It provides insurance protection for damage in a similar way the insurance cover you usually have on your own car does. CDW usually includes an excess amount which you can cover separately (See Excess reimbursement insurance). We also include cars that include CDW with a zero excess

Extra driver fees

Car hire agreements is between the hire car company and the individual who signs the contract and will be the named driver. This requires that you have to ask for other drivers to be added, this usually means an additional cost (which can be up to £11a day ). We often list promotions that include extra drivers are free. Beware of being asked if you'd like to add a driver without being informed of the price.

Excess reimbursement insurance also usually covers other possible costs, like cleaning, towing, admin fees and misfuelling costs.

Fuel policy (full to full vs full to empty)

You'll be asked to hold a deposit for fuel on your credit card when you collect the hire car. Fill the car up and drop it off full and there will be nothing further to pay for fuel.

You will see full to empty policies on other sites that seem to be offering better deals. Be sure to check the small print for full to empty rentals as usually the refuelling and admin fees associated with full to empty fuel policies make it more expensive than full to full .

Insurance excess

For rentals outside of the US and Canada there is almost always an insurance excess to pay* - this is similar to the excess on domestic car insurance in the UK. However, the excess on rental cars is high. It's often between £1,100 to £3,000. If you fail to cover the excess you could be liable to pay for any damage to the car up to the value of the excess amount. Check out the Premium Cover rental car options if you'd like to avoid having the excess amount blocked on your credit card when you collect the car.

Third party liability insurance

Third party liability insurance provides protection in case you cause an accident. If you do, it could kill or injure others (such as your passengers, pedestrians or people in other vehicles), or damage their property (their vehicle, house or possessions, for example). Since they need to be protected, you'd be responsible any claim, or treating any injuries or covering loss of earnings, as well as the third party's legal costs and court costs.

Third party liability is usually subject to an excess, which means you would need to pay the first part of any claim (usually between £750 to £2,000, depending on the value of the car, the country and the deal). If you choose to cover your excess , you will be reimbursed for all of the excess amount you have to pay. Or if you take out Premium Cover, your excess is often reduced .

Theft liability insurance (theft protection)
It covers the amount due if the hire car is stolen. Theft liability usually includes an excess , which means you'll be required to pay the first part of an insurance claim (normally between £900 to £2,000, depending on the deal, the car rental company and the location.

When you insure your excess with us, however, you will be refunded for any of of the excess amount you pay (See essential cover). Or with Premium Cover your excess can be reduced.
