Car hire jargon

Car hire excess

For rentals outside of the US and Canada there's usually an excess held on your card* - just like on domestic car insurance in the UK. The excess on rental cars is very high. It's usually between £1,000 to £2,500. If you decide not to insure the insurance excess you will be liable to pay for any damage up to the excess amount. Take a look at our Premium Cover car rental options if you'd prefer not to have the excess amount blocked on your credit card when you pick up the car.

Fuel policy (full to full vs full to empty)

The hire cars on our site come with a full to fuel fuel policy.

You'll be asked to hold a deposit for fuel on a credit card when you pick up the rental. Fill the rental up and return it full and there's nothing further to pay for fuel.

You might see full to empty fuel policies on some other websites that seem to be offering better deals. Always check the terms and conditions for full to empty rentals as usually the refuelling and admin costs associated with full to empty fuel policies always make it more expensive than full to full fuel policies.

Damage Liability

CDW covers the car for accident damage in a similar way the insurance cover you usually have on your own vehicle does. CDW includes an excess amount which you can insure separately (See Excess reimbursement insurance). We also include rental cars that include CDW with no excess amount

Additional driver fees

Car hire agreements is between the hire car company and the one person that signs the contract and will be the main driver. This requires that you will need to ask for any other drivers to be added, and this usually comes with a cost (which can be up to £12a day ). However, there are occasional promotions where extra drivers are free. Always be cautious of being asked if you'd like to add a driver without being told the price.

Excess Insurance

Choosing this policy ensures you'll be refunded for the excess you have to pay to the car hire company .

Excess reimbursement insurance also usually covers other possible costs, such as towing, cleaning or admin fees, or misfuelling fees.

Third party liability cover

Third party liability insurance insures in case you cause an accident. If you do, it could injure or kill others (such as your passengers, pedestrians or people in other vehicles), or damage property (their vehicle, house or possessions, for example). Since they need to be covered, you could be responsible the cost of any damage, or treating injuries or financially covering loss of earnings, as well as the third party's legal fees and any court fees.

Third party liability is usually subject to an excess, which means you would have to pay the first part of any claim (usually between £850 to £1,500, depending on the value of the car, the deal and the country). If you choose to insure your excess amount, you will be reimbursed for any or all of the excess amount you have to pay. If you decide to take out Premium Cover, the excess is often reduced to zero.

Theft liability cover (theft protection)

Theft liability covers the amount due if the rental car is stolen. Theft liability is subject to an excess amount, which means you'll have to pay the first part of an insurance claim (usually between £950 to £1,500, depending on the deal, the car rental company and the location.

When you insure your excess with us, however, you will be reimbursed for any of of the excess you pay (See essential cover). With Premium Cover your excess is often reduced to zero.

Car hire throughout the COVID pandemic

During the COVID pandemic the safety of customers remains our top priority. As before the crisis and throughout we include free cancellation with a full refund on all car hire. During the crisis, we have significantly reduced our amount of time it takes to process refunds, all refunds are handled within 1 business day of receiving the customer cancellation request - the funds clearing back to the customer's credit card in less than one week.

Enhanced hire car cleaning procedures at London United Kingdom

All of our car rental partners are carrying out additional cleaning processes during the current COVID pandemic. The following is an overview of the further measures carried out.

Europcar have implemented extra vehicle deep cleaning and disinfecting measures. Vehicle keys are disinfected between all rentals and placed in a sealed envelope once disinfection is complete. Infection risk has been further reduced by ensuring that a zero contact policy is in place at the pick up and drop off areas, with all work areas cleaned thoroughly between every customer interaction.

Enterprise, Alamo and National locations in are providing a complete clean pledge. Involving the deep cleaning every car between each hire .

New protocols are being implemented by our car hire partner Greenmotion, including the installation of safety protection screens and hand sanitiser units at rental locations. Employees are also now wearing PPE including gloves and masks. All vehicles are being fully sanitised between every rental.

Between each rental, Hertz and Thrifty are carrying out a multi stage cleaning process, including thorough cleaning of the seats, door handles, steering wheel and keys.

Hiring a car with Keddy By Europcar without an Excess Held on Your Credit Card;

The excess is the total amount you'd be required to pay if the car is stolen, written off or severely damaged. However, the excess amount on rental cars can be very expensive. It's normally between £800 to £2,100, depending on the car, the country and the deal. If you return the car damaged, or it's stolen or written off, you will be required to pay some or all of the excess.

When you arrive to collect the vehicle, the insurance excess is held on your card as a 'pre authorised' transaction. Pre Auth means that the amount is not taken from your credit card as a normal payment, it's held as a pending payment until you return the vehicle. You won't normally have to pay foreign currency charges on credit cards for pre authorised transactions, so provided the rental car is returned in the same condition as when it was collected, the excess amount is fully refunded to your credit card without anything additional to pay.

If you intend to pay for your rental by debit card, the insurance excess is taken from your bank account and fully refunded when the car is returned. If you plan to use a debit card on collection, as the excess is often very high, it's recommended to buy Premium Cover when you book or to pay for top up cover at the rental desk.

How to Hire with Keddy By Europcar with a Low Security Deposit

When you pick up the car, you'll usually be asked to leave a security deposit on a credit card or debit card. Deposits can vary significantly subject to the make and model of the vehicle and the insurance excess amount. Car hire Security deposits can range between £50 and £2,500.

We compare all of the car hire options with a low security deposit and in some instances no deposit at all except for fuel. If you reserve a rental with Premium Cover included, you can reduce your deposit to cover only the cost of a full tank of fuel (usually less than £100), this is fully refunded to your card when the rental is dropped off with a full tank.

Keddy By Europcar Car Hire with Cross Border Fees Included;

If you plan to collect your vehicle and drive it over the border , you should always review the terms and conditions. Many car hire providers require that you inform them when you collect the car; and usually charge additional fees to top up the insurance. If you fail to do so, it's possible that your rental will not be insured if you take the rental into a different country.

Renting a Car With Keddy By Europcar including Free Cancellation

All of the car rentals we list on our website include a free cancellation policy. This means that you're able to cancel your rental with a refund at any point up until 48 hours before you collect the car.

When you purchase our Essential Cover product to insure your car hire excess, you're able to cancel this with a refund up until the rental collection time.

All refunds are processed by us in less than 24 hours. If you cancel the booking, the money will be back in your bank account in 7 days.

Hiring a Car with Keddy By Europcar including Child Seats;

You can take along your own child seats for your rental, as long as they meet all of the legal safety requirements for use in your car hire location.

You'll have the option to include them with your rental when you make a booking on our website. Child seats and booster seats are paid for in the local currency when picking up the car. Although it's highly unusual for them to be unavailable, their availability is not guaranteed by most car rental companies

Many of the car rental brands we include allow you to pick up the car in one location and return the vehicle at a different location. If you've chosen a different drop off location for the rental, the prices displayed on our website will include all additional fees for this. You can pay for your car hire on our website using any credit or debit card, including Visa, Mastercard or American Express. We also compare car hire deals at 1000s of locations that accept a debit card on collection. How to rent a car with Keddy By Europcar including Unlimited Mileage

We offer both limited and unlimited mileage rental.

Limited mileage rentals are often cheaper than unlimited. When considering limited mileage rentals, the daily mileage limit is always clearly visibile. If you decide to book a rental including limited mileage, you'll be liable to pay a per mile additional fee if you go above the daily mileage allowance. The mileage allowance for the whole rental period is calculated as (the number of hire days X the daily mileage allowance). You do not have to stay within the daily limit on every day, provided that the total miles used throughout the rental doesn't exceed the number of days X the daily allowance.

What's the cheapest fuel policy for car rental with Keddy By Europcar?

All of our rentals with SUPPLIER include a full to full fuel policy. You'll pick the car up with a full tank and be asked to leave a small deposit for fuel when you collect the car. The deposit is refunded when you return the car with a full tank.

Is the car rental fully insured?

Car rentals with SUPPLIER are usually fully insured with an excess amount. You can either purchase Essential cover for the excess or choose Premium cover to reduce the excess amount to zero. We clearly explain all of the insurance details every step of the way.

What should I take with me when I collect the car from Keddy By Europcar?

To collect your car the lead driver should present a Valid driver's license, Passport or National Identity Card, Credit or debit card in the lead driver's name, Home and local (hotel, villa etc) address and a Booking confirmation email. Any other requirements at collection will be clearly explained in your booking confirmation email.

Security Deposit

When collecting your vehicle you will be required to leave a security deposit of your estimated rental charges PLUS £700 on your card. This will be refunded on return so long as your vehicle is not stolen or damaged.

Most major credit and debit cards are accepted including American Express, Diners Club, Mastercard and Visa.

The vehicle will be full when you collect it and should be refueled by you just prior to dropping it off again

Mileage Policy

Limited

There are restrictions on the number of miles/kilometres you may travel before incurring additional charges. This is often a cheaper option but, if you will be travelling large distances, you may wish to choose a product that includes Unlimited Mileage.

Fees and Taxes

All taxes are included in this rate.

Admin fees: Please also be aware that most suppliers charge administration fees following damages or for processing fines. Keddy by Europcar charge a £0 GBP administration fee per incident should there be any accidents, theft or parking/traffic infringements.

Vehicle Collection

Directions

On Site (Shuttle): The collection desk is on airport premises and a short transfer away.

Credit/Debit Card

When you collect your vehicle you must present a valid credit card or debit in the lead driver's name on which a security deposit ( rental charges PLUS £700 ) will be charged.

This amount is reserved on your card until you return the vehicle.

The supplier accepts all major credit cards (Visa, AMEX, Master Card, Diners Club and Euro Card). Visa and Mastercard debit cards are also accepted.

For credit cards, the security deposit is reserved on your card until you return the vehicle. For debit cards the payment is taken from your account and refunded on return but, depending on your bank, this can take 4-7 days. Purchasing additional cover at the collection desk will reduce the size of this deposit.

Rental Agreement

Once your paperwork has been inspected, you will be asked to sign a Rental Agreement. This is a contract between you and the car hire company and contains the terms and conditions for your rental. The agreement may include some location-specific conditions as well as setting out the limitations of any cover you have and the extra costs you may be liable for. You will be given the keys once you and any additional drivers have signed the agreement but don't rush, once you've signed you are legally bound to the terms of that document.

Cross Border Rules

Vehicles hired in the UK may be taken to other countries outside the United Kingdom but only by purchasing Europcar's Europdrive Package at the collection desk. The price for this varies by length of rental as follows: 1-3 days = £70.00, 4-7 days = £90.00, 8-13 days = £120.00, 14-20 days = £140.00, 21-27 days = £160.00, 28+ days = £200.00.

If your rental originates in Northern Ireland there is a reduced rate for travel to the ROI (1-2 days = £25.00, 3-4 days = £58.33, 5-6 days = £83.33, 7-10 days = £125.00, 11+ days = £104.17).

Late Collection

Any customers who will be more than 30 minutes late for collection are advised to contact their rental office to avoid having their booking cancelled. If you're collecting from an airport but are delayed, the desk will usually remain open if you provided a valid a flight number as part of your booking. It is standard practice in the car hire industry to charge you an extra Out Of Hours fee if the branch has to remain open beyond their normal hours for you to arrive.

Insurance and Cover

Included in the price

This product includes Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) with Theft Protection and Third Party Liability Cover. This means that you are insured for damage to or theft of the vehicle and also against any third party claims. Should there be a claim, you will be liable up to the value of the excess payment unless additional insurance is taken out.

24/7 Roadside Assistance is provided but you may be liable for the costs should you deemed to be at fault.

Exclusions

The basic policy does not include cover for medical claims by you or your passengers or cover for your personal possesions.

Damage to glass/windows, lights and tyres/wheels is not included in the standard CDW policy. Cover for these items can be added by taking out extra cover either on our site or at the collection desk.

Lastly, you are also not covered for breakdown recovery/assistance for flat tyres or faults where you are responsible (e.g. lost keys or mis-fueling). You can extend your level of cover at the collection desk.

Insurance Excess

This vehicle comes with basic cover for theft or damage to the vehicle.

Should there be any damage, you will be liable for up to £1100.00 inclusive of taxes.

Both Stress Free and Europcar offer excess protection products to provide extra cover for this.

Please pay attention to the procedure for reporting an incident which will be explained in your rental agreement at the collection desk. Failing to follow this procedure could result in you being liable for the full value of the claim.

Additional Info

Fuel Options

Depending on the supplier, you will typically have two choices when it comes to paying for fuel.

  • Full to Full: This is usually the most cost effective option. The vehicle will be fuill when you collect and you must fill it up again just prior to return. If you select this policy and do not re-fill the vehicle, the supplier will charge you for the fuel you have used at a price that is often higher than would be charged at a local service station.
  • Pre-paid: This is the most convenient option. You pre-pay your tank of fuel (including a service charge) which means you collect the vehicle full and can return it empty at no extra charge. Note that you will not be refunded for fuel you do not use. Some suppliers give us the "pre-paid" rate where we include this in your price but usually we offer "Full to Full" and you would ask to pre-pay your tank at the collection desk.

Additional Drivers

Additional drivers can be added at the time of collection. The additional driver fee is £11.66 per driver, per day to a maximum charge of £116.66 per driver.

The same age and license conditions listed for the lead driver will also apply to each additional driver. Be aware that larger or more expensive vehicles require all drivers to be 25 or older.

Other Extras

When driving in the UK, any child who is under 12 years old or less than 135cm (4ft 5in) must use a child seat. Europcar offers the following options:

  • Child seat for 1-3 years/9-18 kg
  • Child seat for 4-7 years/15-30 kg
  • Child seat for 0-12 month/0-13 kg
  • Child booster seat (Less than 135cm)

In the UK, you will be charged £10.83 per day for a child seat or £5pd for a booster seat (both to a maximum charge of 10 days).

GPS units are also available for £12.49 per day (max £124.90)..

All extras should be requested as part of your booking to ensure availability and all extras are paid for on collection.

Changes to length of rental

Most suppliers have a small grace period for late returns (Europcar state 30 mins) but it is always advisable to ensure the supplier is aware of late returns or extensions to your rental. Often the charges for this will be reduced or waived when the supplier is informed in advance.

You may return your vehicle early; there will be no extra charge for this but nor will you be refunded for any unused days.

You may extend your rental by contacting the supplier at least 2 hours before the end of the rental. You will still need to return the vehicle to a supplier office and enter a new rental agreement.. The maximum Length of Rental is 28 days

General Terms

Cancellations
It is free to cancel your booking at any time until 48 hours before collecting the vehicle. Once within 48 hours of collection, you will not be able to cancel your booking and any payments made cannot be refunded.

Amendments
If you wish to make changes to your booking, you will most likely be required to cancel and rebook. There is no cost for cancellations. If you only wish to change your flight or phone number, you can email our customer services team on help@stressfreecarrental.com.

Refunds after vehicle collection
The suppler may refuse collection of your vehicle for reasons such as not being fit to drive, missing required identification or not having the correc type of payment card in the lead driver's name with sufficient funds available. In the event of such a refusal, no payments made will be refunded.

The supplier does not offer credit or refunds for early returns of the vehicle.

In the event of "Delayed Charges" (fines, motorway tolls, failing to refuel, extra days, damages, loss and any associated admin charges), your Security Deposit may only be part-refunded.

Vehicle Types
Unless we indicate a "guaranteed model", vehicles are reserved by class of vehicle and not by make and model. The vehicles displayed are the commonly used models for our partners in your chosen country. If that particular vehicle is not available, the supplier will typically offer another vehicle of the same or higher class at no additional cost.

Disabled Passengers
If you are travelling with disabled passengers, be sure to forward your confirmation email to help@stressfreecarrental.com with any special requirements and we will forward these to the supplier for you. We can't offer any guarantees that they will be able to help but we're happy to try. If you're collecting from an airport, providing your flight number will help.
