insurance cover you have on your own car does. It usually includes an excess which you can insure with an additional policy (See Excess reimbursement insurance). Our website also include cars on the site that include CDW with a zero excess

Fuel policy (full to full vs full to empty)

Fuel policy (full to full vs full to empty)
The hire cars on our site come with a full to fuel fuel policy.

You'll be required to hold a deposit for fuel on a credit card when you pick up the car. Fill the rental up and drop it off full and there's no additional fees for fuel.

You might find full to empty fuel policies on some other websites that seem to be offering lower cost deals. Be sure to check the small print for full to empty rentals as the admin and refuelling costs associated with full to empty fuel policies always make it much more expensive than full to full .

Third party liability insurance

Third party liability insurance provides protection in case you cause an incident. If you do, it might injure or kill others (such as your passengers, people in other vehicles or pedestrians), or damage property (their vehicle, house or possessions, for example). As legally they need to be protected, you'd be responsible any claim, or treating injuries or covering their loss of earnings, as well as any legal fees and court fees.

Third party liability is usually subject to an excess, this means you would need to pay the first part of any claim (normally between £1,000 to £1,500, depending on the value of the car, the country and the deal). When you cover your excess , you'll be refunded for all of the excess you have to pay. Or if you take out Premium Cover, the excess amount can be reduced to zero.

Theft liability cover (theft protection)

Theft liability cover (theft protection)
It covers the amount due if the hire car is stolen. It is subject to an excess , this means you'll be required to pay the first part of an insurance claim (normally between £1,000 to £2,750, depending on the deal, the car rental company and the location.

If you choose to insure your excess with an excess reimbursement policy, however, you'll be reimbursed for any of of the excess you pay (See essential cover). Or with Premium Cover your excess amount is often reduced to zero.

Additional driver charges

A car hire agreement is between the car hire company and the one person that signs the contract and will be the main driver. This means you need to ask for any other drivers to be added, and this usually comes with a cost ( can be up to £12a day or even more). However, there are occasional promotions where extra drivers are free. Beware of being asked if you'd like to add a driver without being told the price.

Excess reimbursement insurance

Essential Cover
Choosing excess cover ensures you'll be refunded for the excess that's held on your credit card by the hire car company when you drop off the car.

Excess reimbursement insurance also tends to cover other potential costs, like cleaning, towing, admin fees and misfuelling costs.

Hiring a car with Jucy without an Excess Held on Your Credit Card

The insurance excess is the amount you'd be liable to pay if the car is severely damaged, written off or stolen. The excess on rental cars can be high. It's normally between £800 to £2,000, depending on the car, the country and the deal. If you return the car damaged, or it's stolen or written off, you will be required to pay up to the total amount of the excess.

When you pick up the hire car, the excess is held on your credit card as something called a 'pre-auth' transaction. Pre Auth means that the amount isn't taken from your credit card as a regular payment, it's held as a pending transaction until you return the vehicle. You don't normally pay foreign currency fees on credit cards for pre authorised payments, so provided the car is returned in the same condition as when you collected it, the excess amount will be fully refunded to your card with nothing further to pay.

If you're paying by debit card, the insurance excess amount is taken from your account and refunded when the vehicle is returned. If you intend to use a debit card on collection, as the excess is often very high, it's recommended to buy Premium Cover on our website or to buy top up insurance at the rental desk.

To view car hire options with a £0 or reduced insurance excess check out our Premium Cover rental options.
