How to rent a car with Snap including Unlimited Mileage

We offer limited and unlimited mileage rentals.

Limited mileage rentals can often be less expensive than unlimited. When considering limited mileage rentals, the mileage allowance will always be clearly visibile. If you decide to book a rental with limited mileage, you will be liable to pay an additional fee if you go above the daily mileage allowance. The mileage allowance for the whole rental duration is calculated as (the number of rental days multiplied by the daily allowance). Hiring a car with Snap without an Excess Held on Your Credit Card

The insurance excess is the total amount you'd be required to pay if the vehicle is written off, severely damaged or stolen. The excess amount on rental cars can be very high. It's normally between £800 to £2,000. If the car is returned damaged, or it's stolen or written off, you'll have to pay up to the total amount of the excess.

When you pick up the rental car, the insurance excess is held on your credit card as something called a 'pre authorised' transaction. This means that the amount is not charged to your card as a regular payment, it's held as a pending transaction until you return the vehicle. You don't usually pay foreign currency fees on credit cards for pre authorised payments, so provided the rental car is returned in the same condition as when you collected it, the amount will be fully refunded to your card without anything further to pay.

If you intend to pay for your rental by debit card, the excess amount is taken from your bank account and fully refunded when the car is dropped off. If you plan to use debit card on collection, as the excess amount can be very high, we recommend to either buy Premium Cover on our website or to buy top up insurance at the collection desk.

To view rental options with a £0 or reduced insurance excess take a look at our Premium Cover options.

Third party liability insurance

Third party liability cover
Third party liability insurance provides protection in case you cause an incident. If you do, it could kill or injure other people (for instance your passengers, pedestrians or people in other vehicles), or damage property (their vehicle, house or possessions, for example). As legally they need to be covered, you could be responsible any claim, or treating injuries or financially covering loss of earnings, as well as the third party's legal costs and any court fees.

Third party liability is subject to an excess, this means you'll have to pay the first part of any claim (normally between £750 to £1,500, depending on the value of the car, the deal and the country). If you choose to cover your excess amount, you will be refunded for all of the excess you have to pay. If you decide to take out Premium Cover, the excess amount can be reduced to zero.

Theft liability insurance (theft protection)

Theft liability covers the amount due if the rental car is stolen. Theft liability is subject to an excess amount, this means you would be required to pay the first part of an insurance claim (usually between £800 to £1,500, depending on the car, the country and the deal.

If you choose to insure your excess , however, you will be refunded for the of the excess amount you pay (See our essential cover). Or with Premium Cover the excess can be reduced.
Theft liability cover (theft protection)

Excess Insurance

Excess Insurance
Buying essential cover means you'll be reimbursed for any of the excess that's held on your credit card by the rental car company .

This insurance also tends to cover other potential costs, like cleaning, towing, admin fees and misfuelling fees.

Damage Liability

It insures the car for damage in the same way the insurance you usually have on your personal vehicle does. It includes an excess amount which you can choose to insure separately (See Excess reimbursement insurance). We also list car hire on the site that include CDW with no excess amount
Collision damage waiver (CDW)

Additional driver fees

Extra driver costs
A car hire agreement is between the car hire company and the one individual who signs the agreement and will be the named driver. This means you will need to ask for any other drivers to be added, and this usually comes with a cost ( can be up to £11a day ). However, there are occasional special offers that include extra drivers are free. Always be cautious of being asked if you'd like to include a driver without being told the cost.

Insurance excess

For rentals outside of the US and Canada there's usually an excess to pay* - this is similar to the excess on your own car in the UK. The excess on hire cars can be high. It's normally in the region of £1,100 to £2,500. If you fail to insure the insurance excess amount you will be liable to pay for any damage to the car up to the value of the excess . Take a look at the Premium Cover car rental options if you'd prefer not to have the excess amount blocked on your card when you pick up the car.

Fuel policy (full to full vs full to empty)

Fuel policy (full to full vs full to empty)
The rentals on our site include a full to fuel fuel policy.

When you collect you rental you'll be asked to pay a deposit for fuel on your credit card when you collect the car. Ensure that you fill the car up and return it full and there will be nothing further to pay for fuel.

You will see full to empty fuel policies on some other websites that seem to be offering better deals. Always check the terms and conditions for full to empty rentals as usually the refuelling and admin costs associated with full to empty fuel policies make it much more expensive than full to full .
