Renting a Car with a Low Security Deposit

When you collect the car, you will usually be required to leave a security deposit on your credit card or debit card. The security deposit vary significantly subject to the size of the car and the insurance excess . Car rental Security deposits can vary between £0 and £2,300.

We compare all of the car hire options with a low security deposit and in some instances no deposit at all except for fuel. When you choose to reserve a rental with Premium Cover included, you're often able to reduce the deposit to cover only the cost of a full tank of fuel (usually less than £100), this is refunded when the vehicle is returned with a full tank.

Car Hire with Unlimited Mileage

Our website offers unlimited and limited mileage rentals.

Limited mileage rentals are often a cheaper option than unlimited. For limited mileage rentals, the daily mileage allowance will always be clearly displayed. If you choose a rental including limited mileage, you'll be liable to pay an additional fee if you exceed the daily allowance. The mileage allowance for the whole rental is calculated as (the number of hire days X the daily mileage allowance). You don't have to remain within the daily allowance on every day, as long as the total miles used during the rental does not exceed the number of days X the daily limit.

If you opt for a limited mileage car hire, it's receommended to check the fees for excess mileage. You'll find these in our T&Cs section. You can also use the filters on our website to find car rental including unlimited mileage which can save you money if you're planning a longer journey

How to Hire a Car with One Way Fees included

Renting a Car with One Way Fees included

Many of the car rental providers we include permit you to pick up your car in one location and return the vehicle at a different location. If you have chosen a different drop off location for the rental, the prices you'll see displayed on the website include all extra charges for this. You will also find a breakdown of the additional fees on the payment page.

Renting a Car without an Excess Held on Your Credit Card

The excess is the amount you'd be required to pay if the vehicle is severely damaged, written off or stolen. However, the excess amount on hire cars can be expensive. It's normally between £1,000 to £2,100. If you return the car damaged, or it's stolen or written off, you will have to pay some or all of the excess.

When you arrive to collect the car, the excess is held on your card as something called a 'pre-auth' transaction. Pre Auth means that the amount isn't charged to your card as a regular payment, it's held as a pending payment until you drop off the car. You don't usually have to pay foreign currency fees on credit cards for pre authorised payments, so provided the rental car is dropped off in the same condition as when it was collected, the amount will be fully refunded to your credit card with nothing additional to pay.

If you intend to pay for your rental by debit card, the insurance excess amount is taken from your account and refunded when the car is returned. If you intend to use a debit card on collection, as the excess is often high, it's recommended to buy Premium Cover on our website or to pay for top up cover at the rental desk.

To view rental options with a £0 or reduced insurance excess take a look at our Premium Cover options.

Car rental terminology explained

Excess reimbursement insurance

Essential Cover
Buying this policy means you'll be refunded for the excess that's held on your credit card by the car rental company .

Excess reimbursement insurance also tends to cover other possible costs, such as towing, cleaning or admin fees, or misfuelling costs.

Damage Liability

It insures the car for damage in the same way the insurance cover you usually have on your own car does. CDW includes an excess which you can choose to insure with an additional policy (See Excess reimbursement insurance). Stress Free Car Rental also include rental cars on the site that include CDW with a zero excess
CDW (Collision damage waiver)

Theft liability cover (theft protection)

Theft liability cover (theft protection)
It covers the amount due if the hire car is stolen. Theft liability is subject to an excess , this means you would have to pay the first part of an insurance claim (normally between £950 to £3,000, depending on the car, the country and the deal.

If you choose to insure your excess with an excess reimbursement policy, however, you will be reimbursed for any of of the excess amount you pay (See essential cover). With Premium Cover the excess can be reduced to zero.

Rental car excess

For rentals outside of the US and Canada there's almost always an insurance excess held on your card* - just like on domestic car insurance in the UK. However, the excess on rental cars can be very high. It's often in the region of £1,000 to £3,000. If you fail to insure the excess amount you will be liable to pay for damage up to the value of the excess . Take a look at the Premium Cover hire car options if you'd like to avoid having the excess amount held on your credit card when you pick up the car.
Car Rental excess

Extra driver charges

Additional driver fees
Car hire agreements is between the hire car company and the person who signs the agreement and will be the main driver. This requires that you have to ask for other drivers to be added, this usually means an additional cost ( can be up to £10a day or even more). However, there are occasional special offers where extra drivers are free. Always be cautious of being asked if you'd like to include a driver without being told the price.

Fuel policy (full to full vs full to empty)

The hire cars on our site include a fair full to fuel fuel policy.

You'll be required to hold a small deposit for fuel on a credit card when you collect the car. Ensure that you fill the rental up and return it full and there's no additional fees for fuel.

You will see full to empty policies on other sites that seem to be better deals. Always check the small print for full to empty rentals as the admin and refuelling charges associated with full to empty fuel policies always make it much more expensive than full to full fuel policies.
Fuel policy (full to full vs full to empty)

Third party liability cover

Third party liability cover
Third party liability insurance provides protection in case you cause an accident. If you do, it might injure or kill other people (such as your passengers, people in other vehicles or pedestrians), or damage property (their vehicle, house or possessions, for example). As legally they need to be covered, you'd be responsible the cost of any damage, or treating injuries or financially covering loss of earnings, as well as the third party's legal fees and any court costs.

Third party liability is usually subject to an excess, which means you would have to pay the first part of any claim (usually between £750 to £1,700, varying dependent on the value of the car, the deal and the country). If you choose to cover your excess amount, you will be reimbursed for all of the excess you have to pay. Or if you take out Premium Cover, the excess amount can be reduced .
