Unlimited Mileage Car Hire

Looking for car hire including unlimited mileage? We've made it really easy to find options including limited and unlimited mileage. Unlimited mileage car hire is usually slightly more expensive than limited but it can save money if you're taking a long road trip on your rental. You can use the filters on the search results page to find car hire with unlimited mileage.

Car Hire with a Free Additional Driver

Look out for offers on our website which include a free extra driver bundled into the price. Use the filters on the search results page to find bundled deals. You can also add an extra driver on the extras page before you complete your booking.

Hiring a Car with No Cancellation Fee

All the rentals we offer include free cancellation. Free Cancellation means that you're able to cancel the car hire with a refund at any point up until 48 hours before picking up the vehicle.

If you have purchased our Essential Cover product to cover the car rental excess, you can cancel this with a full refund anytime up until the rental start time.

We process all refunds in less than 24 hours. If you have to cancel your rental, this means that the refund will be back in your bank account in 7 days.

How to Rent a Car with a Low Security Deposit

When you pick up the car, you'll be asked to leave a security deposit on a debit card or credit card. Deposits vary significantly dependent on the make and model of the vehicle and the excess . Car rental Security deposits can range between £0 and £2,500.

We compare all of the car hire options with a low security deposit and in some instances no deposit at all except for fuel. When you choose to reserve a rental with Premium Cover included, you're often able to reduce your deposit to cover only the cost of a full tank of fuel (usually less than £100), this is fully refunded to your card when the vehicle is returned with a full tank.

Renting a Car with Unlimited Mileage

We offer both limited and unlimited mileage rental.

Limited mileage rentals are often a cheaper option than unlimited. When considering limited mileage rentals, the daily mileage limit is always clearly visibile. If you choose a rental with limited mileage, you will be charged an additional fee if you go above the daily mileage allowance. The mileage allowance for the whole rental is calculated as (the number of hire days multiplied by the daily allowance). You don't have to stay within the daily allowance on every day, as long as the total miles used throughout the rental doesn't exceed the number of days X the daily limit.

When you choose a limited mileage rental, it's receommended to check the fees for excess mileage. You'll find these in our T&Cs section. You can also use the search filters on our website to display rental cars including unlimited mileage which can save you money if you're planning a longer trip

Renting a Car with One Way Fees included

Most of the car providers we include allow you to pick up the car in one location and return the car at a different location. If you've selected a different drop off location for the rental, the prices on our website include all additional charges for this. You'll also find a full breakdown of all additional fees on the payment page.

Hiring a Car with no Excess

The insurance excess is the total amount you would be required to pay if the vehicle is stolen, written off or severely damaged. The excess amount on hire cars can be expensive. It's often between £1,000 to £3,000, depending on the car, the country and the deal. If the car is returned damaged, or it's stolen or written off, you'll have to pay up to the total amount of the excess.

When you pick up the vehicle, the insurance excess is held on your card as something called a 'pre authorised' transaction. Pre Auth means that the amount is not taken from your credit card as a normal transaction, it's held as a pending transaction until you drop off the vehicle. You won't usually pay foreign currency fees on credit cards for pre authorised payments, so provided the car is dropped off in the same condition as when it was collected, the excess amount is fully refunded to your card without anything further to pay.

If you plan to pay by debit card, the insurance excess is taken from your account and refunded when the car is dropped off. If you intend to use a debit card on collection, as the excess amount can be high, we recommend to either buy Premium Cover when you book or to buy top up insurance at the collection desk.

To view car hire options with a £0 or reduced excess review our Premium Cover options.

Car Hire with Child Seats

You can use your own child seats and booster seats for your rental, so long as they meet the legal safety requirements for use in your car hire location.

You'll be offered the opportunity to add them to your car rental when making a booking on our website. Child seats and booster seats are paid in the local currency when picking up the car.

How to hire a car without a credit card

You can pay for your car hire on our website using any credit or debit card, including Visa, Mastercard or American Express. We also compare car hire deals at 1000s of locations that accept a debit card on collection. You can quickly and easily find these by using the filters on the search results page or taking a look at our Premium Cover options on the extras page.

How to Rent a Car with Cross Border Fees Included

If you plan to collect your vehicle and drive it over the border into a different country, you should always review the terms and conditions. Many car hire brands require that you inform them when you collect the car; and usually charge additional fees to top up the insurance. If you fail to do so, it's possible that your rental will not be insured when you cross over into a different country.

You'll find the details of cross border policies by clicking Rental terms and checking the Cross Border Rules section.

If you're struggling to find the cross border terms and conditions for your car hire get in touch with our car rental advisors and they'll be happy to help.

Car rental terminology explained

Excess reimbursement insurance

Purchasing this policy means you'll be reimbursed for any of the excess that's held on your credit card by the car hire company .

Excess insurance also usually covers other potential costs, such as towing, cleaning or admin fees, or misfuelling fees.

Collision damage waiver (CDW)

It insures the car for damage in a similar way the insurance cover you have on your personal car does. CDW usually includes an excess which you can insure with an additional policy (See Excess reimbursement insurance). Stress Free Car Rental also list cars on the site that include CDW with a zero excess

Theft liability insurance (theft protection)

It insures the amount due if the hire car is stolen. It is subject to an excess , which means you would need to pay the first part of any claim (usually between £800 to £1,500, depending on the deal, the car rental company and the location.

When you insure your excess with an excess reimbursement policy, however, you'll be reimbursed for any or all of of the excess you have to pay (See essential cover). Or with Premium Cover your excess amount can be reduced to zero.

Insurance excess

For rentals outside of the US and Canada there's usually an excess held on your card* - this is similar to the excess on domestic car insurance in the UK. However, the excess on hire cars can be very high. It's normally in the region of £1,200 to £3,000. If you decide not to insure the insurance excess you will be liable to pay for any damage to the car up to the value of the excess amount. Take a look at the Premium Cover rental car options if you'd prefer not to have the excess amount blocked on your credit card when you pick up the car.

Extra driver costs

Car rental contracts is between the car hire company and the person that signs the contract and will be the main driver. This means you have to ask for any other drivers to be added, and this usually means an additional cost ( can be up to £13a day ). We often list special offers that include extra drivers are free. Always be cautious of being asked if you'd like to include a driver without being informed of the price.

Fuel policy (full to full vs full to empty)

The hire cars on our site always come with a full to fuel fuel policy.

You'll be required to hold a small deposit for fuel on your credit card when you collect the hire car. Fill the rental up and return it full and there will be nothing further to pay for fuel.

You will see full to empty fuel policies on other sites that seem to be lower cost deals. Always check the terms and conditions for full to empty rentals as usually the refuelling and admin costs included with full to empty fuel policies always make it much more expensive than full to full .

Third party liability insurance

Third party liability insurance insures in case you cause an incident. If you do, it could kill or injure other people (for instance your passengers, people in other vehicles or pedestrians), or damage their property (their vehicle, house or possessions, for example). Since they need to be covered, you'd be responsible any claim, or treating any injuries or financially covering loss of earnings, as well as any legal costs and court costs.

Third party liability is usually subject to an excess, this means you would have to pay the first part of any claim (normally between £900 to £3,000, varying dependent on the value of the car, the deal and the country). When you cover your excess , you will be reimbursed for any or all of the excess amount you have to pay. Or if you take out Premium Cover, the excess can be reduced .

Things to check before driving away your car hire

You'll have received car rental location collection instructions with your confirmation email. Spend some time to read through how to get to the vehicle hire collection location before you set off

Whether you've purchased Premium excess cover on the web site or you have a different insurance policy, always take some time to check the vehicle for pre existing damage. Also spend some time taking photographs with your phone of each section of the car. If there is damage on the vehicle that is not mentioned in your hire contract you must inform the vehicle rental company

Beside the exterior, we also recommend documenting any damage to the inside of the vehicle and informing the vehicle rental company prior to starting your trip

Remember to check alloy wheels and locks for issues as well. These are easy to miss when you are in a rush to start your trip

All of the cars displayed on the web site include a full to full fuel policy. Always check that the fuel tank is full before you set off. If it isn't you should inform the rental company before driving away
