When collecting the vehicle, the lead driver must present the following:
- Valid photo driver's license
(If this is not written in Latin characters, a certified translation is also required)
- Passport or National Identity card
- Credit card or debit card in the lead driver's name (American Express, Diner’s, Visa and Mastercard only)
- Booking confirmation email
- Non-EU drivers: International Driver's Permit
For health and safety reasons, all customers are asked to check-in online prior to collecting their vehicle .
When collecting your vehicle you will be required to leave a security deposit
on your payment card.

Your fuel options will be explained on collection. As a general rule you will save money choosing 'Full to Full' and filling the vehicle up yourself prior to its return.

Fees and Taxes
Local fees and taxes are included in this price.
Between 15/Nov and 15/Apr each year, snow tyres or chains will be provided where required by law.
Note that Sicily by Car charge a €61 admin fee for processing of traffic/parking/toll violations or for the processing of any damage/theft claims. This may be higher if you do not report an incident correctly. If you are late and collect or return beyond normal opening hours, you will be charged an extra supplement for each hour that you are late (€31 first hour, €70 each hour after that - both values excl. location charges and taxes). All fees mentioned here still aply when Sicily by Car's extra excess cover is taken out.
On Site: The collection desk is on airport premises and a short walk away.
Sicily by Car accept most major credit cards (American Express, Diner’s, Visa and Mastercard) on all vehicles.
Check that the card will not expire prior to your return date.
Note - Debit cards
: As this is a smaller class of vehicle, it should
be possible to use a Visa or Mastercard debit card but we can't guarantee this as local branch staff have their own policies. There are also extra charges for debit card usage (€30 / €42 per day depending on vehicle type) PLUS a higher deposit to leave. If you absolutely must use a debit card, we recommend that you contact us on email@example.com
telling us that you wish to use a debit card with Siciliy by Car and the location name. We will then enquire on your behalf.
Once your paperwork has been inspected, you will be asked to sign a Rental Agreement. This is a contract between you and the car hire company and contains the terms and conditions for your rental. The agreement may include some location-specific conditions as well as setting out the limitations of any cover you have and the extra costs you may be liable for. You will be given the keys once you and any additional drivers have signed the agreement but don't rush, once you've signed you are legally bound to the terms of that document.
Cross Border Rules
Sicily by car have no addtional charges for travel to any of the following countries:
Italy, France (and Corsica), Germany, Spain, Portugal, Andorra, the Vatican City, Republic of San Marino, The Principality of Monaco, Switzerland, Belgium, Holland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Liechtenstein, England, Ireland, Luxembourg, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia
Ferry travel (between these countries) is also permitted.
That said, we do recommend that you contact your collection branch prior to arrival with your travel plans. Some destination countries have their own laws on the level of cover required and, depending on the branch you collect from, this may not be included.
If you are late to collect your car, Sicily by Car will hold you car for you for 2 hours after which your bookng may be cancelled. If you are late due to a delayed flight and have provided a valid flight number, this grace period is extended to 4 hours. We recommend that you contact your collection office if you are to be delayed for close to or more than this number of hours, especially if this is around the time the office usually closes.
Be warned that Sicily by Car charge by the hour for late collections or returns (excluding key-box) when outside normal opening hours, regardless of reason. You will pay €30 for the first hour that you are late and €70 for each additional hour (values are plus VAT and location surcharges).
Insurance and Cover
Included in the price
This product includes basic Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) with Theft Protection and Third Party Liability Cover. This means that you are insured for certain damage to or theft of the vehicle and also against any third party claims.
Not all types of damage are included in this basic cover. Additional cover for wheels and glass and other parts of the vehicle is only available when you purchase a premium level of cover. Without this, if there is an insurance claim, you will be liable up to the value of the excess payment.
In any situation, you are not covered for damage or loss as a result of violating the conditions set out in your rental agreement.
No matter what cover you purchase, you are not covered for mis-fueling, special cleaning, internal parts (including upholstery), scratches caused by vegetation or for any vehicle accessories (including documents).
Should the vehicle need to be recovered, you will be liable for the costs unless you also take out Road Assistance Plus at the collection desk.
Should there be any damage you will also be liable to pay administration charges (€61). Further charges may apply if you do not follow the correct procedure for reporting an accident. In the event of vehicle theft, you would still be liable for the value of the full tank of fuel.
This vehicle comes with basic cover for theft or damage to the vehicle.
Should there be any damage you will be liable for up to €1200 or, in event of theft, €1600 (inclusive of taxes).
If you would like to reduce the risk of any large payouts, you can select a vehicle that includes Sicily by Car's premium cover (known as "Super Gold Protection") which adds cover for additional parts of the vehicle (like the roof, underside, tyres and glass) and reduces your excess to zero.
Please pay attention to the procedure for reporting an incident which will be explained in your rental agreement at the collection desk. Failing to follow this procedure could result in you being liable for the full value of the claim.
Depending on the supplier, you will typically have two choices when it comes to paying for fuel.
- Full to Full: This is usually the most cost effective option. The vehicle will be fuill when you collect and you must fill it up again just prior to return. If you select this policy and do not re-fill the vehicle, the supplier will charge you for the fuel you have used at a price that is often higher than would be charged at a local service station.
- Pre-paid: This is the most convenient option. You pre-pay your tank of fuel (including a service charge) which means you collect the vehicle full and can return it empty at no extra charge. Note that you will not be refunded for fuel you do not use. Some suppliers give us the "pre-paid" rate where we include this in your price but usually we offer "Full to Full" and you would ask to pre-pay your tank at the collection desk.

There is no need to pre-book additional drivers as they can be added at the collection desk.
Additional drivers will cost approximately €10.00 per day (slightly higher for young drivers 19-22) and only 2 additional drivers may be added per rental. Each additional driver will need their Driver's License and Passport.
When driving in Italy, children who are less than 12 years old or 150 cm (4 ft, 9 in) must use appropriate child restraints. Sicily by Car offer an Infant Seat (less than 2 years old) or a Child Seat. These will cost approximately €50 per rental.
GPS and Wifi systems can also be booked for around €5 per day. No toll device is available.
Priority Check-in allows you to collect your keys faster but must be pre-booked on our site.
Winter Driving: Between 15/Nov and 15/Apr each year, snow tyres or chains are mandatory by law throughout much of central and northern Italy (and some southern areas). The laws vary by region and type of road but, if required, these will be provided at no extra cost. If you require snow chains and they are not already provided, you will be charged around €50 per rental for small to medium cars and double that for larger vehicles. Ski Racks may also be added to your booking, also for around €50 per rental..
All prices for extras shown here are approximate as they will vary by location type.
Changes to length of rental
On returning the vehicle you will have a 59 minute grace period for late returns before you will be charged for a whole, additional day's rental. Vehicles may be returned early - there is no extra charge for this but nor will you be refunded for any unused days.
It is free to cancel your booking at any time until 48 hours before collecting the vehicle. Once within 48 hours of collection, you will not be able to cancel your booking and any payments made cannot be refunded.
If you wish to make changes to your booking, you will most likely be required to cancel and rebook. There is no cost for cancellations. If you only wish to change your flight or phone number, you can email our customer services team on firstname.lastname@example.org.
Refunds after vehicle collection
The suppler may refuse collection of your vehicle for reasons such as not being fit to drive, missing required identification or not having the correc type of payment card in the lead driver's name with sufficient funds available. In the event of such a refusal, no payments made will be refunded.
The supplier does not offer credit or refunds for early returns of the vehicle.
In the event of "Delayed Charges" (fines, motorway tolls, failing to refuel, extra days, damages, loss and any associated admin charges), your Security Deposit may only be part-refunded.
Unless we indicate a "guaranteed model", vehicles are reserved by class of vehicle and not by make and model. The vehicles displayed are the commonly used models for our partners in your chosen country. If that particular vehicle is not available, the supplier will typically offer another vehicle of the same or higher class at no additional cost.
If you are travelling with disabled passengers, be sure to forward your confirmation email to email@example.com with any special requirements and we will forward these to the supplier for you. We can't offer any guarantees that they will be able to help but we're happy to try. If you're collecting from an airport, providing your flight number will help.
