Car hire jargon explained

Fuel policy (full to full vs full to empty)

Fuel policy (full to full vs full to empty)
The rentals on our site come with a full to fuel fuel policy.

You'll be asked to hold a deposit for fuel on a credit card when you pick up the car. Fill the car up and return it full and there will be nothing further to pay for fuel.

You will see full to empty policies on other sites that seem to be offering cheaper deals. Be sure to check the terms and conditions for full to empty rentals as the admin and refuelling charges associated with full to empty fuel policies always make it more expensive than full to full .

Rental car excess

For rentals outside of the US and Canada there is usually an insurance excess to pay* - this is similar to the excess on your own car in the UK. However, the excess on rental cars can be high. It's often in the region of £1,000 to £3,000. If you decide not to insure the excess amount you will be liable to pay for any damage to the car up to the value of the excess . Take a look at our Premium Cover car rental options if you'd prefer not to have the excess amount held on your card when you collect the car.
Car Rental excess

Collision damage waiver (CDW)

Damage Liability
It covers the car for accident damage in a similar way the insurance cover you usually have on your personal car does. CDW includes an excess which you can insure separately (See Excess reimbursement insurance). Our website also include cars that include CDW with a zero excess

Theft liability cover (theft protection)

Theft liability covers the amount due if the rental car is stolen. It usually includes an excess amount, which means you'll need to pay the first part of any claim (usually between £950 to £2,000, depending on the deal, the car rental company and the location.

When you insure your excess with us, however, you will be reimbursed for the of the excess amount you pay (See our essential cover). With Premium Cover your excess can be reduced to zero.
Theft liability insurance (theft protection)

Excess Insurance

Excess reimbursement insurance
Purchasing this policy means you'll be reimbursed for any of the excess that's held on your credit card by the rental car company .

This insurance also usually covers other possible costs, like cleaning, towing, admin fees and misfuelling costs.

Additional driver charges

Car rental contracts is between the car hire company and the person that signs the contract and will be the main driver. This means you need to ask for any other drivers to be added, this usually means an additional cost ( can be up to £10a day or even more). However, there are occasional promotions that include extra drivers are free. Beware of being asked if you'd like to include a driver without being told the price.
Extra driver fees

Third party liability insurance

Third party liability insurance
Third party liability insurance provides protection in case you cause an incident. If you do, it might kill or injure others (for instance your passengers, people in other vehicles or pedestrians), or damage their property (their vehicle, house or possessions, for example). Since they need to be covered, you could be responsible the cost of any damage, or treating injuries or covering their loss of earnings, as well as the third party's legal fees and any court costs.

Third party liability is subject to an excess, which means you would need to pay the first part of any claim (normally between £850 to £3,000, varying dependent on the car, the deal and the country). If you choose to insure your excess amount, you'll be refunded for all of the excess you have to pay. If you decide to take out Premium Cover, your excess amount is often reduced .

Hiring a car with Surprice Car Rental without an Excess Held on Your Credit Card

The insurance excess is the total amount you would be liable to pay if the vehicle is written off, severely damaged or stolen. The excess amount on hire cars can be high. It's often between £1,000 to £2,200. If the car is returned damaged, or it's stolen or written off, you will have to pay up to the total amount of the excess.

When you arrive to collect the rental car, the insurance excess is held on your card as a 'pre authorised' transaction. Pre Auth means that the money is not taken from your credit card as a regular payment, it's held as a pending transaction until you return the vehicle. You don't usually have to pay currency charges on credit cards for pre authorised payments, so provided the rental car is dropped off in the same condition as when you collected it, the amount will be fully refunded to your credit card without anything additional to pay.

If you're paying by debit card, the insurance excess amount is taken from your account and fully refunded when the vehicle is returned. If you intend to use debit card on collection, as the excess amount can be high, it's recommended to buy Premium Cover when you book or to pay for top up insurance at the collection desk.
