The top ten countries leading the electric vehicle race and setting the standard for lower carbon emissions has been revealed, and the United States of America sits in tenth position - far behind China, Japan and several European nations.
In the United States more than 1.7m electric vehicles have been sold, one for every 189 Americans. These cars share a network of 26,000 public charging points, that’s one for every 67 cars, well behind many other nations.
Even though sitting in tenth, they are looking forward and look to improve on this position. President Joe Biden has vowed to replace the U.S. government’s fleet of roughly 650,000 vehicles with electric models as the new administration shifts its focus toward clean-energy.
America is going big on electric vehicles in 2021, and President Biden is spearheading the revolution. There is a proposal to convert all 500,000 U.S. school buses to electric by 2030. There is also a call for a national network of 500,000 electric vehicle chargers.
There will be $5 billion of the $300 billion Build Back Better plan aimed at battery and energy storage to improve the range and reduce the cost of electric vehicles and there will be a 10% tax credit for creating American jobs in the automotive industry.
All this investment and incentivising bode well for the future and we expect to see America rise from their current tenth position in the global leaderboard.
We looked at the leading countries in electric vehicle sales and market share, and then crossed referenced against population figures, and the number of electric vehicle charging points to calculate a leaderboard.
This leaderboard tells us who is leading the race to become the first-ever electric vehicle only and setting the standard for lower carbon emissions.
