Car Hire with No Excess

Many of the hire cars we include on our website include the option to reduce the insurance excess to zero. As the excess on some cars can be very expensive, we’ve made it really easy for you to find a rental car with an affordable excess amount.

What is a Car Hire Excess?

A car hire excess is the maximum amount you would be liable to pay if the car is damaged or stolen. This amount is usually held on your credit card when you collect the car. If you’re using a debit card the amount is taken from your account. When you return the car without any damage the excess is refunded.

What If I Return the Car Damaged?

You should always ensure the excess amount either by purchasing Essential Cove or Premium Cover on our website or through an alternative 3rd party provider. If you fail to insure the excess the amount you could be liable to pay the full excess amount and have no way to claim it back.

If you purchase Essential Cover, the amount for any damages will be held by the car rental company and the balance of the excess will be refunded. You can then claim back the amount retained by the car rental company through your Essential Cover Policy. Always be sure to retain any paperwork and repair estimates provided by the car rental company. Also take photographs of any damage to the car. For more information regarding managing a claim please see the Essential Cover policy documentation that is attached to your booking confirmation. Premium Cover reduces the excess amount (often to zero) which significantly reduces the security deposit amount held on your card when you collect the car. For zero excess car hire options, you have nothing to pay if the car is stolen or damaged.

How Can I Find Car Hire with No Excess?

You can view the different excess options on the extras page once you’ve selected your car from the search results. Wherever Premium Cover is available you’ll be offered the option to the insurance excess (sometimes to zero).

Why we're different

There's a wide variety of reasons why we're different from our rivals but to start, it's important to recognise that Stress Free Car Rental exists because of our personal frustration with the process of renting a car.

Paying for Car hire with no credit card and other payment card options.

You can pay with Visa, American Express or a Mastercard credit card or a debit card issued by your bank or credit card company when booking your rental on our website.

It can be practical to understand the different payment and currency options for your car hire in , as often payments for extras (such as booster seats and Sat Nav) might need to be settled in the local currency (by credit card) at the collection counter.

When you include Basic or Essential Cover for your rental, it often means that you will be required to present a credit card in the name of the lead driver on collection of the car. You will usually be given the option to pay for a top up policy by the rental partner on collection, this then allows you to use a debit card in the name of the lead driver.

Frequently, car rentals that include our Premium Cover option will allow you to use a debit card on collection without any extra charges. You can review if a debit card is allowed, along with the different car hire security deposit and insurance options on the second step of the website booking process.

Car rental jargon explained

Third party liability cover

Third party liability cover
Third party liability insurance insures in case you cause an incident. If you do, it could kill or injure other people (for instance your passengers, pedestrians or people in other vehicles), or damage their property (their vehicle, house or possessions, for example). Since they need to be covered, you'd be responsible any claim, or treating injuries or covering their loss of earnings, as well as the third party's legal costs and court fees.

Third party liability is subject to an excess, which means you would need to pay the first part of any claim (normally between £800 to £2,000, varying dependent on the car, the deal and the country). When you cover the excess , you will be reimbursed for any or all of the excess you have to pay. If you decide to take out Premium Cover, the excess is often reduced to zero.

Car hire excess

For rentals outside of the US and Canada there is almost always an excess to pay* - just like on your own car in the UK. The excess on hire cars is very high. It's often in the region of £1,000 to £2,500. If you fail to cover the excess you could be liable to pay for damage to the car up to the excess amount. Check out our Premium Cover car hire options if you'd prefer not to have the excess amount held on your credit card when you collect the car.
Car hire excess

Essential Cover

Essential Cover
Purchasing this policy means you'll be reimbursed for any of the excess that's held on your credit card by the hire car company when you drop off the car.

Excess reimbursement insurance also tends to cover other possible costs, like cleaning, towing, admin fees and misfuelling fees.

Theft liability insurance (theft protection)

Theft liability insures the amount due if the rental car is stolen. Theft liability is subject to an excess , this means you'll need to pay the first part of an insurance claim (usually between £1,000 to £3,000, depending on the car, the country and the deal.

When you insure your excess , however, you will be reimbursed for the of the excess you have to pay (See essential cover). Or with Premium Cover the excess amount can be reduced.
Theft liability insurance (theft protection)

Damage Liability

Damage Liability
It provides insurance protection for damage in a similar way the insurance you have on your personal car does. It includes an excess amount which you can choose to cover with an additional policy (See Excess reimbursement insurance). Stress Free Car Rental also list rental cars that include CDW with a zero excess

Additional driver charges

A car hire agreement is between the car hire company and the one person that signs the agreement and will be the named driver. This means you will need to ask for any other drivers to be added, this usually means an additional cost ( can be up to £13a day or even more). However, there are occasional promotions that include extra drivers are free. Always be cautious of being asked if you'd like to include a driver without being told the price.
Additional driver costs

Fuel policy (full to full vs full to empty)

Fuel policy (full to full vs full to empty)
The rentals on the site include a full to fuel fuel policy.

You'll be required to pay a small deposit for fuel on a credit card when you collect the rental. Fill the car up and return it full and there's no additional fees for fuel.

You might find full to empty policies on other websites that seem to be cheaper deals. Be sure to check the small print for full to empty rentals as usually the admin and refuelling charges associated with full to empty fuel policies make it much more expensive than full to full fuel policies.
