Employees are also now wearing PPE such as gloves and masks. Each car is being thoroughly cleaned and sanitised between each rental.

We will continue to update this information as it becomes available.

How to rent a car with Sixt including Unlimited Mileage;

We offer limited and unlimited mileage rental.

Limited mileage rentals are often cheaper than unlimited. For limited mileage rentals, the mileage limit will always be clearly displayed. If you choose a rental including limited mileage, you will be liable to pay a per mile additional fee if you go above the daily mileage allowance. The mileage allowance for the whole rental period is calculated as (the number of rental days X the daily mileage allowance). You don't have to stay within the daily allowance on every day, provided that the total miles used during the rental does not go over the number of days multiplied by the daily limit.

If you decide to book a limited mileage rental, we recommend checking the fees for excess mileage. These can be found in our term and conditions.

Sixt Car Hire with Cross Border Fees Included

If you want to collect your rental and take it across the border , be sure to review the terms and conditions. Almost all car hire providers require that you let them know on collection; and usually charge extra fees to top up your insurance. If you do not let them know, it's possible that the rental car will not be insured if you take the rental into a different country.

You'll find the details of cross border policies by checking the Rental terms and checking the Cross Border Rules section.

If you're struggling to find the cross border terms and conditions get in touch with one of our car rental advisors and they'll be happy to help.

How to Hire with Sixt with a Low Security Deposit;

When you pick up the car, you will usually be required to leave a security deposit on your credit card or debit card. Deposits vary significantly subject to the make and model of the car and the insurance excess . Car rental Security deposits can range between £50 and £2,000.

We compare all of the car hire options with a low security deposit and in some instances no deposit at all except for fuel. When you choose to book a rental with Premium Cover included, you can reduce the deposit to cover only fuel (usually less than £100), which is refunded when the vehicle is returned with a full tank.

Hiring a car with Sixt without an Excess Held on Your Credit Card

The excess is the amount you would be required to pay if the vehicle is severely damaged, written off or stolen. The excess on rental cars can be very expensive. It's often between £950 to £2,000, depending on the car, the country and the deal. If the car is returned damaged, or it's stolen or written off, you'll have to pay up to the total amount of the excess.

When you pick up the rental car, the excess is held on your credit card as something called a 'pre-auth' transaction. Pre Auth means that the money isn't taken from your credit card as a regular payment, it's held as a pending transaction until you return the vehicle. You won't normally pay currency fees on credit cards for pre authorised payments, so provided the vehicle is dropped off in the same condition as when you collected it, this amount will be fully refunded to your credit card without anything further to pay.

If you intend to pay for your rental by debit card, the excess amount is taken from your bank account and refunded when the car is dropped off. If you plan to use debit card on collection, as the excess can be high, we recommend to either buy Premium Cover on our website or to pay for top up insurance at the collection desk.

To view rental options with a £0 or reduced insurance excess review our Premium Cover options.

Hiring a car with Sixt including One Way Fees;

Many of the vehicle rental providers we include allow you to collect your vehicle in one location and return the vehicle at a different location. If you've chosen a different drop off location for the rental, the prices you'll see on the website will include all extra fees for this. You can also see a full breakdown of the additional fees on the payment page.

Hiring a Car with Sixt including Child Seats

You can use your own child seats and booster seats for your vehicle rental, as long as they meet all of the legal safety requirements for use in your car hire location.

You'll also be offered the option to include them with your car rental when making a booking on our website. Child seats are paid in local currency when you collect the rental.

Car hire terms

Theft liability insurance (theft protection)

It insures the amount due if the hire car is stolen. It usually includes an excess , this means you'll need to pay the first part of any claim (usually between £950 to £2,500, depending on the deal, the car rental company and the location.

When you insure your excess with an excess reimbursement policy, however, you'll be refunded for the of the excess amount you have to pay (See our essential cover). With Premium Cover your excess can be reduced to zero.

Excess Insurance

Buying this policy means you'll be reimbursed for any of the excess you have to pay to the rental car company .

This insurance also tends to cover other possible costs, such as towing, cleaning or admin fees, or misfuelling costs.

Third party liability insurance

Third party liability insurance insures in case you cause an accident. If you do, it could injure or kill others (such as your passengers, people in other vehicles or pedestrians), or damage property (their vehicle, house or possessions, for example). As legally they need to be protected, you could be responsible the cost of any damage, or treating any injuries or covering loss of earnings, as well as the third party's legal costs and court fees.

Third party liability is usually subject to an excess, this means you would need to pay the first part of any claim (normally between £800 to £1,600, depending on the value of the car, the deal and the country). If you choose to insure the excess , you will be reimbursed for any or all of the excess you have to pay. If you decide to take out Premium Cover, the excess amount can be reduced to zero.

CDW (Collision damage waiver)

It insures the car for damage in the same way the insurance you usually have on your own car does. It includes an excess which you can cover with an additional policy (See Excess reimbursement insurance). We also list rental cars on the site that include CDW with no excess amount

Extra driver fees

A rental contract is between the car hire company and the person that signs the agreement and will be the named driver. This means you will have to ask for other drivers to be added, and this usually comes with a cost ( can be up to £13a day or even more). However, there are occasional promotions that include extra drivers are free. Beware of being asked if you'd like to add a driver without being informed of the price.

Insurance excess

For rentals outside of the US and Canada there's almost always an excess held on your card* - this is similar to the excess on your own car in the UK. However, the excess on rental cars is very high. It's often in the region of £1,000 to £2,500. If you decide not to insure the insurance excess you will be liable to pay for any damage up to the excess . Check out the Premium Cover car rental options if you'd prefer not to have a large amount held on your card .

Fuel policy (full to full vs full to empty)

The rentals on our site always come with a full to fuel fuel policy.

When you collect you rental you'll be asked to pay a small deposit for fuel on a credit card when you collect the car. Fill the rental up and return it full and there will be nothing further to pay for fuel.

You might see full to empty policies on other sites that seem to be offering better deals. Always check the terms and conditions for full to empty rentals as usually the refuelling and admin costs associated with full to empty fuel policies make it much more expensive than full to full fuel policies.
