Hiring a car with Record Go without an Excess Held on Your Credit Card

Hiring a car with Record Go without an Excess Held on Your Credit Card

The excess is the amount you'd be liable to pay if the vehicle is written off, severely damaged or stolen. However, the excess on hire cars can be very high. It's normally between £800 to £3,000. If you return the car damaged, or it's stolen or written off, you'll have to pay some or all of the excess.

When you pick up the rental car, the excess is held on your credit card as a 'pre-auth' transaction. Pre Auth means that the money is not taken from your credit card as a normal transaction, it's held as a pending payment until you return the vehicle. You don't normally pay foreign currency fees on credit cards for pre authorised transactions, so provided the rental car is returned in the same condition as when it was collected, this amount is fully refunded to your card without anything additional to pay.

If you intend to pay for your rental by debit card, the excess amount is taken from your account and refunded when the car is returned. If you intend to use debit card on collection, as the excess can be high, it's recommended to buy Premium Cover on our website or to buy top up cover at the collection desk.

To view car hire options with a £0 or reduced excess check out our Premium Cover rental options.

How to Hire with Record Go with a Low Security Deposit

When you collect the car, you'll often be asked to leave a security deposit on your debit card or credit card. Deposits can vary significantly subject to the make and model of the vehicle and the insurance excess . Car hire Security deposits can range between £0 and £2,300.

We compare all of the car hire options with a low security deposit and in some instances no deposit at all except for fuel. If you decide to reserve a rental with Premium Cover included, you can reduce your deposit to cover only fuel (often less than £100), this is refunded when the rental is returned with a full tank.

Limited mileage rentals are often a cheaper option than unlimited. When considering limited mileage rentals, the mileage limit is always clearly visibile. If you choose a rental with limited mileage, you will be liable to pay an additional fee if you go above the daily allowance. The total mileage allowance for the rental is calculated as (the number of hire days multiplied by the daily mileage allowance). Car rental terminology explained

Additional driver costs

Additional driver charges
Car rental contracts is between the car hire company and the one individual that signs the contract and will be the named driver. This requires that you have to ask for other drivers to be added, and this usually means an additional cost (which can be up to £12a day or even more). However, there are occasional promotions where extra drivers are free. Always be cautious of being asked if you'd like to add a driver without being told the price.

Insurance excess

For rentals outside of the US and Canada there is usually an excess held on your card* - just like on your own car in the UK. The excess on rental cars is very high. It's often in the region of £1,200 to £2,500. If you decide not to insure the excess you will be liable to pay for damage to the car up to the value of the excess amount. Take a look at the Premium Cover car hire options if you'd prefer not to have a large amount held on your credit card .
Hire car excess

Excess Insurance

Essential Cover
Choosing essential cover ensures you'll be refunded for any of the excess you have to pay to the hire car company when you drop off the car.

This insurance also usually covers other possible costs, such as towing, cleaning or admin fees, or misfuelling costs.

Theft liability insurance (theft protection)

It covers the amount due if the rental car is stolen. It usually includes an excess , this means you would need to pay the first part of an insurance claim (usually between £800 to £2,000, depending on the deal, the car rental company and the location.

If you choose to insure your excess with us, however, you'll be reimbursed for any or all of of the excess you have to pay (See our essential cover). With Premium Cover your excess can be reduced.
Theft liability insurance (theft protection)

Fuel policy (full to full vs full to empty)

Fuel policy (full to full vs full to empty)
The rentals on the site always come with a full to fuel fuel policy.

You'll be required to pay a small deposit for fuel on your credit card when you pick up the hire car. Ensure that you fill the car up and return it full and there will be nothing further to pay for fuel.

You will see full to empty policies on other websites that seem to be offering cheaper deals. Always check the terms and conditions for full to empty rentals as the admin and refuelling charges associated with full to empty fuel policies always make it more expensive than full to full .

Third party liability insurance

Third party liability insurance insures in case you cause an incident. If you do, it might kill or injure others (for instance your passengers, pedestrians or people in other vehicles), or damage their property (their vehicle, house or possessions, for example). Since they need to be covered, you could be responsible any claim, or treating any injuries or covering their loss of earnings, as well as the third party's legal fees and court costs.

Third party liability is subject to an excess, which means you'll need to pay the first part of any claim (normally between £1,000 to £2,000, varying dependent on the car, the country and the deal). If you choose to cover your excess amount, you'll be reimbursed for any or all of the excess amount you have to pay. Or if you take out Premium Cover, the excess amount is often reduced .
Third party liability cover

Collision damage waiver (CDW)

Damage Liability
CDW provides insurance protection for damage in the same way the insurance you usually have on your personal car does. CDW usually includes an excess which you can insure with an additional policy (See Excess reimbursement insurance). Our website also include car hire that include CDW with no excess amount
